Always Song in the Water by Gregory O’Brien Pdf

Beginning in Northland and heading into the blue beyond, Always Song in the Water is a book of encounters and epiphanies, a dinghy ride through New Zealand’s oceanic imagination.Every spring on Gregory O’Brien’s front lawn, on a ridgetop in Hataitai, an upside-down dinghy blooms with flowering clematis. In this book, O’Brien takes his metaphorical dinghy to the edges of New Zealand – starting with a road trip through Northland and then voyaging out into the Pacific, to lead us into some under-explored territories of the South Pacific imagination. With creative spirits such as Janet Frame, Ralph Hotere, Robin White, John Pule and Epeli Hau‘ofa as touchstones, O’Brien suggests how we New Zealanders might be re-imagining ourselves as an oceanic people on a small island in a big piece of water.Always Song in the Water is a book of encounters, sightings and unexpected epiphanies. It is a high-spirited, personal and inventive account of being alive at the outer extremities of Aotearoa New Zealand. ‘This is my field notebook, my voyaging logbook,’ Gregory O’Brien writes, ‘this is my Schubert played on a barrel organ, my whale survey, my songbook.’Among the many artists whose work is featured are John Pule, Robin White, Phil Dadson, Fiona Hall, Euan Macleod, Laurence Aberhart and the Sydney-based painter Noel McKenna, who produced numerous works specifically for this book.

Of Song and Water by Joseph Coulson Pdf

Moving from the Great Lakes to the jazz bars of Detroit and Chicago, Of Song and Water is a tale of singlehanded sailors and jazz musicians, of working-class dreams blighted by family duty, personal betrayals, and the untold violence between fathers and sons. The novel follows the life of Coleman Moore, a jazz guitarist of early fame who finds himself adrift and in the company of ghosts: his mentor, a black jazz legend trying to live peacefully on the edge of a white town; his grandfather, a Prohibition rumrunner turned ruthless entrepreneur; and his first love, a clear-headed woman who refuses to live in the dark tunnels of the past. As he abandons music and turns his mind to a damaged sailboat, Coleman begins a hazardous course, risking the love of his daughter and the trust of Brian James, his longtime collaborator and friend. Driven by mid-life doubts, Coleman revisits his early ambitions and desires, returning through a maze of time and memory to the central crisis of his life, a moment of tremendous cruelty that calls into question much of what he hopes for and believes. In language that evokes the riffs and rhythms of jazz and the sound and movement of the Great Lakes, Joseph Coulson’s second novel is a profound Orphic journey, a story of hidden truths, unfulfilled dreams, and possible redemption.

Sounds and the City by Brett Lashua,Stephen Wagg,Karl Spracklen,M. Selim Yavuz Pdf

This book draws from a rich history of scholarship about the relations between music and cities, and the global flows between music and urban experience. The contributions in this collection comment on the global city as a nexus of moving people, changing places, and shifting social relations, asking what popular music can tell us about cities, and vice versa. Since the publication of the first Sounds and the City volume, various movements, changes and shifts have amplified debates about globalization. From the waves of people migrating to Europe from the Syrian civil war and other conflict zones, to the 2016 “Brexit” vote to leave the European Union and American presidential election of Donald Trump. These, and other events, appear to have exposed an anti-globalist retreat toward isolationism and a backlash against multiculturalism that has been termed “post-globalization.” Amidst this, what of popular music? Does music offer renewed spaces and avenues for public protest, for collective action and resistance? What can the diverse histories, hybridities, and legacies of popular music tell us about the ever-changing relations of people and cities?

Noise, Water, Meat by Douglas Kahn Pdf

An examination of the role of sound in twentieth-century arts. This interdisciplinary history and theory of sound in the arts reads the twentieth century by listening to it—to the emphatic and exceptional sounds of modernism and those on the cusp of postmodernism, recorded sound, noise, silence, the fluid sounds of immersion and dripping, and the meat voices of viruses, screams, and bestial cries. Focusing on Europe in the first half of the century and the United States in the postwar years, Douglas Kahn explores aural activities in literature, music, visual arts, theater, and film. Placing aurality at the center of the history of the arts, he revisits key artistic questions, listening to the sounds that drown out the politics and poetics that generated them. Artists discussed include Antonin Artaud, George Brecht, William Burroughs, John Cage, Sergei Eisenstein, Fluxus, Allan Kaprow, Michael McClure, Yoko Ono, Jackson Pollock, Luigi Russolo, and Dziga Vertov.

My Life is a Rock and Roll Song ... ready to be sung! by Ray Mack Pdf

Born to a Slovenian Mom and an Irish Dad, I grew up in a small Ohio town in the 40's and 50's with many memories of my family struggling during and after World War II. Studies came easy for me, graduating with honors in College Preparatory Classes in 1959. I spent the last years in high school having overcome a "Meatball" weight problem and hanging out with buddies that were "cool." Although I was accepted and had a college scholarship waiting for me, there was this stronger urge to accompany my buddies and join the Marines — promising my parents college would come later. While serving 4 years in the Marine Corps (Univac Computers), I followed one of my "cool" buddies to a local Albany, GA radio station in search of a part-time job and fell in love with the thought of being a DJ with hundreds of girls admiring me and my now Mr. Bronze America muscular body! I did make it with an on-air gig but only got there because of my Sales/Marketing skills. With a few delays, my parents were elated when I graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications and a Master's Degree in Broadcast Management. The road to success has taken me on a lot of twists and turns, some right turns — while making my share of boo-boos along the way. There has been more than 50 years invested in writing this book ... some parts based on life — others based on my vivid imagination! During and following a career in radio and helping to build-up and sell radio stations, there was success as a motivational speaker across the country while promoting other famous speakers, including Zig Ziglar, Og Mandino and Norman Vincent Peale. Several money- making projects were always active while living life to the fullest — including looking for the next lady to share it with and the next opportunity to do something exciting! Enjoy!!
