Connect to Comprehension by Lynn Givens Pdf

Connect to Comprehension is a comprehensive, scripted intervention reading program for struggling readers in grades 1-8. It is effective for small group intervention as well as for one-on-one tutoring. This program was developed to provide students who struggle with decoding access to upper-level comprehension instruction. Struggling readers typically don't get practice in these comprehension skills either because the reading materials are too difficult to decode or the lower-level text they can read are not engaging and motivating. As a result, when struggling readers begin to become more fluent, they then have to conquer their gaps in comprehension, especially upper-level skills such as making inferences, determining cause and effect, comparing and contrasting. In Connect to Comprehension, these upper-levels skills are explicitly taught, scaffolded, and practiced while students are learning and practicing basic decoding/structural analysis skills.

The Comprehension Toolkit by Stephanie Harvey,Anne Goudvis Pdf

Grades 3-6 "Active literacy is the means to deeper understanding and diverse, flexible thinking, and is the hallmark of our approach to teaching and learning. Reading, writing, talking, listening, and investigating are the cornerstones of active literacy. The Toolkit captures the language of thinking we use to explicitly teach kids to comprehend the wide variety of informational text they encounter. Through the Toolkit lessons, we demonstrate how the kids adopt and adapt our teaching language as their learning language." - Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis In The Comprehension Toolkit, Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis have created an intensive curricular resource designed to help students understand, respond to, and learn from nonfiction text. By actively engaging students in reading, talking, and writing about information and ideas, The Comprehension Toolkit provides a foundation for developing independent readers and learners across the curriculum and throughout the school year. Framed around the Gradual Release of Responsibility approach, The Comprehension Toolkit provides scaffolded comprehension strategy instruction. First through modeling and guided practice, then releasing responsibility to students through collaborative practice, independent practice, and application, the Toolkit's lessons teach students to use comprehension strategies flexibly in a variety of texts, topics, and subject areas. Professional Support A series of resources introduce, support, and extend the Toolkit's core lessons. The Teacher's Guide outlines the thinking behind the Toolkit and describes its components, instructional design, and assessment options. The Resources for The Comprehension Toolkit CD-ROM provides an array of print and video resources including a photographic overview of an Active Literacy Classroom, downloadable research articles, templates, assessment masters, and full-colour lesson text. Extend and Investigate helps you extend the Toolkit's comprehension strategies across the curriculum and throughout the year. It provides strategies for content area reading and research, textbook reading, test reading, and a variety of practical bibliographies. 6 Strategy Clusters The 26 strategy lessons in The Comprehension Toolkit are organized into six Strategy Cluster books. Informational Text A series of short, engaging, real-world informational texts provide an effective context for using and practising the Toolkit's comprehension strategies. The Source Book of Short Text provides two kinds of nonfiction text: Lesson Text, 24 articles from children's magazines; and Nonfiction Short Text, 43 short informational articles specially written for the Toolkit.

Sometimes Reading is Hard by Robin Bright Pdf

When students say that reading is boring, difficult, overwhelming, or they cannot find a good book, it is almost impossible to sell them on the idea that reading is fun and worthwhile. Sometimes Reading is Hard shows teachers how to develop the skills students need to be successful and how to cultivate passionate, lifelong readers. An intriguing look at the science of reading, the book helps teachers understand the foundations upon which language and reading are learned so they can make their own good decisions about programs, resources, strategies, and activities. Classroom vignettes, promising practices, and step-by-step activities illustrate how teachers can weave teaching the skills of decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency with real reasons to read. This hands-on teacher resource shows what a comprehensive, research-based reading program looks like in action.

Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension by M. Anne Britt,Jean-François Rouet,Amanda M. Durik Pdf

Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension aims to systematically investigate how readers interpret reading tasks within a situation, and how that interpretation influences reading behavior and comprehension. Presenting a new model of REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV), the authors describe reading comprehension in terms of how a reader adopts goals within a particular situation that then guide what is read, when, and how. By applying the RESOLV model to a range of reading situations, this book provides evidence to suggest that there is no unitary understanding of a task, because individuals bring their own goals and characteristics to the situation; as such, it demonstrates the importance of understanding how a reader (e.g., student, test-taker, employee completing a work task) represents the context and the specific assignment. Written by internationally recognized learning sciences scholars, Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension advances the state of the art in reading research, but also seeks to inform a broader range of audiences, including those interested in the teaching and the assessment of reading.

The Forgiveness Garden by Lauren Thompson Pdf

A long time ago and far away--although it could be here, and it could be now--a boy threw a stone and injured a girl. For as long as anyone could remember, their families had been enemies, and their towns as well, so it was no surprise that something bad had happened. Hate had happened. Revenge had happened. And that inspired more hate and more calls for revenge. But this time, a young girl decided to try something different... Inspired by the original Garden of Forgiveness in Beirut, Lebanon, and the movement that has grown up around it, Lauren Thompson has created a timeless parable for all ages that shows readers a better way to resolve conflicts and emphasizes the importance of moving forward together.

Connecting Comprehension Strategies to the Urban Student by Annika Hardy-Douglas Pdf

Any great author knows how important it is to entice their readers as soon as possible. When we read and write the ultimate goal is to keep the attention of our audience. Skilled teachers can relate! In order to engage your students you must have a knack for stepping outside of the box. Sometimes that may require you to invest in the interests of your students, spend more time using a creative approach to introducing a targeted skill or concept, and providing an interesting background for those students that may not have the schema needed to comprehend fully. This book highlights ways that have been proven successful in my experiences working with urban students. I believe an engaging beginning is the prerequisite for great instruction.
