Defending Copernicus and Galileo by Maurice A. Finocchiaro Pdf
Although recent works on Galileo’s trial have reached new heights of erudition, documentation, and sophistication, they often exhibit inflated complexities, neglect 400 years of historiography, or make little effort to learn from Galileo. This book strives to avoid such lacunae by judiciously comparing and contrasting the two Galileo affairs, that is, the original controversy over the earth’s motion ending with his condemnation by the Inquisition in 1633, and the subsequent controversy over the rightness of that condemnation continuing to our day. The book argues that the Copernican Revolution required that the hypothesis of the earth’s motion be not only constructively supported with new reasons and evidence, but also critically defended from numerous old and new objections. This defense in turn required not only the destructive refutation, but also the appreciative understanding of those objections in all their strength. A major Galilean accomplishment was to elaborate such a reasoned, critical, and fair-minded defense of Copernicanism. Galileo’s trial can be interpreted as a series of ecclesiastic attempts to stop him from so defending Copernicus. And an essential thread of the subsequent controversy has been the emergence of many arguments claiming that his condemnation was right, as well as defenses of Galileo from such criticisms. The book’s particular yet overarching thesis is that today the proper defense of Galileo can and should have the reasoned, critical, and fair-minded character which his own defense of Copernicus had.

Merz Telescopes by Ileana Chinnici Pdf
This book comprises a fascinating collection of contributions on the Merz telescopes in Italy that collectively offer the first survey on historical large refracting telescopes in the country, drawing on original documents and photographs. It opens with a general introduction on the importance of Merz telescopes in the history of astronomy and analyses of the local and international contexts in which the telescopes were made. After examination of an example of the interaction between the maker and the astronomer in the construction and maintenance of these refractors, the history of the Merz telescopes at the main Italian observatories in the nineteenth century is described in detail. Expert testimony is also provided on how these telescopes were successfully used until the second half of the twentieth century for research purposes, thus proving their excellent optical qualities.

On trial for reason by Maurice A. Finocchiaro Pdf
In 1633 the Roman Inquisition condemned Galileo as a suspected heretic for defending the astronomical theory that the earth moves, and implicitly assuming the theological principle that Scripture is not scientific authority. This controversial event has sent ripples down the centuries, embodying the struggle between a thinker who came to be regarded as the Father of Modern Science, and an institution that is both one of the world's greatest religions and most ancient organizations. The trial has been cited both as a clear demonstration of the incompatibility between science and religion, and also a stunning exemplar of rationality, scientific method, and critical thinking. Much has been written about Galileo's trial, but most works argue from a particular point of view - that of secular science against the Church, or justifying the religious position. Maurice Finocchiaro aims to provide a balanced historical account that draws out the cultural nuances. Unfolding the intriguing narrative of Galileo's trial, he sets it against its contemporary intellectual and philosophical background. In particular, Finocchiaro focuses on the contemporary arguments and evidence for and against the Earth's motion, which were based on astronomical observation, the physics of motion, philosophical principles about the nature of knowledge, and theological principles about the authority and the interpretation of Scripture. Following both sides of the controversy and its far-reaching philosophical impact, Finocchiaro unravels the complex relationship between science and religion, and demonstrates how Galileo came to be recognised as a model of logical reasoning.

Astrum Divinus by John D Christopher Pdf
All his life, Dr. Peter Northcott has been plagued by disturbing dreamsapocalyptic scenes of angels and demons and visions of fire and blood. Concentrating on his scholarly life in Rome, Peter is approaching his thirty-third birthday when he is accosted by a mysterious priest. Father Renauld claims to have important information regarding Peters destiny. He spins a tale of secret societies and ancient texts and enemies who not only threaten Peter himself but the whole of creation. Peter retreats to his adopted parents home in England. Even there, he is haunted by dreams of Armageddon. His parents beg him to listen to the priests story. Can these intelligent people really believe in a war of cosmic proportions? What was the true motivation behind Peters adoption? Reluctantly, Peter visits a subterranean cavern, situated deep in the bowels of the Pyrenees Mountains, to retrieve an ancient scroll. Records of fire, murder, and secrets echo Peters visions, but can he really be the divine star, the savior of the world? The idea is unthinkable, but what if it is true? What if he is the Astrum Divinus?

London City of Revelation by C.E. Street Pdf
Paperback re-print of Earthstars The Visionary Landscape. London's Sacred sites are not scattered about the capital at random. Many form a recognisable pattern of sacred geometry, a vast temple groundplan identical to the design used to lay out Stonehenge's megaliths over 3,500 years ago. Astonishingly, it also relates to the measures and proportions of the New Jerusalem, The City of Revelation. If the conclusions drawn by the author are correct, this pattern is a circuit diagram of the forces of creation and a new evolutionary impulse is coming through our sacred sites, a transformatory influence which will change the way we perceive the world

The Singapore Convention on Mediation by Nadja Alexander,Shouyu Chong,Vakhtang Giorgadze Pdf
The Singapore Convention on Mediation is just beginning its life as an international legal instrument. How is it likely to fare? In the second edition of this comprehensive, article-by-article commentary, the authors provide a robust report on the features of the Convention and their implications, with an analysis of potential controversies and authoritative clarifications of particular provisions. The book’s meticulous examination considers these issues and topics: international mediated settlement agreements as a new type of legal instrument in international law; types of settlement agreements that fall within the scope of the Convention; how the Convention’s enforcement mechanism works; the meaning of ‘international’ and the absence of a seat of mediation; the Convention’s approach to recognition and enforcement of international mediated settlement agreements; the grounds for refusal to grant relief under the Convention; mediator misconduct as a ground for refusal to grant relief; the role of confidentiality in granting relief for international mediated settlement agreements; the impact of the Convention on private international law; the relationship of the Singapore Convention to other international instruments such as the UN Model Law on International Commercial Mediation and the New York Convention on Arbitration; possibilities for Contracting States to declare reservations; court decisions from around the globe on the recognition and enforceability of international mediated settlement agreements; and domestic mediation legislation including domestic laws that implement the Singapore Convention. This book takes a giant step towards relieving the inherent uncertainty associated with how this newly constituted instrument may operate, and how States may become ‘Convention ready’. It is an essential reference for international lawyers, mediators and government officials as the Convention proves itself in the coming years.
