Novel Aspects of Insect-Plant Interactions Edited by Pedro Barbosa and Deborah Letourneau This volume represents the forefront of two rapidly advancing areas of ecology: three-trophic-level interactions and the interdisciplinary field of chemical ecology The book focuses on the role of microorganisms as mediators of interactions between insects and plants, providing critical appraisal of studies and suggesting ways to integrate competing hypotheses of insect-plant dynamics. 1988 (0 471-83276-6) 362 pp. Arthropod Biological Control Agents and Pesticides Brian A. Croft Examining the effects of pesticides on predators and parasites and exploring methods for reducing negative impacts of pesticide use, this book focuses on the interaction of pesticides with entomophagous arthropods. It surveys the history of research in the field and discusses susceptibility assessment, lethal, sublethal, and ecological effects of pesticides, and selectivity, resistance, and resistance management. 1990 (0 471-81975-1) 723 pp. Lepidopteran Anatomy, John Eaton This single-source treatment on the anatomy of Lepidoptera provides a detailed exposition of its anatomy plus all its life stages, including the larva and adult forms of the exoskeleton, musculature, organ systems, and specialized structures. As the only thorough examination of the morphology of this insect group, it is an essential acquisition for entomologists, morphologists, and insect physiologists. 1988 (1-05862-9) 257 pp. Integrated Pest Management Systems and Cotton Production Edited by Ray Frisbie, Kamal El-Zik, and L. Ted Wilson The most complete and authoritative work available on the subject, this book brings together information on integrated pest management strategies that are applicable to cotton. It addresses economic, agronomic, and biological factors of pest management and focuses on plant resistance to pests and the genetic rationale for improving plant health. 1989 (0 471-81782-1) 437 pp.

Biology, Ecology and Systematics of Australian Scelio by Paul Dangerfield,Andrew Austin,Graeme Baker Pdf

Parasitic wasps of the genus Scelio play an important role in the regulation of orthopteran populations and are implicated in suppressing numbers of numerous pest locusts and grasshoppers. This landmark volume provides a full taxonomic treatment of the sixty species of Scelio found on the Australian continent and reviews in detail the biology and ecology and host relationships of Scelio on a worldwide basis. Taking an international perspective, the text outlines our current knowledge on topics such as host finding, population biology, and methods and techniques for collection and study in the field. The use of Scelio as biological control agents is discussed and comprehensive checklists document the recorded host relationships of each known species worldwide. There is a full taxonomic revision of all Australian species of Scelio, half of which are newly described. Each species description is complemented with high-quality line drawings, micrographs and distribution maps. In addition, an illustrated key to species enables easy identification of species by non-taxonomists. Biology, Ecology and Systematics of Australian Scelio provides wasp taxonomists, researchers of orthoptera and biological control workers with a basis for detailed studies elsewhere on this economically important group of insects.

The Songs of the Grasshoppers and Crickets of Western Europe by David R. Ragge,W. J. Reynolds Pdf

Most of the 170 species of grasshoppers and crickets included in this book can be identified instantly by their songs – and often more reliably than from their appearance. Orthopterans have recently become important subjects in evolutionary biological studies and are also increasingly used in the field of conservation as indicators of undisturbed habitat. The book comprises the following chapters: Introduction; Acoustic Methods; Sound Production and Reception of European Orthoptera; The Nature and Function of the Songs; The Value of the Songs in Taxonomy and Identification; Key to the singing Orthoptera of Western Europe, based primarily on their Songs; and other Animal Sounds that could be confused with Orthoptera Songs – illustrated with over 1600 oscillograms; three Appendixes (Check-list of the species included; Summary of Nomenclatural Changes; Data for the Song Recordings); Glossary; References; Index to Vernacular Names; and General Index.

The North American Grasshoppers by Daniel Otte Pdf

Having received such lavish praise for the first volume of his definitive taxonomic handbook, Daniel Otte now turns his attention to the bandwing grasshoppers. As before, the book includes: - Highly detailed, full-color drawings of all species, including more than one color phase when appropriate; - Illustrated keys and lists of principal recognition features; - Information on distributional limits, habitat preferences, ecology, behavior, and life cycle; - Excellent point-distribution maps; - Pertinent references, taxonomic index, history of name changes, and an explanation of the characters used to derive phylogenies. Like its predecessor, this volume will be useful to scientists in agriculture, environmental assessment, biogeography, grassland ecology, and insect taxonomy. It will also appeal to amateur naturalists.

Grasshoppers and Grassland Health by Jeffrey A. Lockwood,Alexandre V. Latchininsky,Michael G. Sergeev Pdf

Acridids (grasshoppers and locusts) can range from being rare curiosities to abundant menaces. Some are threatened with extinction and become subjects of intensive conservation efforts, while others are devastating pests and become the objects of massive control programmes. Even within a species, there are times when the animal is so abundant that its crushed masses cause the wheels of trains to skid (the Rocky Mountain grasshopper, Melanoplus spretus Walsh in western North America in the 1860s and I 870s), while at other times the animal is alarmingly scarce (the Rocky Mountain grasshopper went extinct in the early 1900s). Why are there these extremes in one insect family, and even in a single species? The NATO workshop examined this paradox and its implications for Environmental Security, which must address both the elements of land use (agricultural production and pest management) and conservation of biodiversity. The reconciliation of these objectives clearly demands a critical assessment of current knowledge and policies, identification of future research, and close working relationships among scientists. Insects can present two clear faces, as well as the intervening gradation. These extremes require us to respond in two ways: conservation of scarce species and suppression of abundant (harmful) species. But perhaps most important, these opposite poles also provide the opportunity for an exchange of information and insight.

The Bionomics of Grasshoppers, Katydids and Their Kin by S. K. Gangwere,Meera Muralirangan Pdf

This book presents a broad review of the biology of grasshoppers and plague locusts, as well as katydids, crickets, mantises and other economically important orthopteroid insects. While grasshopper and locust plagues have decreased recently in North America, they continue unabated in many other parts of the world, including South America, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and western and southern Asia. Similarly, katydids attack cereals, orchards and other cultivated vegetation, and crickets damage tea, coffee and tuber crops among other plants. There have been considerable advances in our knowledge of these groups since other books addressing this subject were published. These other books have also focused on a more limited range of taxa. This book is written from a broad, comparative biological, behavioral and evolutionary approach best expressed by the neglected term bionomics. It thus covers systematics, distribution, behavior, physiology and genetics, as well as pest control and conservation. Written by authorities from the USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Israel, South Africa, India and Russia, it represents a major work for entomologists and those concerned with crop protection from pest Orthoptera.

Grasshopper Dreaming by Jeffrey A. Lockwood Pdf

Grasshopper Dreaming is a collection of first-person musings about the ethical and philosophical implications of the author's work as an entomologist who specializes in grasshoppers and pest control. Lockwood deftly explores the moral implications of his work and speculates on about the actual relationship between "pests" and humanity if we consider all living creatures to have value in and of themselves, regardless of their usefulness or inconvenience for us. The author, self-described as "a hired assassin for agriculture," offers readers a rich account of the sometimes painful, often odd, occasionally funny, and invariably complex realizations that come out of balancing a religious perspective with the practices of modern science and technology. Based on fifteen years of work, the essays in this book represent the rare and compelling integration of understanding of nature with the perspective of a world-class ecologist and struggling mystic.
