Jean Grave and the Networks of French Anarchism, 1854-1939 by Constance Bantman Pdf

This biography charts the life and fascinating long militant career of the French anarchist journalist, editor, theorist, writer, campaigner and educator Jean Grave (1854-1939), from the run up to the 1871 Paris Commune to the eve of the Second World War. Through Grave, it explores the history of the French and international anarchist communist movement over seven decades: its “heroic period” (1880-1890s), shaken by terrorist violence and intense repression, the emergence of syndicalism, national and international solidarity campaigns, the divisions over the First World War, and post-war division and relegation. Through Grave, a “sedentary transnationalist,” the study investigates the networked and transnational organisation of the anarchist movement, addressing the paradox of Grave’s international influence alongside his deep rootedness in Paris by emphasizing the movement’s global print culture and staggering circulations.

Illegitimate Children of the Enlightenment by C. Alexander McKinley Pdf

The early years of Third French Republic (1880-1914) saw multiple political factions vying for the legacy of the French Revolution. This book examines one of those factions, the anarchist movement, and the role played by the French Revolution in its political thought and action. The French Revolution became a vital, if not well recognized, tool of the anarchist movement to popularize and legitimize its revolutionary activity while engaged in a struggle with other political forces of the Republic to claim ownership over the Revolutionary heritage. The anarchists of the Third Republic wrote histories of the Revolution that reflected their own political orientation. They asserted themselves as part of the intellectual tradition of the Enlightenment, which they believed had helped spark the Revolution. The anarchists appropriated the music and popular culture of the French Revolution in their own propaganda. Moreover, they orchestrated revolutionary action and political theatre on the day most associated with the Revolution, July 14. In the Revolution, the anarchists saw glimmers of hope, precursors to their own movement, as well as an effective means to present their message to a wider audience as they also offered models for others to imitate.

Paris and the Anarchists by Alexander Varias Pdf

Anarchists in late nineteenth-century France were no more successful in toppling the established order and creating an ideal society than was the case anywhere else. Nevertheless, their experience in 'fin-de-siecle' Paris revealed a labyrinthine diversity belying their actual political influence and numbers. Paris and the Anarchists analyzes the nature of Parisian anarchist concerns - including the French Revolutionary tradition, the Third Republic, terrorism, the Dreyfus Affair, modernization, and questions pertaining to art and propaganda.

The French Anarchists in London, 1880-1914 by Constance Bantman Pdf

Fleeing repression and persecution, nearly five hundred French-speaking anarchists moved to London between 1880 and 1914, where they developed a unique community deeply shaped by political exile and activism. In this book Constance Bantman explores the history of these largely unknown people and the ways they reinvented anarchism at a time of tremendous political change. She looks at how they struggled in the massive late-Victorian metropolis, tracing their social and political interactions and examining the effects British and French surveillance had on their lives. An in-depth look at a fascinating community, The French Anarchists in London lends historical insight into contemporary concerns about transnational terrorist groups and immigration in Europe.

The French Anarchists in London, 1880-1914 by Constance Bantman Pdf

This book is a study of political exile and transnational activism in the late-Victorian period. It explores the history of about 500 French-speaking anarchists who lived in exile in London between 1880 and 1914, with a close focus on the 1890s, when their presence peaked. These individuals sought to escape intense repression in France, at a time when anarchist-inspired terrorism swept over the Western world. Until the 1905 Aliens Act, Britain was the exception in maintaining a liberal approach to the containment of anarchism and terrorism; it was therefore the choice destination of international exiled anarchists, just as it had been for previous generations of revolutionary exiles throughout the nineteenth century. These French groups in London played a strategic role in the reinvention of anarchism at a time of crisis, but also triggered intense moral panic in France, Britain and beyond.
