Alas, Vol. 1 of 3 by Rhoda Broughton Pdf

Excerpt from Alas, Vol. 1 of 3: Amelia "If you will allow me, I shall have the pleasure of reading aloud to you some passages from 'Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings, ' by Charles Dickens. I do not know much about the book myself, as I have never read it. I dare say that you know more about it than I do; but I am given to understand" (with a glance at the page before him) "that Mrs. Lirriper was a lodging-house-keeper, that she kept lodgings in London. She was a very good sort of woman, I believe" (another hasty glance), but she sometimes had trouble with her servants. The History of Amelia (Classic Reprint) by Henry Fielding Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Amelia Sir, The following book is sincerely designed to promote the cause of virtue, and to expose some of the most glaring evils, as well public as private, which at present infest the country; though there is scarce, as I remember, a single stroke of satire aimed at any one person throughout the whole. The best man is the properest patron of such an attempt; this, I believe, will be readily granted: nor will the public voice, I think, be more divided, to whom they shall give that appellation. Should a letter, indeed, be thus inscribed, Detur Optimo, there are few persons who would think it wanted any other direction. I will not trouble you with a preface concerning the work, nor endeavour to obviate any criticisms which can be made on it. The good-natured reader, if his heart should be here affected, will be inclined to pardon many faults for the pleasure he will receive from a tender sensation; and for readers of a different stamp, the more faults they can discover, the more, I am convinced, they will be pleased. Nor will I assume the fulsome style of common dedicators: I have not their usual design in this epistle, nor will I borrow their language. Long, very long may it be, before a most dreadful circumstance shall make it possible for any pen to draw a just and true character of yourself, without incurring a suspicion of flattery in the bosoms of the malignant. The Works of Henry Fielding Amelia, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Henry Fielding Pdf

Excerpt from The Works of Henry Fielding Amelia, Vol. 2 Booth's affairs were put on a better aspect than they had ever worn before, and he was willing to make use of the opportunity of one day in seven to taste the fresh air. At nine in the morning he went to pay a visit to his old friend Colonel James, resolving, if possible, to have a full explanation of that behaviour which appeared to him so mysterious: but the colonel was as inaccessible as the best defended fortress; and it was as impossible for Booth to pass beyond his entry as the Spaniards found it to take Gibraltar. He received the usual answers; first, that the colonel was not stirring, and an hour after that he was gone out. All that he got by asking further questions was only to receive still ruder answers, by which, if he had been very sagacious, he might have been satisfied how little worth his while it was to desire to go in; for the porter at a great mans door is a kind of thermometer, by which you may discover the warmth or coldness of his master's friendship. The Romance of Princess Amelia, Daughter of George III (1783-1810) Including Extracts from Private and Unpublished Papers (Classic Reprint) by William Shakespear Childe-Pemberton Pdf

Excerpt from The Romance of Princess Amelia, Daughter of George III (1783-1810) Including Extracts From Private and Unpublished Papers While a study, drawn from original sources, representing the character, habits and surroundings of an English Princess who died a hundred years ago, may fairly be considered as a contribution to domestic history, it seems peculiarly appropriate on the centenary of the death of the amiable Princess Amelia to tell the true story of her life, and of her attachment to General Charles FitzRoy, if only to clear away misconceptions which have gathered around her memory, and to rebut certain slanders which recently have been revived. The love-affair of this Princess was concealed by her family, as far as possible, from the world at the time of her death. She herself appears to have gloried in her innocent attachment, and certainly by the terms of her will desired to make her betrothal a matter of public knowledge. The suppression of her testamentary wishes by her family at the time of her death was, to say the least, ill-judged. Gossip and scandal were not the less busy with her name. Memorials of the Life of Amelia Opie by Cecilia Lucy Brightwell Pdf

Excerpt from Memorials of the Life of Amelia Opie: Selected and Arranged From Her Letters, Diaries, and Other Manuscripts IN the preparation of these Memoirs for publication, the principal part of the labour has been undertaken by my daughter; the pressure of other engagements having only permitted me to undertake the general direction and super vision of the whole. As the Executor of Mrs. Opie, her papers and letters came into my hands; and it devolved on me to decide in what way to dispose of them. There had been, (i believe, ) a general impression among her friends, that she would herself prepare an account of her Life; but although she seems to have made some efforts at commencing the task, and the subject was often affectionately recommended, and even urged upon her, she has left it a matter of regret to her friends, (and especially so to the compilers of these memoirs, ) that no Autobiography was found among her papers. Nor did Mrs. Opie ever distinctly give any directions as to the publication of her mss. Or any Memoir of her Life; but we have, we think, strong presumptive evidence, that she anticipated, if not desired, that it should be done. Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) by Henry Carr Pearson Pdf

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Between Two Loves (Classic Reprint) by Amelia E. Barr Pdf

Excerpt from Between Two Loves The dusty daylight was loaded with a thou sand subtle odors Of oil and wool and dyes, and the sunshine fell upon hundreds of webs, many colored and bright-tinted, soft and glossy as silk, beautiful With curious devices and borders and reliefs. It fell also upon hundreds Of hands, some of them ordinary enough, Slipshod both as to mind and body; others bright, handsome, alert, and full of intelligence. The best work: ers, almost Without exception, were women, rosy-checked Yorkshire girls, or the more intel lectual Lancashire hand, with her wonderful gray eyes, long-fringed, bewitching, and full of feeling. The men had less individuality, and the long, blue checked pinafore and cloth cap, which all alike Wore, still further increased their uniformity. Each worker attended to two looms, and most Of them were singing as they watched the shut tles glide swiftly between the webs, and the wefts slowly welding themselves to the warps, and growing into soft merinos and lustrous alpacas. Burley, standing within the door Of the long weaving-room, saw everything with a comprehensive eye. He was fond of singing, and he listened with pleasure to the clear, thros tle-like warbling of a girl in some solo part, and the stirring chorus lifted by twenty voices around her. It was a favorite hymn Of his, and it touched him somewhat, he had no Objection to hear its triumphant strains mingling with the clicking of the machinery and the clack Of the wayward shuttles; he knew well that men and women who sing at their labor put a good heart into it.
