Excerpt from Catalogue of 4, 810 Starts for the Epoch 1850: From Observations Made at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, During the Years 1849 to 1852 The observations made with the Transit Instrument and Mural Circle under his direction during the years 1834 to 1840 were reduced by him. The results were finally revised and published under the direction of his successor, Mr. E. J. Stone, and they form the Cape Catalogue for-1840. In 1841 Maclear commenced the field work of his celebrated Verification and Extension of Lacaille's Arc of the Meridian, and till the termination of that work in 1848 the Meridian work of the Observatory was necessarily limited in extent, being chiefly confined to the determination of Time, and the observations of Stars with the Zenith Sector in connexion with the geodetic Operations. Maclear's immediate object in the arrangement of the observations from 1849 was to observe all stars of the British Association Catalogue south of the Equator. And a great deal of time was spent in endeavours to reconcile the observations of Lacaille and others with the results obtained at the Cape. Many interesting discussions on the subject are printed in the Memoirs of the Royal Astronomical Society (vol.
