Here's your opportunity to look into the future of energy technologies, with emphasis on alternative, or non-conventional technologies, their potential impacts, and the technical, economic and policy issues that will affect their successful integration into global energy markets. Over the past several years, industry and government have turned to a strategic planning technique called "roadmapping" to help assess future energy management practices and technologies. This book considers energy management and technology development over the next several decades by exploring data from these energy technology roadmaps. International in scope, the book examines both the technical and non-technical aspects of emerging technologies. Detailed technology assessments for specific alternative energy resources are presented. An overview of the problems associated with conventional energy consumption is included, as well as an insightful discussion of technology implementation issues from the author's own well-informed and cautiously optimistic perspective

Global Warming and Alternate Energy by Douglas Elvers Pdf

The Author has experience in Ice Age Climatology and Geology in the area from the Black Hills, South Dakota to eastern Nebraska with Midland College, the University of Nebraska Department of Geology and Morrill Hall State Museum of Paleontology. He mapped Ice Age deposited soils and landforms including fossil deposits. He performed Arctic Surveys with the US Navy Oceanographic Office ships USNS Dutton and Michelson and the Coast and Geodetic Survey ships Surveyor and Oceanographer. These were the first modern geophysical surveys in the North Sea and offshore Alaska, Washington to California and Hawaii. His particular expertise in modern geophysical surveying and mapping has led to well grounded understanding of coastal and sea floor features of the arctic and Antarctic, using new ice and sediment mapping techniques tied to modern navigation and positioning. His hobby is understanding man's adaptability to climate, early migrations, exploration and appreciation of the Neolithic mind gaining man's survival abilities. Adequate education of the public, including historic climate change information, for planet management seems necessary. The fact that 700 million years ago, earth was locked in ice cover for millions of years should be realized. Then vast volcanic eruptions created a greenhouse gas atmosphere and earth's climate alternated between too hot and too cold for human development. These conditions should be understood and avoided at all costs. For future survival, humans must understand the importance of climate and earth management, and live and act accordingly.

Alternative Energy Sources by Efstathios E. Stathis Michaelides Pdf

Alternative Energy Sources is designed to give the reader, a clear view of the role each form of alternative energy may play in supplying the energy needs of the human society in the near future (20-50 years). The two first chapters on "energy demand and supply" and "environmental effects," set the tone as to why alternative energy is essential for the future. The third chapter gives the laws of energy conversion processes, as well as the limitations of converting one energy form to another. The section on exergy gives a quantitative background on the capability/potential of each energy source to produce power. The fourth, fifth and sixth chapters are expositions of fission and fusion nuclear energy, the power plants that may produce power from these sources and the issues that will frame the public debate on nuclear energy. The following five chapters include descriptions of the most common renewable energy sources (wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric) some of the less common sources (e.g. tidal and wave energy). The emphasis of these chapters will be on the global potential of each source, the engineering/technical systems that are used in harnessing the potential of each source, the technological developments that will contribute to wider utilization of the sources and environmental effects associated with their wider use. The last three chapters are: "energy storage," which will become an important issue if renewable energy sources are used widely. The fourteen chapters in the book have been chosen so that one may fit a semester University course around this book. At the end of every chapter, there are 10-20 problems and 1-3 suggestions of semester projects that may be assigned to students for further research.

Alternative Energy Resources by Pankaj Pathak,Rajiv Ranjan Srivastava Pdf

This book reviews alternative and renewable energy resources in order to pave the way for a more sustainable production in the future. A multi-disciplinary team of authors provides a comprehensive overview of current technologies and future trends, including solar technologies, wind energy, hydropower, microbial electrochemical systems and various biomass sources for biofuel production. In addition, the book focuses on solutions for developing countries. Conventional energy sources are finite, and estimates suggest that they will be exhausted within a few decades. Finding a solution to this problem is a global challenge, and developing countries in particular are still highly dependent on fossil fuels due to their rapidly growing populations accompanied by a huge growth in primary energy consumption. Moreover, the most common conventional energy sources (coal and petroleum) are non-sustainable since their combustion exponentially increases greenhouse gas emissions. As such, there is a pressing need for clean energy based on alternative or renewable resources, not only to ensure energy supplies at an affordable price but also to protect the environment.

Encyclopedia of Renewable Energy by James G. Speight Pdf

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RENEWABLE ENERGY Written by a highly respected engineer and prolific author in the energy sector, this is the single most comprehensive, thorough, and up-to-date reference work on renewable energy. The world’s energy industry is and has always been volatile, sometimes controversial, with wild swings upward and downward. This has, historically, been mostly because most of our energy has come from fossil fuels, which is a finite source of energy. Every so often, a technology comes along, like hydrofracturing, that is a game-changer. But is it, really? Aren’t we just delaying the inevitable with these temporary price fixes The only REAL game-changer is renewable energy. For decades, renewable energy sources have been sought, developed, and studied. Sometimes wind is at the forefront, sometimes solar, and, for the last decade or so, there has been a surge in interest for biofeedstocks and biofuels. There are also the “old standbys” of nuclear and geothermal energy, which have both been around for a very long time. This groundbreaking new volume presents these topics and trends in an encyclopedic format, as a go-to reference for the engineer, scientist, student, or even layperson who works in the industry or is simply interested in the topic. Compiled by one of the world’s best-known and respected energy engineers, this is the most comprehensive and up-to-date encyclopedia of renewable energy ever written, a must-have for any library. Encyclopedia of Renewable Energy: Is written in an encyclopedic style, covering every aspect of renewable energy, including wind, solar, and many other topics Offers a comprehensive coverage of the industry, from the chemical processes of biofeedstocks and biofuels to the machinery and equipment used in the production of fuel and power generation Is filled with workable examples and designs that are helpful for practical applications Covers the state of the art, an invaluable resource for any engineer Audience Engineers across a variety of industries, including wind, solar, process engineering, waste utilization for fuels, and many others, such as process engineers, chemical engineers, electrical engineers, petroleum engineers, civil engineers, and the technicians and other scientists who work in this field
