The Science and Art of Teaching by George Victor Le Vaux Pdf

Excerpt from The Science and Art of Teaching: Or, the Principles and Practice of Education Our design in preparing the following work was to furnish student-teachers, and others engaged in education, with a Manual containing a comprehensive resume, within a moderate compass, of all the more important principles and details of their Profession. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject. Theory and Practice of Teaching by David P. Page Pdf

Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching: Or the Motives and Methods of Good School Keeping If the following volume meets a similar fate, what ever its merits, it shall lack a like excuse. This work has had its origin in a desire to contribute something toward elevating an impor tant and rising profession. Its matter comprises the substance of a part of the course of lectures addressed to the classes of the Institution under my charge, during the past two years. Those lectures, unwritten at first, were delivered in a familiar, colloquial style, - their main Object being the inculcation of such practical views as would best promote the improvement of the teacher. In writing the matter out for the press, the same style, to a considerable extent, has been retained, as I have written with an aim at usefulness rather than rhetorical effect. The attempt has been made to present in a direct and intelligible way the broader outlines and essential characteristics of the teacher's work; more especially the theory of oral teaching, the preparation of lessons, the use of the teaching devices, class management, and the various methods of carrying on instruction in those branches of knowledge which are com mouly taught in schools. Teachers' Problems and How to Solve Them by Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie Pdf

Excerpt from Teachers' Problems and How to Solve Them: A Hand-Book of Educational History and Practice, Or, Comparative Pedagogy; With an Appendix on the Mission and Limits of the History of Education This 'unp'rete'ntious handbook is not called a History of Education for reasons detailed in my pamphlet, entitled Limits and Mission of History of Education. It aims at being a pioneer of the science of Comparative Pedagogy, the object of which is to develop current educational thought by comparative study. As the school has adopted as its centre the child, so must its science adopt as its centre not the various and some times fanciful theories of frequently unfit popular idols, but the problems of the teacher. A subsequent volume will take up the problems of the supervisor in a similar comparative spirit. In the last chapter the teacher will find a number of practical self-helps for the guidance of his teaching method. This volume will be well fitted to serve as source-book for papers and discussions in teachers' conferences. Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by German Woodhead Pdf

Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
