Computational Phraseology by Gloria Corpas Pastor,Jean-Pierre Colson Pdf

Whether you wish to deliver on a promise, take a walk down memory lane or even on the wild side, phraseological units (also often referred to as phrasemes or multiword expressions) are present in most communicative situations and in all world’s languages. Phraseology, the study of phraseological units, has therefore become a rare unifying theme across linguistic theories. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been concerned with the computational treatment of multiword expressions: these pertain among others to their automatic identification, extraction or translation, and to the role they play in various Natural Language Processing applications. Computational Phraseology is a comparatively new field where better understanding and more advances are urgently needed. This book aims to address this pressing need, by bringing together contributions focusing on different perspectives of this promising interdisciplinary field.

Current Issues in Phraseology by Sebastian Hoffmann,Bettina Fischer-Starcke,Andrea Sand Pdf

In this stimulating collection of papers, leading researchers from Europe and North America demonstrate the theoretical and methodological importance of corpus studies of phraseology and show how data-intensive case studies provide new perspectives on language use. One of the main theoretical findings of recent linguistics is that phraseology is central to language organization. The authors show how software and statistical techniques can reveal phraseological patterns in different text types – literary, academic and commercial – and also typical paths of language change across the last 200 years. These patterns are revealed only when computational methods are applied to corpora consisting of hundreds of millions of running words, collected from thousands of authentic texts. A major feature of the book is its critical comparison and evaluation of different quantitative and statistical tools, which readers can use for their own empirical work. Corpus-based and Computational Approaches to Discourse Anaphora by Simon Botley,Tony McEnery Pdf

Discourse anaphora is a challenging linguistic phenomenon that has given rise to research in fields as diverse as linguistics, computational linguistics and cognitive science. Because of the diversity of approaches these fields bring to the anaphora problem, the editors of this volume argue that there needs to be a synthesis, or at least a principled attempt to draw the differing strands of anaphora research together. The selected papers in this volume all contribute to the aim of synthesis and were selected to represent the growing importance of corpus-based and computational approaches to anaphora description, and to developing natural language systems for resolving anaphora in natural language.

Phraseology by Sylviane Granger,Fanny Meunier Pdf

Long regarded as a peripheral issue, phraseology is now taking centre stage in a wide range of fields. This recent explosion of interest undoubtedly has a great deal to do with the development of corpus linguistics research, which has both demonstrated the key role of phraseological expressions in language and provided researchers with automated methods of extraction and analysis. The aim of this volume is to take stock of current research in phraseology from a variety of perspectives: theoretical, descriptive, contrastive, cultural, lexicographic and computational. It contains overview chapters by leading experts in the field and a series of case studies focusing on a wide range of multiword units: collocations, similes, idioms, routine formulae and recurrent phrases. The volume is an invitation for experienced phraseologists to look at the field with different eyes and a useful introduction for the many researchers who are intrigued by phraseology but need help in finding their way in this rich but complex domain.

The Phraseological View of Language by Thomas Herbst,Susen Faulhaber,Peter Uhrig Pdf

This volume presents the results of the international symposium Chunks in Corpus Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, held at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg to honour John Sinclair's contribution to the development of linguistics in the second half of the twentieth century. The main theme of the book, highlighting important aspects of Sinclair's work, is the idiomatic character of language with a focus on chunks (in the sense of prefabricated items) as extended units of meaning. To pay tribute to Sinclair's enormous impact on research in this field, the volume contains two contributions which deal explicitly with his work, including material from unpublished manuscripts. Beyond that, the articles cover different aspects of chunks ranging from more theoretically-oriented to more applied papers, in which foreign language teaching and the computational application of the insights about the nature of language provided by corpus research play an important role. The volume demonstrates the wide applicability and relevance of the notion of chunks by bringing together research from different fields of linguistics such as theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and foreign language teaching, and thus provides an interdisciplinary view on the impact of idiomaticity in language.

Practicing a native or foreign language at high proficiency level requires a complex understanding of all its figurative and idiomatic meanings. Behind these meanings lie many cultural references, inherited from the history of nations and their traditions. Finally, translation, even in the age of artificial intelligence, comes up against the obstacle of idiomaticity, which is often difficult to render in a target language. This book contains selected contributions presented at the Europhras 2021 international conference (Louvain-la-Neuve, September 6-9, 2021). They cover a wide range of scientific disciplines related to idiomaticity: in particular, the study of proverbs (paremiology), cultural and contrastive studies, translation studies, corpus-based studies, and automated methods.

Productive Patterns in Phraseology and Construction Grammar by Carmen Mellado Blanco Pdf

Adopting a corpus-based methodology, this volume analyses phraseological patterns in nine European languages from a monolingual, bilingual and multilingual point of view, following a mostly Construction Grammar approach. At present, corpus-based constructional research represents an interesting and innovative field of phraseology with great relevance to translatology, foreign language didactics and lexicography.
