An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary (Classic Reprint) by William Allen Pdf

Excerpt from An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary The following work presents itself to the public with no claims to attention, but such as are founded upon the interest, which may be felt in the lives of Americans. Finding himself a few years ago in a literary retirement, with no important duties, which pressed immediately upon him, the author conceived the plan of this dictionary. He was desirous of bringing to the citizens of the United States more information, than was generally possessed, respecting the illustrious men of former times, the benefactors and ornaments of this country, who have passed away. He persuaded himself, that if he could collect the fragments of biography, which were buried in the mass of American history, or scattered amidst a multitude of tracts of various kinds, and could fashion these materials into a regular form, so as to place before the eye our great and good men, if not in their full dimensions, yet in their true shape, he should render an acceptable service to his countrymen. This work with no little labor he has now completed; and the inexperienced artist, in his first essay, can hope only, that his design will be commended. He wishes chiefly, that as the images of departed excellence are surveyed, the spirit, which animated them, may be caught by the beholder. As an apology however for the deficiences and errors of various kinds, which may be found in the work, a full exposition of his plan, and some representation of the difficulty of executing it seem to be necessary. A New American Biographical Dictionary; Or Remembrancer of the Departed Heroes, Sages and Statesmen of America (Classic Reprint) by Thomas J. Rogers Pdf

Excerpt from A New American Biographical Dictionary; Or Remembrancer of the Departed Heroes, Sages and Statesmen of America But why should'we enumerate our injuries in detail? By one statute it is declared, that parliament can of right make laws to bind us in all cases whatsoever. What is to defend us against so enormous, so unlimited a power? Not a single man of those who assume it, is chosen by us'; or is subject to our control or influence; but, on the contrary, they are all of them exempt from the operation of such laws; and an American revenue, if not diverted from the ostensible purposes for which it is raised, would actually lighten their ov'vn burdens in proportion as they increase ours. We saw the misery to which such despotism would reduce us. We for ten years incessantly and inefl'ectually besieged the throne as supplicants; we reasoned, we remonstrated with par liament in the most mild and decent language. The Dictionary of Biographical Reference by Lawrence Barnett Phillips Pdf

Excerpt from The Dictionary of Biographical Reference: Containing One Hundred Thousand Names, Together With a Classed Index of the Biographical Literature of Europe and America Of works on Biography the number is legion nevertheless, it appeared to the compiler of the present volume that room still existed for a Compendium, in which, by a judicious system of compression, 3. Students' Dictionary might be formed, which would register what, after all, is of the first importance to them, - viz., the more prominent dates and facts, - and at the same time assist them to the knowledge of works of a more recondite nature, in which fuller information might be found, if needed. Such a Compendium is now before the reader. An approximation to the system adopted has been attempted by others, but in no case has it been carried out to the extent of the present work neither has the system of reference - the principal feature of this design ever been essayed, if thought of. The want which the present work is intended to supply is one which must have been experienced by every earnest reader or writer. The value of the data upon which the 'generalisations of both must rest mainly depends upon the readiness with which they can be verified, and no facts are more frequently in requisition for this purpose than those connected with the personal history of individuals; and when these are not of such note as to have taken their place in general history, it will be evident to all that much valuable time is frequently wasted in the attempt to identify them. American Biographical Panorama (Classic Reprint) by William Hunt Pdf

Excerpt from American Biographical Panorama A little babe lay in the cradle, and Hope came and kissed it. The babe grew to a child, and another friend came and kissed it. Her name was Memory. She said, Look behind thee, and tell me what thou seest. The child answered, I see a little book. Then Memory said, I will teach thee to get honey from thy book, that will be sweet to thee when thou art old. The youth became a man, and at length age found him. The old man laid down to die, and when his soul went from his body, Memory walked with it through the open gate of Heaven. She died in 1903 and in 1905 he married Elsie Verona Maples of Detroit, who survived him without issue. He died from an undiagnosed cause in his seventy-second year in his Brook line, Mass, home. His body was cremated and the ashes were placed in Mount Auburn ceme tery, Cambridge. American Biographical Notes by Franklin B. Hough Pdf

Excerpt from American Biographical Notes: Being Short Notices of Deceased Persons, Chiefly Those Not Included in Allen's or in Drake's Biographical Dictionaries This volume owes its origin to an accidental circumstance. Nearly twenty years ago, the undersigned had occasion to ascertain the date of death of a person who many years before had been a distinguished citizen of Albany, holding an important public office, and filling a prominent place in social circles in the day id which he lived. All existing biographical collections failed to give the information desired, and an extended course of personal inquiry among aged citizens of Albany elicited nothing but this, that while all remembered the fact that he had lived, none could give the slightest information as to when or where he died. At length a man was found who thought, that by looking in the files of a newspaper, published some forty years before, the date desired might be found, and accordingly, after a lengthy search, it was discovered, but several years earlier than the year which the informant had indicated. Now this incident must have bad its parallel in the experience of every one who has had occasion to find obituary dates. It impressed upon the writer the importance of saving, in form for convenient reference, these dates scattered all along the course of passing time, and daily coming under our notice to be read, laid aside and forgotten. Accordingly at leisure moments, those passing facts, with a brief note, and often a reference, were written down upon slips of paper of uniform size, and kept in alphabetical order until the practice became a habit; and the collection extended to several thousand in number, without the slightest thought of its ever being used by any one but the writer. These abstracts were carried through several series of magazines and scientific periodicals, and through many volumes that came within our range of reading, without professing to be exhaustive in any case as to number or extent; they being in fact nothing but brief notes, with such further references as might ha pen to be convenient. In this form it lay until, upon its being incidentally mentioned to the publisher, its printing was undertaken, in the hope that it night from a convenient index to dates most widely scattered, and often most difficult to find.
