History of Alabama by L. D. Miller Pdf

Excerpt from History of Alabama: Adapted to the Use of Schools and for General Reading During twenty-five years connection with the schools of Calhoun county, as teacher, township trustee and county superintendent of education, the author was often impressed with the need of a history of Alabama adapted to the use of schools, and suitable for the reading people of the State. After two years continuous and earnest work in writing just such a book as he conceived to be desirable, he now presents this volume as the result of his labors. The colonial history and territorial history of no section of the Union have been more faithfully recorded than the happenings on Alabama soil by A. J. Pickett. It is unfortunate that this writer was cut off in the prime of his manhood, and did not live to bring his chronicles to a later date - even to 1861. For the lack of such a work many interesting events from 1820 to 1861 have doubtless passed into oblivion, and the present-day writer is utterly unable to fill out that period as it should be. Brewer and Garrett both proved themselves excellent biographers of the eminent men of Alabama, and the former deserves great credit for the Confederate War History which he gives in his County Notes, pages 107 to 585, and in "Part 2" of his "War Record" of Alabama, pages 589 to 705. His work appears the more laborious and meritorious when we call to mind that it was published before the Official Records, mentioned below. The "Official Records of the Rebellion," published by the United States Government, will ever prove a "treasure house" of the history of the Confederate war period. Pickett The Indians found in Alabama by the earliest European explorers were not unlike those of later times. They were of a reddish or cinnamon brown complexion. The men were for the most part athletic and well proportioned, and many of the women were handsome. Both sexes wore mantles made of the inner bark of trees and of a species of flax, and they adorned themselves with ornaments of Shells and. Pearls, sometimes ar ranged in the form of bracelets. Many wore moccasins which were made of dressed deerskin. They usually painted their faces and bodies; some punctured themselves with needles of bone, and then rubbed in a sort of indelible ink. They dressed their heads with feathers of eagles and other birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
