Biology of Amphibian Tumors by Merle Mizell Pdf

New Orleans has a distinguished history as a center for medical and biological learning, a history shared by Tulane University, its School of Medicine, and its Bio logical and Medical Sciences departments. This background made it especially fitting that the University, in conjunction with the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, Inc. and the National Cancer Institute, should sponsor the "Symposium: Biology of Amphibian Tumors" held October 28, 29, 30, 1968. The University wishes to express its appreciation to the Cancer Association for its assistance in making the Symposium possible and to acknowledge the support made available through the Bio medical Sciences Support Grant program of the National Institutes of Health. As the title of this volume indicates, the Symposium yielded valuable results in the area of cancer research and it stands to stimulate further efforts in this most important field. Some notion of the impact of this symposium is suggested by the broad range of the 200 participants it attracted. They came not only from the breadth and length of the U.S., but from abroad, from France, England, Austria, and Italy.

Amphibian Biology, Volume 11, Part 3 by Harold Heatwole,John W. Wilkinson Pdf

Amphibian species around the world are unusually vulnerable to a variety of threats, by no means all of which are properly understood. Volume 11 in this major series will be published in parts devoted to the causes of amphibian decline and to conservation measures in regions of the world; this Part 3 is concerned with Western Europe (Britain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal). Experts from each country contribute a chapter describing the ecological background and the conservation status of affected species, with an emphasis on native species. As well as infectious diseases and parasites (also covered in a general chapter), threats take the form of introduced and invasive species, pollution, destruction and alteration of habitat, and climate change. These are discussed as they affect each species. All these countries have monitoring schemes and conservation programmes, whose origins and activities are described. Recommendations for action are also made. Edited by leading scholars in the field, Volume 11, when complete, will therefore provide a definitive survey of the amphibian predicament and a stimulus to further research with the objective of arresting the global decline of an entire class of animal.

Diseases of Amphibians and Reptiles by Gerald Hoff Pdf

While diseases of free-ranging and captive mammalian and avian wildlife species have received considerable interest in the past 25 years, those of amphibians and reptiles (collectively, the herptiles) generally have been assigned lesser importance. The literature concern ing disease in herptiles is widely scattered, consisting chiefly of case reports and prevalence surveys, and with heavy emphasis on captive reptiles. The dynamics of the host-agent-environment relationship have been studied for only a few diseases. This diverse data base is primarily a function of the paucity of investigators whose chief interest is in diseases of herptiles. This first edition represents an effort to bring together some of the diffuse knowledge on infectious and non-infectious diseases of free-ranging and captive herp tiles. Issue may be taken with the choice of topics; how ever, predominant diseases, as well as some diseases of lesser prominence, are presented. The editors were forced to accept certain omissions, particularly with amphibian diseases, simply for lack of contributors. The resulting text, however, we hope will be of value to veterinarians, herpetolo, gists, wildlife disease investigators, wildlife managers, zoo curators, and university students. G.L. Hoff F.L. Physiology of the Amphibia by Brian Lofts Pdf

Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume III consists of 10 chapters beginning with a discussion on amphibian color changes and the various aspects of the molting cycle. Possessing a skin more suitable for life in the water, the amphibians need to prevent excessive water loss from their body to the environment; hence, an additional mechanism for reducing the hazards of desiccation in many anuran species is described. This book also tackles the physiology of amphibian cells in culture. Furthermore, the animals' nervous, visual, and auditory systems; their immunity; and metamorphosis are explained in this text. This reference will be useful to general biologists and to students with interests in animal physiology.

Reproductive Technologies and Biobanking for the Conservation of Amphibians by Andy J. Kouba,Aimee J. Silla,Harold Heatwole Pdf

How to decelerate loss of global biodiversity is one of the greatest challenges of our generation. Reproductive technologies have enormous potential to assist the recovery of species by enhancing reproductive output, facilitating genetic management, and supporting reintroduction of threatened species. Of particular value are cryopreservation technologies coupled with the establishment of global gene banks to conserve, in perpetuity, the remaining extant genetic diversity of threatened amphibians. Reproductive Technologies and Biobanking for the Conservation of Amphibians brings together leading experts in the field to provide a comprehensive overview of current best practices, summarise technological advancements, and present a framework for facilitating the integration of reproductive technologies and biobanking into conservation breeding programs for threatened amphibians. It is an invaluable reference for the next generation of conservation practitioners: captive breeding facilities, researchers, and policy-makers involved with biodiversity conservation.

Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology by A. Davies Pdf

This second volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology considers many aspects of thymus dependency in order to exemplify the role of the thy mus in different species and different immunological responses. It is not in tended to be a compendium of the responses which have been shown to be thymus dependent but rather to illustrate for the reader the criteria he should apply in thinking about the significance of the thymus in immune responses. We are grateful to the editors and publishers of the Annals of the New York Academy of Science, the Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, Clinical and Experimental Immunology, Immunology, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the Journal of Immunology, Laboratory Investigation, Nature, and the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine and to Springer-Verlag, Berlin, for permission to reproduce illustrations. Specific references are given in the text. We would also like to thank the contributors for their time and energy and willingness to submit to the editorial red pencils. The exercise of these censori ous instruments meant that the manuscripts had to be reorganized and retyped. Mrs. J. Pettis, Mrs. A. Inglefield, and Miss M. Butt all helped, and we are most grateful to them. A.J.S.D. R.L.e.

Malignant Bone Tumors by E. Grundmann Pdf

Bone Tumors - A Challenge for Cooperation E. GRUNDMANN Among the wide variety of human tumors, those of the skeletal system have an exceptional position in several respects. Above all, they are comparatively rare, and that is why reliable diagnostic criteria were compiled only recently, that is during the last three decades. It is only five years since the outlines of an international code of classi fication were traced. The code was applied and discussed critically and with varying results by several international working groups. Cer tain drawbacks are due to the broad and manifold spectrum of histolo gic manifestations in neoplastic bone. Even the best experts in dia gnostic histology would hardly be able to classify more than 85% of all bone tumors after the proposed code system. For quite a long time the osteoclastic giant cells, observed in almost any kind of bone tumor, have so much fascinated the histologist's eye that he was apt to pro claim the diagnosis "brown giant cell tumor" for almost any osteoclas tic tumor regardless of its benignity or malignancy. Nowadays the group of "giant cell tumors" though'restricted, still remains disputed in terms of malignancy and benignity. The problem will certainly not be settled in a definite way without extensive follow-up studies. In this context we may see actual progress in new regional. bone tumor registries being set up after the American example in many countries, among them the German Federal Republic.
