The Farm and the Dairy (Classic Reprint) by J. P. Sheldon Pdf

Excerpt from The Farm and the Dairy Herewith is given, as far as space has permitted, the substance of lectures delivered during the last ten years at the College of Agriculture, Downton. I desire in the preface to remind the public of the great and unique services rendered to British Dairy Farming by the late H. M. Jenkins, many years the able and indefatigable Secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society, whose lucid expositions of the dairy practices of several Continental countries have added so much to our knowledge of what other people are doing, and Whose life-work ended far too early in the grave. The Dairy Farm by Archibald Leitch Pdf

Excerpt from The Dairy Farm: Dairy Cattle Methods, and Dairy Farm Management With this great advantage in economy of pro duction, it is quite easy to discern why the dairy cow tends to supplant the meat-bearing animals in regions where land is high priced and popula tion dense. She gives the greatest financial re turns from the feeds grown on the farm, and there fore enables the owner to get the necessary added returns from his high-priced land. Still easier is it to see why the dairy cow has supplanted the meat-bearing animals where land has become im poverished. Here she enables the farmer to get the greatest financial returns from what little his land does produce and at the same time returns to the soil practically all the plant food taken out by the feed she eats. One of the favorable economic features of the dairy business is the regularity and dependability of the returns. This appeals particularlv to the small farmer of limited means to whom security of returns is of more moment than the volume of profits. Moreover a development of dairying on a small farm afl'ords an opportunity of increasing the volume of business on a limited area. With the well recognized business results of larger profit; from larger business on the same plant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. British Colonial Dairying by G. Sutherland Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from British Colonial Dairying: For School, Farm, and Factory The author of British and Colonial Dairying set himself a somewhat difficult task when he planned to write a book on the subject of dairying that would be equally acceptable and useful in different parts of the Empire. It is true that the principles which apply in the production of milk and in the manufacture of dairy products are the same everywhere, but there are important differences in the methods which are followed in Australasia as compared with the mother country, and it is often difficult to persuade the average dairyman to distinguish between the underlying principles and those things which relate merely to the practice of his art. Having had some personal experience in dairy ing operations in the different countries included in the term British and Colonial, I am ready to say that the author has succeeded admirably in the object which he had in View. The science of dairying is of very recent origin compared with the antiquity of the art, and it is the business of the dairy teacher or writer to apply the lessons of science to everyday practical work. The Business of Dairying How to Conduct Dairy Farming, for the Largest Profit (Classic Reprint) by Clarence B. Lane Pdf

Excerpt from The Business of Dairying How to Conduct Dairy Farming, for the Largest Profit IN these days of sharp competition, it is necessary for the dairy farmer to make a close study of his business if he is to succeed. Like the manufacturer, he must know exactly what his products cost him and determine the sources of his profits and losses. In fact, he should make a business proposii tion of the whole farm. We can point to one here and there who has followed this plari with wonder ful success, but the condition of the dairy industry, as seen on the average farm, points to the need of better methods and a more definite knowledge of the business. In no department connected with the farm is there more need for absolute data than in the dairy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dairy Farming by John Prince Sheldon Pdf

Excerpt from Dairy Farming: Being the Theory, Practice, and Methods of Dairying Far more than any other breed, because the grandest and most fashionable, Shorthorns have become cosmopolitan. They are now found in every civilised portion of the world, and in some portions which can hardly be regarded as civilised. The Shorthorn seems to be the Englishman's shadow - it follows him everywhere. In all countries, if properly cared for, Shorthorns are found to do well. Other breeds, notably the Herefords, have been introduced and extensively bred in other countries, and they too are found to prosper, without such minute care, under the new conditions; while their distinguishing characteristics, being to all intents and purposes stamped with the principle of permanence, so far as such matters can become permanent, do not change in any marked degree. Yet it is probable that foreign soils and climates will modify them somewhat in course of time. Not the least of the merits which English breeds of cattle carry with them to foreign countries is their prepotency - their ability to stamp in a marked manner their own qualities on the offspring of any of the native breeds With which they are intercrossed in such foreign countries; and in this way they are modifying the cattle of the rest of the world in a degree analogous to that in which Englishmen are modifying its manners and institutions. British Dairying by John Prince Sheldon Pdf

Excerpt from British Dairying: A Handy Volume on the Work of the Dairy Farm for the Use of Technical Instruction Classes, Students in Agricultural Colleges, and Dairy Farmers I have for some time had the satisfaction of seeing the greatly awakened interest which is taken therein now, as compared with a quarter of a century ago, and of knowing that a very substantial measure of progress in dairy reform has been attained. At the same time I am aware that much remains to be done before we have reached the degree of perfection which we may fairly hope to attain, and that the need of tuition will be perennial so long as dairying remains an industry of man. Profitable Dairying by G. H. Benkendorf Pdf

Excerpt from Profitable Dairying: A Manual for Farmers and Dairymen There is no branch of agriculture which yields so handsome and so satisfactory returns to the farmer as the dairy industry, if properly pursued. To be sure, there are other branches which give larger returns, but these large profits are more than offset by the loss to the soil and the uncertainty of a crop each year. Tobacco may be grown successfully for a number of years on the same piece of ground, but the soil must be diligently worked and extensively fertilized. In the end the overtaxed soil refuses to respond and finally lies exhausted. So it is with grain farming. One cannot draw continually on a bank account without renewing his deposits there. Neither can the farmer draw continually from the storehouse of plant food which he possesses; that is, from the soil of his farm, without putting back the same amount of fertility that he takes off with his crop, unless he wishes to wear out and ruin his farm. Canadian Dairying (Classic Reprint) by Henry H. Dean Pdf

Excerpt from Canadian Dairying The wonderful growth of dairying in ganada dur ing the past ten years made it seem advisable for the Author to prepare a simple work on dairying, which would be helpful in the class-room and 5150 be beneficial to all classes of dairymen. The book con tains chiefly the experience of the writer, gathered during the past fifteen years as Professor of Dairy Husbandry in the Ontario Agricultural College. He has in addition to his own experience imbibed much dairy knowledge, which he has taken neither the time'nor space to acknowledge. In many cases he could not do so, if he would, as the source of inform ation has been crowded from his memory - the fact only remaining.
