Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle by Sigmund Freud Pdf

in Freud's view we are driven by the desire for pleasure as well as by the desire to avoid pain. But the pursuit of pleasure has never been a simple thing. Pleasure can be a form of fear, a form of memory and a way of avoiding reality. Above all, as these essays show with remarkable eloquence, pleasure is a way in which we repeat ourselves. The essays collected in this volume explore, in Freud's uniquely subtle and accessible style, the puzzles of pleasure and morality - the enigmas of human development.

Beyond Pleasure by Evert Peeters,Leen Van Molle,Kaat Wils Pdf

Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.

On Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle by Salman Akhtar,Mary Kay O'Neil Pdf

Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle constitutes a major landmark and a real turning point in the evolution of psychoanalytic theory. Pushing aside the primacy of the tension-discharge-gratification model of mental dynamics, this work introduced the notion of a "daemonic force" within all human beings that slowly but insistently seeks psychic inactivity, inertia, and death. Politely dismissed by some as a pseudo-biological speculation and rapturously espoused by others as a bold conceptual advance, "death instinct" became a stepping stone to the latter conceptualizations of mind's attacks on itself, negative narcissism, addiction to near-death, and the utter destruction of meaning in some clinical situations. The concept also served as a bridge between the quintessentially Western psychoanalysis and the Eastern perspectives on life and death. These diverse and rich connotations of the proposal are elucidated in On Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle". Other consequences of Freud's 1920 paper - namely, the marginalization of ego instincts and the "upgrading" of aggression in the scheme of things - are also addressed.

Pleasure Beyond the Pleasure Principle by Robert A. Glick,Stanley Bone Pdf

Affects, or feelings, are crucial motivators and organizers in our psychological lives. Yet affect and the full range of emotional expressions have been relatively neglected by psychoanalysis since Freud's earliest formulations. This volume, the first in a three-part series addressing the centrality of affect, focuses on pleasure, which Freud believed to be a fundamental quality of affect. Here, psychoanalysts and psychiatrists integrate new understandings from the neurosciences, clinical research and practice, and observational studies of the development of infants and nonhuman mammals, and scholars in the humanities report on the philosophic and aesthetic implications.

Pleasure With Products by William S. Green,Patrick W. Jordan Pdf

The last five years have seen a major paradigm shift in the role of human factors in product design. Previously this was seen as pertaining almost exclusively to product usability, but new recognition is being given to "pleasure-based" human factors. This emphasizes the holistic nature of the experience of person-product interaction. While traditio

This book is based on long term ethnographic research with hijras, the emblematic figure of South Asian sexual and gender difference in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It proposes the hijra as a counter-cultural formation that embodies not only a direct contrast to hegemonic patterns of masculinity but also as an alternative subculture offering the possibility of varied forms of erotic pleasures and practices otherwise forbidden in mainstream society. While most studies view hijras as an asexual, emasculated, third sex/gender, this book calls into question the phallocentric logic that obscures alternative sites and sources of bodily power and pleasure, emphasizing how hijras craft their own subject position. Ethnographically rich and theoretically engaged, this book will cause a new, global re-examination of both hijras in particular and the wider range of 'male femininities' in general.

Liberation Into Orgasm by Sofia Sundari Pdf

Liberation into Orgasm is an invitation to go through pleasure beyond pleasure. This book is not just a bunch of nice ideas that are only good for the mind, it is an invitation to experience Life totally, and live fully, unapologetically, shamelessly as You. This book is for those who are either intrigued by sex but feel a little shy and perhaps have never experienced an orgasm, and for those who are very open yet have the intuition that there must be more to sexuality. And forgive me for running ahead, but yes, there is always more to sexuality. This books is for those who have endless spiritual thirst and those who wish to feel more connected to their true Self in every moment of their life. In the modern day world, we tend to think that sex and spirit are separate from each other. Or, that in order to access the spirit, we need to transcend sex. With this book, I want to serve the healing of the split that we have created between sex and spirit. This split is what causes disconnection, shame, guilt and judgment around something that is the most powerful creative force that moves through human beings - our sexual energy. With this book, I want to reveal the tantric perspective of what is really possible for each human being in this Life. With this book I want to invite you on a journey that will take us through pleasure beyond pleasure. Tantra teaches us to live fully. When someone chooses the path of Tantra, it means they choose to go all the way. To live Tantra means not to shy away from any of the aspects of our life. The Angel's Cry by Michel Poizat Pdf

French in 1986, is now available in Arthur Denner's fluid and sensitive English translation. Predictably, Poizat's route is not at all a conventional one. Rather than taking as his point of departure the intentions of composers and librettists, he is primarily concerned with the expectations and desires of the audience. He reports on an informal group interview with overnight standees on the Paris Opera House steps as they compare notes on how opera became an addiction.

Beyond the Pleasure Dome by Sue Vice,Matthew Campbell,Tim Armstrong Pdf

This volume of essays addresses a fascinating topic in literary and cultural studies - the relation of literature and addiction. Thirty-one contributors, from Europe, Israel and North America, treat the nature of addiction and its connections with fictionalizing and writing. The excessive appetities inspected here range from alcohol, drugs and food to love, sex and gambling. The concept of addiction is also analysed from the perspectives of law, cinema, gender, medicine and religion. Among the authors whose life and works are discussed here include those whose addictions are legendary (Malcolm Lowry, Edgar Allen Poe, Thomas De Quincey, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac) and those who may not immediately be recognized as addicts (Marguerite Duras, Oliver Goldsmith, James Joyce, William Golding, Steven Spielberg).
