Aphasia by William Elder Pdf

Excerpt from Aphasia: And the Cerebral Speech Mechanism The greater part of this work consists of my Edinburgh University M.D. Thesis. I put it before the Medical Profession as an attempt to elucidate a very difficult but very interesting subject-a subject which, if we thoroughly understood it, would, I believe, give us the key to a knowledge of a great part of the mechanism of cerebral functions. The work does not aim at a description of all the disorders of speech; its scope has been confined to the central mechanism concerned in speech written and spoken, the disturbances of that mechanism, and the localisation of the lesions which produce those disturbances. Special attention has been devoted to the differential diagnosis of the clinical varieties of aphasia, and wherever possible the varieties have been illustrated by cases of my own observation. Brain-Based Communication Disorders by Leonard L. LaPointe,Bruce E. Murdoch,Julie A. G. Stierwalt Pdf

Brain-Based Communication Disorders introduces the reader to the major clinically recognized types of acquired speech/language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders encountered by clinicians working with child and adult neurological cases. The text provides contemporary and state-of-the-art content on these disorders in terms of their neuropathological bases, clinical symptomatology, and prognosis. Basic anatomy and physiology of human communication and swallowing is introduced, as well as the neural mechanisms controlling speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing functions. In addition to the traditional acquired speech/language disorders of the nervous system (aphasia; neuromotor speech disorders) content including communication impairments caused by traumatic brain injury, multisystem blast injuries, and degenerative disorders of the nervous system is also provided. The reader is also introduced to the principles that govern the assessment and treatment for both pediatric and adult populations.

Acquired Speech and Language Disorders by B. E. Murdoch Pdf

The stimulus for writing this book arose from the author's perception of a lack of available texts which adequately integrate the subjects of neuroanatomy and functional neurology with the practice of speech language pathology. This perception was gained from almost two decades of teaching in the areas of neuroanatomy and acquired neuro logical speech-language disorders to speech pathology students initially at the South Australian College of Advanced Education and, for the past five years, at the University of Queensland. Although a plethora of excellent texts devoted specifically to each of the subjects of neuroanatomy, neurology and aphasiology have been published, few have attemped to integrate these individual subject areas in such a way as to provide a more clear understanding of the neurological bases of clinically recognized forms of aphasia and motor speech disorders. In writing this text, I have attempted to provide a better balance between neuroanatomy-neurology and. speech-language pathology. Relevant areas of neuroanatomy and neurology are introduced and discussed in the context of specific speech and language disorders. In this way, I have aimed at providing a better link between the relevant neuroanatomical and neurological knowledge on the one hand, and specific neurologically based communication disorders on the other, in order to enhance the reader's understanding of the origins, course and prognosis of these disorders. Of course the writing of any book requires the support and encouragement of other people. This text was no exception.

Cerebral Control of Speech and Limb Movements by G.R. Hammond Pdf

Discussed in this book is the association between speech and movements, especially those of the preferred hand. Both are skilled motor activities that appear to depend upon a similar neural organization that is available in the left hemisphere of the brain. The nature of this association of the cerebral control of speech and skilled manual performance is discussed in four sections: 1. Motor control and speech examines speech as a motor activity 2. Language and gesture examines the correspondence between spoken language and manual gesture 3. Motor performance and aphasia examines the motor impairments associated with aphasias 4. Interactions of speech and manual performance examines the interactions that occur between concurrent verbal and manual activities

Aphasia and Language by Stephen E. Nadeau,Leslie Janine Rothi,Bruce Crosson Pdf

This groundbreaking work brings together leading scientist-practitioners to review what is known about aphasia and to relate current knowledge to treatment. Integrating traditional linguistic formulations with new insights derived from cognitive neuroscience, this volume explores the neuropsychological bases of both normal and pathologic language. It reflects an understanding of brain structure and function based on new developments in connectionist modeling and functional neuroimaging.

Language Processing in the Primary Cortex by Antonia Jocher Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: The thesis aims to transmit knowledge about which cortical brain areas may be involved in language processing and how these mechanisms may be structured. Furthermore, an overview of how language-brain relations were seen in the past is given, followed by a basic anatomical description of the whole brain to fully understand neural language mechanisms. In addition, major language disorder types whose examinations have contributed to the location of language functions are described. The work concludes with an outline of the most important investigative methods by means of which detailed scientific language-related research could be conducted.
