Tarahumara by Bernard L. Fontana Pdf

Inhabiting the Sierra Madre Occidental of southwestern Chihuahua in Mexico, the Tarahumara (or Rar‡muri) are known in their language as the "foot runners" due to the way in which they must navigate their rugged terrain. This book offers an accessible ethnography of their history, customs, and current life, accompanied by photographs that offer striking images of these gentle people. The subtitle of the book derives from the Tarahumar's belief that the soul works at night while the body sleeps and that during this "day of the moon" both the spirits of the dead and the souls of the living move about in their mysterious ways. As the authors observe, the fact that "so many men, women, and children persist in distinctive, centuries-old cultural traditions in spite of their nearness to all the complexities and attractions of modern industrial society is an importatn part of the story." Their book tells that story and brings readers closer to understanding the Tarahumara world and way of life.

Science Communication by Sarah R. Davies,Maja Horst Pdf

This book describes current practices in science communication, from citizen science to Twitter storms, and celebrates this diversity through case studies and examples. However, the authors also reflect on how scholars and practitioners can gain better insight into science communication through new analytical methods and perspectives. From science PR to the role of embodiment and materiality, some aspects of science communication have been under-studied. How can we better notice these? Science Communication provides a new synthesis for Science Communication Studies. It uses the historical literature of the field, new empirical data, and interdisciplinary thought to argue that the frames which are typically used to think about science communication often omit important features of how it is imagined and practised. It is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners of science education, science and technology studies, museum studies, and media and communication studies.

Comparative Perspectives on Work-Life Balance and Gender Equality by Margaret O'Brien,Karin Wall Pdf

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book portrays men’s experiences of home alone leave and how it affects their lives and family gender roles in different policy contexts and explores how this unique parental leave design is implemented in these contrasting policy regimes. The book brings together three major theoretical strands: social policy, in particular the literature on comparative leave policy developments; family and gender studies, in particular the analysis of gendered divisions of work and care and recent shifts in parenting and work-family balance; critical studies of men and masculinities, with a specific focus on fathers and fathering in contemporary western societies and life-courses. Drawing on empirical data from in-depth interviews with fathers across eleven countries, the book shows that the experiences and social processes associated with fathers’ home alone leave involve a diversity of trends, revealing both innovations and absence of change, including pluralization as well as the constraining influence of policy, gender, and social context. As a theoretical and empirical book it raises important issues on modernization of the life course and the family in contemporary societies. The book will be of particular interest to scholars in comparing western societies and welfare states as well as to scholars seeking to understand changing work-life policies and family life in societies with different social and historical pathways.

The Post-Snowden Era by Kathleen Kuehn Pdf

'Surveillance is confusing. Should we give up on expecting privacy because we're all being watched, or stop worrying because it's all exaggerated? Actually, neither of those is right. A much better idea is to find a book that is sane, well researched and easy to read, so you understand, don't fear needlessly, and can do something about the things that are wrong. A book like this one.' Nicky Hager Revelations about the nature and extent of global surveillance programs have shocked many. But what are their implications in the long term – and for New Zealand? Mapping New Zealand’s role in international intelligence-gathering from the Second World War to the present day, Kathleen Kuehn asks probing questions about the behaviour of both the state and corporations in our current ‘surveillance society’. Ultimately these questions force us to confront the way we value our individual privacy and civil liberties, for – as we often hear – why should any of this matter if we have nothing to hide?
