Harmony and Symmetry. Celestial regularities shaping human culture. by Gudrun Wolfschmidt Pdf

For the SEAC conference in Graz (2018) and for the Proceedings the motto "Harmony and symmetry - celestial regularities shaping human culture" was chosen. There were at least two strong reasons for this motto: First, the connection between astronomy and human culture has an extremely long tradition, and one of its absolute high points is the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who spent his entire life searching for the relationship between the movement of heavenly lights and ideas about harmonious structures and regular bodies. Kepler started his scientific career and authored his first book, the Mysterium cosmographicum, in Graz. Kepler argued in his first publication for the twelve-fold partition of the zodiac with arguments derived from the monochord, anticipating the procedure he developed in his Harmonices mundi. Five contributions deal with Kepler, including the harmony in musical theory. The second reason was the Eggenberg Castle. This palace, built for the nobleman Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg (1568-1634), is a remarkable piece of symmetry and harmony and an outstanding example of a strong connection between astronomy and culture. Seven contributions have the topic astronomy, astrology and architecture with the emphasis on astronomical orientation, symmetry and harmony in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Proceedings with ten chapters and 44 contributions range besides the mentioned "Middle Ages and beyond" and Johannes Kepler from Prehistoric Times, Bronze and Iron Age, Mythology and Ethnoastronomy, Babylonian Astronomy, Greek and Roman Astronomy, Meso- and South America, Middle East and Eastern Asia and Computational Astronomy. The celestial sphere, regarded as the sky of astronomy, as well as the heaven of divine numina, from Antiquity to Copernicus and Kepler was equated with symmetry, harmony, and beauty. Until today, this has been reflected in the structure of cultural creations, from architectural objects to musical forms.

Sky and Symbol by Liz Greene,Nicholas Campion Pdf

Human beings in all cultures have long used the sky to tell stories and weave myths that impart meaning to life on earth. The key to all such systems is symbolism, in which one thing is used to signify, imply, represent, or embody another. The papers included in this volume are all concerned, in one way or another, with various perceptions of the world of celestial phenomena as symbols. These explorations range from art history and analytical psychology to critiques and accounts of astrology, and roam from western to non-western cultures, as well as from the ancient world to the modern. The papers, most of which were given at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Sophia Centre Conference in Bath, UK, in 2011, provide a valuable addition to the scholarly literature on our understanding of the origins, function, and nature of symbols, especially their use in relation to cultural applications of astronomy, astrology, and the sky.

The Shadows of the Abandoned Mine by Eldritch Veil Pdf

Grimhaven, a tranquil town nestled within the ancient Appalachian Mountains, conceals a dark secret within the skeletal remains of the Blackened Gold Mine. Once a thriving symbol of prosperity, the mine now harbors an unspeakable malevolence that awakens shadows and whispers from the depths of the abyss. Samantha Mitchell, a local historian with an affinity for the supernatural, unwittingly becomes the guardian of Grimhaven's descent into the cosmic unknown. As symbols etched into the mine's walls pulse with an otherworldly energy, Samantha is drawn into a surreal dance where reality blurs, and the Veil of Shadows reveals its ancient secrets. The first whispers, haunting and distorted, emerge from the mine, casting an eerie hush over the cobblestone streets. Shadows, once benign, contort into nightmarish forms that linger in the corners of the town. Grimhaven, now ensnared in a cosmic tempest, stands on the brink of an unspeakable reckoning. In this supernatural thriller, the symbols, whispers, and shadows converge to create a chilling symphony that defies the laws of nature. As Samantha delves deeper into the cosmic abyss, the town transforms into a canvas for a malevolent force that challenges the very essence of reality. "The Shadows of the Abandoned Mine" unfolds as a tale of cosmic horror, beckoning the audience into a world where the unknown shadows cast are far more than remnants of the past—they are harbingers of an unimaginable terror.

Seneca Myths and Folk Tales by Arthur Caswell Parker Pdf

"On the Cattaraugus reservation, it was part of a child's initial training to learn why the bear lost its tail, why the chipmunk has a striped back, and why meteors flash in the sky," writes Arthur C. Parker at the beginning of Seneca Myths and Folk Tales. His blood ties to the Senecas and early familiarity with their culture led to a distinguished career as an archaeologist and to the publication in 1923 of this pioneeering work. Parker recreates the milieu in which the Seneca legends and folktales were told and discusses their basic themes and components before going on to relate more than seventy of them that he heard as a boy. Here is the magical Senecan world populated by unseen good and evil spirits, ghosts, and beings capable of transformation. Included are creation myths; folktales involving contests between mortal youths and assorted powers; tales of love and marriage; and stories about cannibals, talking animals, pygmies, giants, monsters, vampires, and witches.
