The Flapjack Octopus Do Your Kids Know This? by Tanya Turner Pdf

If most species of octopus are quite scary, consider this one an exception. The Flapjack Octopus is far from being scary - it's harmless and it's cute. The Flapjack Octopus is a species of octopus that's also called Flapjack Devilfish. However, it only looks similar to a devilfish, but it is not related to it. Because of its flat appearance, it's referred to as Flapjack or Pancake Devilfish. Being flat also makes it the most compressed (or flat) species of cephalopod (octopuses and squids are members of this group or class). The body of a Flapjack Octopus is gelatin-like, so it's soft and gooey. The shades of their body can be anywhere from transparent to dark red - so there's a pinkish shade there somewhere, too. As with all octopuses, the Flapjack Octopus also has eight legs (octo actually means eight). Their legs are joined together by a thin flesh, so their legs are webbed. Having webbed legs also makes the octopus seem like an open umbrella when it's moving. Excited to learn more about the Flapjack Octopus? Equipping Space Cadets by Emily Midkiff Pdf

Equipping Space Cadets: Primary Science Fiction for Young Children argues for the benefits and potential of “primary science fiction,” or science fiction for children under twelve years old. Science fiction for children is often disregarded due to common misconceptions of childhood. When children are culturally portrayed as natural and simple, they seem like a poor audience for the complex scientific questions brought up by the best science fiction. The books and the children who read them tell another story. Using three empirical studies and over 350 children’s books including If I Had a Robot Dog, Bugs in Space, and Commander Toad in Space, Equipping Space Cadets presents interdisciplinary evidence that science fiction and children are compatible after all. Primary science fiction literature includes many high-quality books that cleverly utilize the features of children’s literature formats in order to fit large science fiction questions into small packages. In the best of these books, authors make science fiction questions accessible and relevant to children of various reading levels and from diverse backgrounds and identities. Equipping Space Cadets does not stop with literary analysis, but also presents the voices of real children and practitioners. The book features three studies: a survey of teachers and librarians, quantitative analysis of lending records from school libraries across the United States, and coded read-aloud sessions with elementary school students. The results reveal how children are interested in and capable of reading science fiction, but it is the adults, including the most well-intentioned librarians and teachers, who hinder children's engagement with the genre due to their own preconceptions about the genre and children.

On the Other Side of the Garden by Jairo Buitrago,Elisa Amado Pdf

From one of the great creative teams in picture books, On the Other Side of the Garden is about a city girl learning to accept the change brought about by her parents’ separation when she is taken to her grandmother’s house in the country and befriended by an owl, a frog and a mouse. When her father leaves her at her grandmother’s house, the young girl at the center of this story feels abandoned and lonely. Her mother has moved to another country, and the girl wasn’t paying attention when her father explained what was happening. And she hardly remembers her grandmother. After going up to her room she decides to venture out into the nighttime garden where she meets an owl, a frog and a mouse. They take her on a tour of her extraordinary new world. When she gets back in the morning, her grandmother explains that her father won’t be back for a long time. The girl tells her that she wants to be able to spend time in the garden with the plants and animals of this new world, and her grandmother doesn’t seem to be either surprised or alarmed by her nighttime adventures. And she is very happy that the girl and she will get to know each other. Buitrago’s stories are noted for conveying large truths through understatement and suggestion. This story, beautifully illustrated by Yockteng, shows how a child can use her own bravery and curiosity to confront frightening and potentially destructive realities such as a parents’ separation and being left with an almost unknown relative through what we must assume is a situation where her father had no choice. There is an endnote about the plants and animals that might be found in such a garden.
