Baba Padmanji by Deepra Dandekar Pdf

This book is a critical biography of Baba Padmanji (1831-1906), a firebrand native Christian missionary, ideologue, and litterateur from 19th-century Bombay Presidency. Though Padmanji was well-known, and a very influential figure among Christian converts, his contributions have received inadequate attention from the perspective of ‘social reform’ — an intellectual domain dominated by offshoots of the Brahmo Samaj movement, like the Prarthana Samaj in Bombay. This book constitutes an in-depth analysis of Padmanji’s relationships with questions of reform, education, modernity, feminism, and religion, that had wide-ranging repercussions on the intellectual horizon of 19th-century India. It presents Padmanji’s integrated writing persona and identity as a revolutionary pathfinder of his times who amalgamated and blended vernacular ideas of Christianity together with early feminism, modernity, and incipient nationalism. Drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources, this unique book will be of great interest for area studies scholars (especially Maharashtra), and to researchers of modern India, engaged with the history of colonialism and missions, religion, global Christianity, South Asian intellectual history, and literature.

The Emergence of Feminism in India, 1850-1920 by Padma Anagol Pdf

Grounded in a variety of rich and diverse source materials such as periodicals meant for women and edited by women, song and cookbooks, book reviews and court records, the author of this pioneering study mobilises claims for the existence of an Indian feminism in the nineteenth century. Anagol traces the ways in which Indian women engaged with the power structures-both colonialist and patriarchical-which sought to define them. Through her analysis of Indian male reactions to movements of assertion by women, Anagol shows that the development of feminist consciousness in India from the late nineteenth century to the coming of Gandhi was not one of uninterrupted unilinear progression. The book illustrates the ways in which such movements were based upon a consciousness of the inequalities in gender relations and highlights the determination of an emerging female intelligentsia to remedy it. The author's innovative study of women and crime challenges the notion of passivity by uncovering instances of individual resistance in the domestic sphere. Her study of women's perspectives and participation in the Age of Consent Bill debates clearly demonstrates how the rebellion of wives and their assertion in the colonial courts had resulted in male reaction to reform rather than the current historiographical claims that it was a response purely to threats posed by 'colonial masculinity'. Anagol's investigation of the growth of the women's press, their writings and participation in the wider vernacular press highlights the relationship between symbolic or 'hidden' resistance and open assertion by women.

MAHATMA JYOTIRAO PHULE- english by Dr. Ravindra Thakur Translated From MARATHI to ENGLISH by Reshma Kulkarni-Pathare Pdf

"….. It is a very difficult task to write a biographical novel. In order to ensure the right balance of facts with creative liberty, the author needs to have the skills of a good biographer, as well as, a novelist. A biographer is a researcher and collector of memories; whereas, a novelist is mainly a dreamer who can spin stories out of nothingness. But, the author of a biographical novel needs to be an amalgamation of both, creativity and fact-finding, both. S/he needs to diligently record all the facts related to the protagonist's life. Even though s/he may take creative liberty while writing the novel, it cannot be forgotten that finally it is a 'biography', which must do justice to the happenings in the protagonist's life. Dates, timelines, family members, enemies, relations, important incidents etc., need to be mentioned properly, without taking them into the ambit of creative liberty. Only after doing so much preparation does a novelist become set to write a good biographical novel. What prompts a biographer to turn a person's life account into a novel, instead of taking the easy route and narrating his/her story in a straight way? It is the excitement of interspersing an author's gift of imagination and ingenuity with the actualities of the protagonist's life. However, it is a tightrope walk to be able to exercise one's creative abilities, while staying true to the researcher within. Only the perfect alchemy of both these factors can result in an excellent biographical novel." – M.W. Dhond An inspirational biographical novel about the life, times, personality, and revolutionary thoughts of the great man, Jyotirao Phule: 'MAHATMA'

Pandita Ramabai by Meera Kosambi Pdf

This book looks at the life of Pandita Ramabai, one of the major social reformers of 19th-century India. Her unique life trajectory spanned across a pan-Indian, orthodox Hindu mould to being part of Brahmo Samaj and Prarthana Samaj, and further to Christianity. At the age of 30 she had travelled widely within India and across the world, from USA and UK in the West to Japan in the Far East. She reported these fascinating journeys to international friends and fellow Maharashtrians in both English and Marathi. Fighting conservatism and marginalization she set up several projects to empower women, notably, the Sharada Sadan in Mumbai and the Mukti Mission in Kedgaon near Pune in Maharashtra. This work locates Pandita Ramabai within her liminal social milieu and discursive networks during various phases of her life, and traces her diverse ideological routes along with her critical writings, some of which have been retrieved and/or presented in English translation here for the first time, including The High-Caste Hindu Woman and the newly discovered Voyage to England. Offering a comprehensive insight into aspects of 19th-century Indian society — religion and reform, women’s rights and feminism, social movements, poverty, and colonialism — this book will greatly interest researchers and students of South Asian history, sociology, and gender studies.
