Pests and Pollinators of Vegetable and Oilseed Crops by Dharam P. Abrol Pdf

Pest management for vegetable crops and safety provision for the pollinators is a challenging task in the context to increase vegetable productivity without upsetting the ecological balance. The book Pests and Pollinators of Vegetable and Oilseed Crops aims to integrate and develop pest control strategies by minimizing their impact on beneficial insect species such as natural enemies and pollinators for enhancing fruit production and quality. A detailed account is provided on pests and pollinators of oilseed crops such as Cruciferous, Solanaceous, Umbelliferous, Cucurbitaceous, Malvaceous, Leguminous and Alliaceae. The compilation of this book is unique as it does not deal only with the conventional way of pest management for different crops; it takes into consideration the role of pollinators and their profitable utilization in the larger context of ecologically based pest management and safety of pollinators. An exemplary attempt is made to promote a large, diverse, sustainable and dependable bee pollinator workforce that can meet the challenges of optimizing food production in the twenty-first century and beyond.

Food Systems for Improved Human Nutrition by Palit Kataki,Suresh Chandra Babu Pdf

Learn to produce crops with improved nutrition to alleviate malnourishment--using sustainable agriculture techniques! Utilizing complete food systems to improve nutrition has become a priority in the fight against malnutrition. This book examines all aspects of food systems, drawing on examples from various countries and geographical regions. Bringing together the most recent work of international experts, Food Systems for Improved Human Nutrition provides an important overview of the food systems approach. It also explores the extent of malnourishment in different areas; presents case studies from South Asia, China, India, Bangladesh, and East Africa; points to ways to improve food production and nutrient quality; and suggests directions for future research. Helpful charts and tables make the information in this well-referenced book easy to access and understand. Food Systems for Improved Human Nutrition brings you state-of-the-art information on: the potential benefits of agroforestry systems how to fortify food with micronutrients how to design population-appropriate nutrition interventions the ways that rapid economic change can affect human nutrition in a given area biotech approaches to improve nutrition in rice and maize crops crossbred cow technologies in the East African highlands and much more!

Proven Successes in Agricultural Development by David J. Spielman,Rajul Pandya-Lorch Pdf

The world has made enormous progress in the past 50 years toward eliminating hunger and malnutrition. While, in 1960, roughly 30 percent of the world's population suffered from hunger and malnutrition, today less than 20 percent doessome five billion people now have enough food to live healthy, productive lives. Agricultural development has contributed significantly to these gains by increasing food supplies, reducing food prices, and creating new income and employment opportunities for some of the world's poorest people. This book examines where, why, and how past interventions in agricultural development have succeeded. It carefully reviews the policies, programs, and investments in agricultural development that have reduced hunger and poverty across Africa, Asia, and Latin America over the past half century. The 19 successes included here are described in in-depth case studies that synthesize the evidence on the intervention's impact on agricultural productivity and food security, evaluate the rigor with which the evidence was collected, and assess the tradeoffs inherent in each success. Together, these chapters provide evidence of "what works" in agricultural development.

Experimental Techniques in Host-Plant Resistance by Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy,Venkatesan Selvanarayanan Pdf

The earliest land-plants evolved around 450 million years ago from aquatic plants devoid of vascular systems. The diversification of flowering plants (angiosperms) during the Cretaceous period is associated with speciation in insects. Early insect herbivores were mandibulate, but the evolution of vascular plants led to the co-evolution of other forms of herbivory, such as leaf feeding, sap-sucking, leaf mining, tissue borer, gall forming and nectar-feeding. Plant defense against biotic stress is an adaptive evolution by plants to increase their fitness. Plants use a variety of strategies to defend against damage caused by herbivores. Plant defense mechanisms are either inbuilt or induced. Inbuilt mechanisms are always present within the plant, while induced defenses are produced or mobilized to the site where a plant is injured. Induced defense mechanisms include morphological, physiological changes and production of secondary metabolites. Host plant resistance (HPR) is one of the eco-friendly methods of pest management. It protects the crop by making it less suitable or tolerant to the pest. While books on theoretical aspects of HPR are available, an exclusive book on the practical aspects is lacking. There is a wide gap between the theory and the experimental procedures required for conducting studies on plant resistance for the post graduate students and young researchers. A dire need for a book on practical aspects was strongly felt. Initially a practical manual was prepared which eventually evolved into the present book. We hope this book provides information on major aspects of screening crop germplasm, sampling techniques, genetic and biochemical basis of HPR, behavioural studies on pheromone and plant volatiles, and some of the recent approaches in HPR. Further, the references provide the scientific articles and books as additional information to readers and workers alike.
