The Dairy Farm by Archibald Leitch Pdf

Excerpt from The Dairy Farm: Dairy Cattle Methods, and Dairy Farm Management With this great advantage in economy of pro duction, it is quite easy to discern why the dairy cow tends to supplant the meat-bearing animals in regions where land is high priced and popula tion dense. She gives the greatest financial re turns from the feeds grown on the farm, and there fore enables the owner to get the necessary added returns from his high-priced land. Still easier is it to see why the dairy cow has supplanted the meat-bearing animals where land has become im poverished. Here she enables the farmer to get the greatest financial returns from what little his land does produce and at the same time returns to the soil practically all the plant food taken out by the feed she eats. One of the favorable economic features of the dairy business is the regularity and dependability of the returns. This appeals particularlv to the small farmer of limited means to whom security of returns is of more moment than the volume of profits. Moreover a development of dairying on a small farm afl'ords an opportunity of increasing the volume of business on a limited area. With the well recognized business results of larger profit; from larger business on the same plant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Farm Dairying (Classic Reprint) by Laura Rose Pdf

Excerpt from Farm Dairying In this book it has been my earnest desire and aim to present the dairy industry in a simple, practical manner, in the hope of benefiting those desirous of improving and succeeding in their chosen occupation. I have "been a-gathering this for years, a little at a time." It would be impossible for me to mention personally and to thank the many who have contributed to my store of knowledge. I am sincerely grateful to all. My happiest thought is that the knowledge I have acquired I hereby have the opportunity to give to others, that they in turn may be inspired to better work, receive more remuneration, and find a broader field of happiness in their labor. Dairy Farming Projects by C. E. Ladd Pdf

Excerpt from Dairy Farming Projects This is a hand-book for dairymen who are ambitious to increase their profits. Primarily it is intended for pupils in Smith-Hughes vocational agriculture courses who desire to enter on life careers of successful dairy fanning, or to combine dairying with growing one or more cash crops. Its author is himself known to be a successful dairy farmer. He is, also, an expert in farm management, an experienced teacher of vocational agriculture, and a successful supervisor of teaching in this field. We are now agreed that education cannot be bestowed. It must be achieved. Pupil initiative, pupil planning seasonably done and applied by local survey and job analysis methods, pupil observations and experience instantly and soundly appraiser! with a view to betterment of methods and results, preferably in connection with sizeable projects on home farms covering complete cycles of production, - these are fundamental factors in effective teaching by the project method. Accordingly, in this, as in the other books for pupils in this Project Series, there is no long pull of text that might tempt pupil or teacher aside into mere memorizing. Each section, as a rule, provides for some activity, something originated by the pupil or something given the pupil to do. Questions are raised, references are given, problems arc proposed, practicums, surveys, and contests are planned, which make it necessary for every pupil to bestir himself in order to get into his mind and his habits the substance of the course. But the treatment is intended to arouse and to develop the utmost initiative on the part of both pupil and teacher. Dairy Farming by John Prince Sheldon Pdf

Excerpt from Dairy Farming: Being the Theory, Practice, and Methods of Dairying Far more than any other breed, because the grandest and most fashionable, Shorthorns have become cosmopolitan. They are now found in every civilised portion of the world, and in some portions which can hardly be regarded as civilised. The Shorthorn seems to be the Englishman's shadow - it follows him everywhere. In all countries, if properly cared for, Shorthorns are found to do well. Other breeds, notably the Herefords, have been introduced and extensively bred in other countries, and they too are found to prosper, without such minute care, under the new conditions; while their distinguishing characteristics, being to all intents and purposes stamped with the principle of permanence, so far as such matters can become permanent, do not change in any marked degree. Yet it is probable that foreign soils and climates will modify them somewhat in course of time. Not the least of the merits which English breeds of cattle carry with them to foreign countries is their prepotency - their ability to stamp in a marked manner their own qualities on the offspring of any of the native breeds With which they are intercrossed in such foreign countries; and in this way they are modifying the cattle of the rest of the world in a degree analogous to that in which Englishmen are modifying its manners and institutions. Milch Cows and Dairy Farming by Charles L. Flint Pdf

Excerpt from Milch Cows and Dairy Farming: Comprising the Breeds, Breeding, and Management in Health and Disease, of Dairy and Other Stock This work is designed to embody the most recent information on the subject of dairy farming. My aim has been to make a practically useful book. With this view, I have treated of the several breeds of stock, the diseases to which they are subject, the established principles of breeding, the feeding and management of milch cows, the raising of calves intended for the dairy, and the culture of grasses and plants to be used as fodder. For the chapter on the diseases of stock, I am largely indebted to Dr. C. M. Wood, Professor of the Theory and Practice of Veterinary Medicine, and to Dr. Geo. H. Dadd, Professor of Anatomy and Physiology, both of the Boston Veterinary Institute. If this chapter contributes anything to promote a more humane and judicious treatment of cattle when suffering from dis ease, I shall feel amply repaid for the labor bestowed upon the whole work. The chapter on the Dutch dairy, which I have trans lated from the German, will be found to be of great practical value, as suggesting much that is applicable to our American dairies. This chapter has never before, to my knowledge, appeared in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Profitable Dairying by Charles Leroy Peck Pdf

Excerpt from Profitable Dairying: A Practical Guide to Successful Dairy The last two decades have witnessed greater changes and more material improvements than any previous century. When these improvements will have so far progressed as to render further change unnecessary no man can predict. Manufacturers to day are compelled to recognize these changes in their business and adjust the cost of production so as to meet the changed conditions, or they must go out of business. The farmer is now buying for forty-five dollars a better mowing machine than could be put on the market thirty-five years ago for one hundred dol lars. These remarkable changes are common to nearly all industries. The time is comparatively recent when farming was regarded as a business requiring little or no previous preparation to be successfully conducted, and was followed by a class of men who considered themselves qualified for nothing else and who selected it as a business more from necessity than from choice. In fact, in many localities this idea still prevails. The young man who thought he had. A gift for me chanics, or a capacity for mastering some one of the professions, considered himself fortunate in not being obliged to live on the farm. Dairying by John Prince Sheldon Pdf

Excerpt from Dairying: A Book for All Who Are Engaged in the Production Management of Milk Dairying as an art and an industry - at once the largest and most important of our agricultural interests - has been for a third of a century providing us with what may, not inaptly, be termed a transformation scene in respect alike to its industrial and scientific features. To those of us who were familiar with it as a business half a century ago, the striking changes which have occurred since are plain to all as if delineated on a coloured map hanging on a wall. These modifications and adaptations - at once fundamental as to principle and structural as to practice - lie before us in memory as if in a book that might have been written at leisure during the last forty years, more or less. Coming change was in the air of the dairy almost everywhere in the 'sixties of the nineteenth century, but less so, perhaps, in this country than in some European continental countries - from Switzerland to Sweden - and in the United States of America, and also in the Dominion of Canada. So far as England was especially concerned, the keen and sharpening competition of American cheese was causing something more than mere alarm - something, indeed, approaching consternation - amongst British dairy farmers, inside whose cheese-kettles the rents were chiefly made. In those days there was no outlet for milk but the conversion of it into cheese and butter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
