Card-Carrying Christians by Rebecca C. Bartel Pdf

In the waning years of Latin America's longest and bloodiest civil war, the rise of an unlikely duo is transforming Colombia: Christianity and access to credit. In her exciting new book, Rebecca C. Bartel details how surging evangelical conversions and widespread access to credit cards, microfinance programs, and mortgages are changing how millions of Colombians envision a more prosperous future. Yet programs of financialization propel new modes of violence. As prosperity becomes conflated with peace, and debt with devotion, survival only becomes possible through credit and its accompanying forms of indebtedness. A new future is on the horizon, but it will come at a price.

Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe by Gary D. Kinnaman Pdf

Gary Kinnaman contends that many Christians are blinded by what he calls "popular and nonbiblical notions" of God. Applying personal anecdotes, stories from the lives of others, and a large dose of humor, the author challenges ten beliefs that are obstacles to the experience of God's love and providence. With a lighthearted touch, the author rescues readers from stubborn religious lies, such as God grades on a curve; the better you are, the bigger the blessing. And whoppers, such as if God leads you to something, everything will work out just great. Witty and engaging, Kinnaman may offend Christians of all traditions as he provokes them to think more deeply about their faith and their behavior.

Enemies with Smiling Faces by Donald C. Posterski Pdf

The world is a dangerous place. Enemies lurk everywhere--in the workplace, in schools, in small towns and big cities, and even in the church. Their faces are various, but they are equally tempting and deceptive. Learning to recognize these "enemies with smiling faces" can keep you from falling prey to their mind-bending, heart-rending lies. Some enemies mask themselves in popular "Christian" concepts that are not truly biblical: Quick fix faith Feeling-only faith One-sided faith Spiritual superiority Other enemies are disguised as "common-sense" notions prevalent in today's world: Self-construction Affluenza Character without design Privatized faith God calls those who follow him to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves." As Don Posterski reveals the true identities of your enemies, he also teaches you how to develop the discernment you need to find your way in a dangerous world. And because God calls you not simply to resist, but also to love your enemies, Posterski also offers practical, biblical strategies for relating to and living among "enemies with smiling faces."

Master Painter by Jack R. Lundbom Pdf

Millions of people recognize the religious painting know as Head of Christ, of which an estimated five hundred million prints have been sold. Very few, however, know the artist, Warner E. Sallmann. Sallman's lack of notoriety in professional art circles can be explained by the fact that he made little or no attempt to put himself forward as a Chicago or even a Swedish American artist. He had no exhibitions of his works, and his public life consisted largely of appearances before church and community groups to do chalk drawings. More important was his attitude regarding personal fame. Sallman let the Christ he painted be in the foreground, while the artist remained in the background. "The time has come," argues Jack Lundbom, "for a broader public to know the man who stands behind the painting and the other artwork bearing the Sallman signature." Master Painter is a fascinating story of a gifted man with humble beginnings who overcame disappointment, ill health, and personal limitations in order to live out a vision: that his art serve not only for the enjoyment of humankind, but the practical end of instructing persons in the ways of God. Readers who know the art can now know the artist. It is a story eminently worth telling and one a broad public will be interested to know.

Practical Help for Stressed Christians by Andrew Procter,Elizabeth Procter Pdf

Stress is now a huge factor in modern living, with one-third of British workers likely to suffer from it some stage in their careers. Christians are not immune. Indeed it is arguable that they are even more vulnerable to overstress or burnout than secular people because of behavioural expectations relating to God, Church, society, work and the prevailing culture. In order to address these particularities, each short chapter in this engaging book responds to a commonly asked question or typical statement, such as ‘How can I tell if I’m overstressed?’; ‘I’m so disillusioned and swamped at work. I don’t know how long I can carry on.’; ‘I’m not managing time for God as I used to.’ etc. The authors then offer basic information, followed by material for meditation or reflection; encouragement of some sort, and finally something for the reader to work on.

Native Americans, Christianity, and the Reshaping of the American Religious Landscape by Joel W. Martin,Mark A. Nicholas Pdf

The essays here explore a variety of post-contact identities, including indigenous Christians, "mission friendly" non-Christians, and ex-Christians, thereby exploring the shifting world of Native-white cultural and religious exchange. Rather than questioning the authenticity of Native Christian experiences, these scholars reveal how indigenous peoples negotiated change with regard to missions, missionaries, and Christianity. This collection challenges the pervasive stereotype of Native Americans as culturally static and ill-equipped to navigate the roiling currents associated with colonialism and missionization."--pub. desc.

Christian in Public by L. D. Hansen Pdf

Higher education has not escaped the imperative of transformation which has marked the post-apartheid South African landscape. The nature of the changes at universities, however, is open to critique. Fundamental questions concerning the ideological moorings of knowledge and the politics of the curriculum have not yet been satisfactorily addressed. During the apartheid era, theology faculties played influential roles at traditional universities, and were often characterised by unsettling exclusion of non- Christian religions, non-Calvinist denominations and marginalised voices. This volume of essays evidences a process at the University of the Free State?s Faculty of Theology to reflect seriously about the need for transformation at the fundamental level, that is, of knowledge. The challenge for theology at a public university is framed in terms of epistemological transformation. A number of outstanding public intellectuals such as Jonathan Jansen, Crain Soudien and Lis Lange have been invited to present papers to clarify the conceptual challenge and what this might entail for theology. Well-known theologians such as Conrad Wethmar, Allan Boesak and Martin Prozesky reflect on the nature of theology and religion at universities amidst social exigencies. Two international theologians ? Harold Attridge from the prestigious Yale Divinity School and Bram van de Beek from the Free University of Amsterdam ? share their experiences of institutions that exemplify excellence and ecumenical openness. Theologians from the Departments of Practical Theology and Systematic Theology at the University of the Free State, writing from the ?inside?, articulate the challenges they envision for theology in a post-apartheid dispensation. The essays represent a variety of perspectives, but all attest to a commitment to re-think the nature and task of theology at a public university, accepting the challenge of knowledge and power, of plurality and otherness, and of restorative intellectual justice. These timely essays make a unique contribution to the discourses on transformation and on theology at a public university.

Saint Paul and Christian Charity by Stephen Haskell Pdf

Stephen Haskell was born in 1931, and lives in south-east London. After obtaining first class honours in Classics and English from Cambridge University, he received an MA in Christian Spirituality from Heythrop College. He has two daughters and a stepdaughter. Most of his working life has been spent in teaching. His first book, The Pursuit of Holiness, available from St Pauls Publishing, appeared in 2016 with an introduction by Rowan Williams, who called it "e;a treasure of wisdom and insight"e;. His following book, An Introduction to Christian Spirituality, took a close look at what it takes to be a Christian, including chapters on Faith, Hope and Charity, and how much reliance should be placed on conscience. In the present work, like its predecessor available from all good bookshops and on Amazon, Haskell bases himself on what St Paul has to say about charity in 1 Corinthians 13, and emphasises that it is the one essential virtue required of all Christians regardless of their denomination, and that it has to be practised constantly. A common theme linking all three books is that it is by charity, and charity alone, that we shall be saved, and that this is the path that lay Christians, for whom he is mainly writing, should follow if they wish to attain union with God.The image on the front, by Zvonimir Atletic, represents the Crucifixion, and is taken from Prem Dan, one of the houses established by Mother Teresa and run by the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, India.
