Calcium: A Matter of Life or Death by Anonim Pdf

Calcium is a versatile carrier of signals regulating many aspects of cellular activity such as fertilization to create a new life and programmed cell death to end it. Calcium homeostasis is strictly controlled by channels, pumps and exchangers functioning as gates for calcium entry and release. Given that calcium is such a versatile messenger the field of calcium signaling is continuously and rapidly expanding. This book reviews the most recent developments in calcium signaling by leading experts in the field. It is a state-of-the-art summary of our present knowledge in this quickly growing field and provides insight into the impressive progress made in many areas of calcium signaling, while reminding us of how much remains to be learned.

New Trends in Osteoarthritis Treatment by Elisa Belluzzi,Assunta Pozzuoli Pdf

Osteoarthritis can be categorized as the deterioration of protective cartilage surrounding joints resulting in swelling, pain and increased difficulty in joint movement. Several factors are known to increase risk of osteoarthritis such as joint injury, comorbidity with other conditions (rheumatoid arthritis), age and obesity. While joint damage is irreversible, symptoms can be managed and various life-style changes can slow disease progression. To date, there is no cure for osteoarthritis and while joint damage is irreversible, symptoms can be managed with various life-style changes to slow disease progression. Pain management can often be achieved with over-the-counter analgesics. Alternatives include Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Opioids, Capsaicin cream, and in extreme cases Steroid injections. Non-pharmaceutical treatments include physiotherapy, assisted devices such as specialized footwear and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). In cases of extreme joint damage various surgeries may be available to patients, such as arthroplasty surgery.

Essentials of Apoptosis by Xiao-Ming Yin,Zheng Dong Pdf

This is the second edition of the comprehensive, concise summary of apoptosis research. It covers the major concepts, molecular architecture, the biochemical pathways, and pathophysiological significance of apoptosis. This book provides a guideline of standard biochemical and cell biologic approaches to apoptosis bench work with an emphasis on translational clinical applications for immune disorders, cancer research, ischemia, and neuronal degeneration. Since the original publication in 2003, the apoptosis field has expanded rapidly – chapters not only need to be revised and expanded, but there is a need for all new chapters covering exciting advances in bioinformatics, systems biology, oxidative stress, etc.

Apoptosis by Michael D. Jacobson,Nicola J. McCarthy Pdf

The number of cells within the human body is very tightly regulated: too many and we can develop cancer, too few and we may lose cells that we cannot replace. The number of cells is controlled by several different mechanisms in different tissues, but all are triggered to commit suicide should too many be in one place at one time, or become damaged. This book examines how this process of cell suicide (apoptosis) is regulated, and how our understanding of this process may lead to novel treatments for a wide variety of human diseases.

Life and death of a rural village in Garamantian Times. Archaeological investigations in the oasis of Fewet (Libyan Sahara) by Lucia Mori Pdf

This volume presents the results of the archaeological investigations in the oasis of Fewet (SW Libyan Sahara), carried out by the Archaeological Mission in the Sahara of the Sapienza University of Rome. Evidences of an ancient rural village were identified under the houses of the modern town of Tan Afella and a large necropolis, dated to the Garamantian times, spread at the fringes of the modern settlement. Until 1997 very little was known on the Garamantian period in the Wadi Tanezzuft area and on the transition from the pastoral to the early-historical phase. This period witnessed the gradual sedentarisation of human groups in the oases, and the development of caravan routes with the flourishing of an intra- and trans-Saharan trade. These processes, also influenced by significant alterations in climate, which led to the agricultural exploitation of the limited areas where water resources were available – the oases – were archaeologically unknown as far as settlements were concerned. The archaeological surveys and excavations carried out in the area of Fewet were particularly promising and are here analysed in a multidisciplinary perspective, which takes into consideration environmental and anthropological studies in the attempt to reconstruct the culture and the life of people inhabiting the Southern Fezzan region in early-historical times. «The historical archaeology of the Sahara remains an underdeveloped field of research, especially for the pre-Islamic period. The most significant exception to this rule has for long concerned the people known as the Garamantes, who inhabited the central Saharan region coincident with Libya’s south-west province, Fezzan. (…) This volume is a marvelous addition to the small corpus of published research on the Pre-Islamic oasis societies of the Sahara and provides a complementary perspective on the world of the Garamantes to the Anglo-Libyan work I have directed from their heartlands in the Wadi el-Ajal, c. 400 km to north-east of Ghat». Prof. David J. Mattingly, University of Leicester, UK.
