Cell Calcium Metabolism by Gary Fiskum Pdf

A widespread appreciation for the role that calcium plays in cell physiology and patho physiology has now been achieved due to the pioneering studies of many of the scientists who attended the VIIth International Spring Symposium on Health Sciences at George Washington University in Washington, D. C. The participants in this unique meeting rep resented diverse fields of basic and clinical research, such as molecular physiology, oncology, molecular genetics, cardiology, bioenergetics, pathology, and endocrinology. The content of the proceedings of the symposium represents work in these and other areas of biomedical research. Organization of the book is aimed at striking a balance between the biochemistry 2 and physiology of normal cell Ca + metabolism and the pathological consequences of al 2 terations in cell Ca + homeostasis. The first section of the book is devoted to the transport mechanisms responsible for 2 2 regulating intracellular Ca + and the pharmacological modalities for controlling cell Ca + . Particular attention is given to the molecular basis for plasma membrane transport activities, 2 2 including the ATP-driven Ca + pump, the Na + -Ca + exchange system, and voltage sensitive 2 Ca + channels. The second section covers the exciting relationships between phosphoinositide metab 2 olism, signal transduction, and cell Ca + metabolism. This section begins with an eloquent overview by Professor Michael Berridge, who was the keynote speaker at the symposium and the recipient of the scientific merit award.

captured for the published proceedings. Nevertheless, the two Supplements to this Journal (also available together as a hard-backed book) do, over the years, embrace many of the major aspects of the study of inborn errors of metabolism and can, particularly with the Short Communications section, be used as a way into the literature on specific new topics. We hope that with judicious selection of material these supplements will continue to provide, as did the Society's earlier annual publications, a balanced record of the present state of the subject in all its facets, a record of interest to those working in allied fields as well as to the specialist. Diastolic Relaxation of the Heart by Beverly H. Lorell,William Grossman Pdf

Numerous studies have documented the importance of diastolic dysfunction in heart disease. Now, providing cardiologists with the most current information available on the subject, the editors have pulled together contributions from an impressive array of top researchers and compiled them into one comprehensive, carefully edited source, Diastolic Relaxation of the Heart, Second Edition: The Biology of Diastole in Health and Disease. This brand new Second Edition, based on a recent meeting, includes such topics as: molecular biology of relaxation; consequences of altered gene expression; impaired relaxation in experimental models (ischemia and hypoxia, and hypertrophy and failure); diastolic dysfunction in the diseased human heart. Diastolic Relaxation of the Heart, Second Edition: The Biology of Diastole in Health and Disease, the successor to the editors' bestselling work on the same subject, published in 1987 - belongs on the shelf of every practising cardiologist. It will also be an invaluable addition to the library of scientists researching the effects of diastole on heart function.

Cardiac Muscle: The Regulation Of Excitation And Contraction by Richard Nathan Pdf

Cardiac Muscle: The Regulation of Excitation and Contraction is a 12-chapter text that covers the research studies on characterizing the ionic and molecular mechanisms that regulate excitation and contraction of cardiac muscle. This book describes first the ionic currents underlying diastolic depolarization and pacing of the heart. The discussions then shift to the mechanisms of action of calcium-channel antagonists; the regulation of calcium influx by indigenous factors, such as voltage- or calcium-mediated inactivation; the identification of fixed negative charges on the surface of the sarcolemma; and the regulation of gating and permeability of ion channels by these charges. These topics are followed by examining the molecular and ionic mechanisms that underlie the electrophysiologic actions of adrenergic and cholinergic neurotransmitters and peptide hormones. This text further explores the theoretical and experimental studies of the sodium-calcium exchange process, its stoichiometry, and how the exchanger might contribute to current flow during or after the action potential. Other chapters consider the mechanism of twitch and tonic tension regulation by cardiac glycosides and intracellular sodium and how toxic concentrations induce cardiac arrhythmias. A chapter highlights the identification of sarcolemmal binding sites for calcium, the likelihood that such binding or the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum plays a role in the regulation of contraction and the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The remaining chapters deal with the structural similarities among calcium-binding proteins of the contractile apparatus and the calcium channel, and the regulation of contraction by calcium-binding proteins. Physiologists, pathophysiologists, clinicians, researchers, and students who are interested in heart’s function will find this book invaluable.

Myocardial Ischemia by Naranjan S. Dhalla,Ian R. Innes,Robert E. Beamish Pdf

Whenever the coronary flow is inadequate to provide enough oxygen to meet the energy demands of the tissue, the heart becomes ischemic. Manifestations of myocardial ischemia include depression in contractile activity, changes in metabolic pattern, abnormalities in ultrastructure, and alterations in membrane potential. Ischemic changes during the early phase are reversible but as the period of ischemia is extended, the injury becomes irreversible. The transition from reversible to irreversible ischemic injury is usually associated with some membrane defects. It is worthwhile to consider that the irreversible damage to the ischemic myocardium occurs when the sarcolemmal membrane is altered in suoh a way that it would promote 2 a net gain of ca + in the cardiac cell upon reinstitution of blood flow. Suoh a lesion could result when mechanisms for the entry as well as removal 2 of ca + from the myocardial oell become defective. In this regard, 2 depression of the sarcolemmal ca + pump would favour the oocurrenoe of 2 intracellular ca + overload. Furthermore, inhibition of the Na+-K+ pump would lead to elevation of myoplasmic Na+ which oould then increase the 2 2 intracellular concentration of ca + through the sarcolemmal Na+-ca + exchange mechanism. In faot recent studies have revealed an inhibition of 2 the sarcolemmal Na+-ca + exchange mechanism in the ischemic heart and this 2 change could also contribute towards the occurrence of intracellular ca + 2 overload.
