An Introduction to Modern Genetics (Classic Reprint) by C. H. Waddington Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to Modern Genetics Few biologists will doubt that heredity, the subject matter of genetics, is one of the important problems of biology. Indeed, when Mendel's results were rediscovered in 1900 and the new science of genetics got under way, it appeared to some authors that a new era was dawning in biological thought. But in the years that followed it often seemed that the high hopes which had been entertained were becoming dissi pated in a morass of numerical elaborations on the hackneyed theme of Mendelian segregation. Genetics was in danger of being considered, by other biologists, as a world of its own, devoted to following the comings and goings of genes whose relevance to other biological phenomena, though incontrovertible in general theory, could rarely be stated in detail and in particular. An Introduction to Modern Genetics by C. H. WADDINGTON Pdf

First published in 1939 (second impression in 1950), this book provides an account of the changes in, and main principles of, genetics at that time. These are illustrated by references to the most authoritative and then recent investigations. Special attention is paid to the way in which genetics overlaps with other fields of inquiry, since it is often in these border-line subjects that the most important advances are to be expected. The book is particularly arranged to suit the convenience of students whose previous knowledge of genetics is small, and contains annotated bibliographies of suggestions for further reading.

Genetics by Herbert Eugene Walter Pdf

Excerpt from Genetics: An Introduction to the Study of Heredity The following pages had their origin in a course of lectures upon Heredity, given at Brown University during the winter of 1911 - 1912, which were amplified and repeated in part the following summer at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, before the biological summer school of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. An attempt has been made to summarize for the intelligent, but uninitiated, reader some of the more recent phases of the questions of heredity which are at present agitating the biological world. It is hoped that this summary will not only be of interest to the general reader, but that it will also be of service in college courses dealing with evolution and heredity. The subject of heredity concerns every one, but many of those who wish to become better informed regarding it are either too busily engaged or lack the opportunity to study the matter out for themselves. The recent literature in this field is already very large, with every indication that much more is about to follow, which is a further discouragement to non technical readers. Modes of Research in Genetics (Classic Reprint) by Raymond Pearl Pdf

Excerpt from Modes of Research in Genetics Demands which have come to the writer from teachers of genetics and biometry in various agricultural colleges and universities for separate copies of one of the papers reprinted in this volume, in order that they might put it in the hands of their students, have suggested that there is a rather widespread and genuine desire to examine care fully the underlying methodological bases of modern genetic science. It is hoped that the present volume may serve as an introduction to this subject. Even though the reader may not agree with either the reasoning or the conclusions, if he is stirred up to further thought and reading about the matter, the purpose of the writer will have been served. In these days of extreme specialization and great activity in biological research far too little attention is paid to the fundamental philosophical background of science. Genetics (Classic Reprint) by H. S. Jennings Pdf

Excerpt from Genetics This book is an attempt to present the fundamental fea tures Of Genetics: those features of which every educated person Should have knowledge. Resemblances and differences among organisms are due largely to diversities in the ma ferials with which the different individuals begin life. This fact forms the guiding principle in the presentation here given. The distinction commonly made between heredity and the mechanism Of heredity is therefore abandoned; such a distinction is out of date. Only through knowledge of the materials on which heredity depends, and an understanding of their methods Of operation, is it possible to understand the course taken by heredity and variation, so that study of these matters forms the groundwork of Genetics. This groundwork involves detailed facts and relations that must be thoroughly grasped; these are presented so far as possible in sharply defined form; they are in many cases condensed into formal numbered propositions. In the chapters dealing with more general relations, and based on the earlier chapters, the material is presented in the more usual form Of continuous discourse. References to sources are collected into notes at the ends of the chapters. For the better known matters, already gathered into books or mono graphs, reference is made to such collective accounts, from which the original sources can be traced if desired. For more recent knowledge, not yet unified, references are given to original papers; such are more common in the later chapters.
