Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases: in memoriam Detlef Zillikens by Ralf J. Ludwig ,Frédéric Caux ,Christian David Sadik ,Enno Schmidt,Dedee Murrell,Takashi Hashimoto,Aimee S. Payne Pdf

Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases are a heterogenous group of autoimmune blistering disorders (AIBD) characterized by tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies against structural proteins of the desmosome and basement membrane zone of the skin and orifice-close mucosal tissues. While strong evidence has been provided that autoantibodies in AIBD are pathogenic, the exact mechanisms of how blister formation is mediated is very different between pemphigus and pemphigoid disorders and yet incompletely understood. Additionally, target antigens for the major AIBDs have already been identified on the molecular level. In contrast, diagnostic assays are not yet available for all autoantibody specificities and isotypes. Treatment also greatly relies on long-term unspecific immunosuppressants, although rituximab has greatly improved the outcome for patients with moderate and severe pemphigus. There is currently still a need to identify key pathophysiological mediators and pathways for the development of more specific, safer, and more effective treatment options. This Research Topic will honor the work of the late Detlef Zillikens, who has dedicated over 30 years to the field of AIBD and has authored more than 600 articles. We strongly encourage the submission of articles from colleagues and researchers who have collaborated with Prof. Zillikens in the past, however, we will also consider manuscripts from other authors. We would particularly like articles to cite Prof. Zillikens work wherever it is appropriate. We welcome the submission of original research and review articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following sub-topics: • autoantibody specificities • diagnostic assays • in vitro or in vivo studies about the effect of autoantibodies and their modulation • epidemiology and treatment of AIBD Reports of individual cases are discouraged Dr. Enno Schmidt receives grant funding from Euroimmun, Incyte, Dompe, Admirx, Synthon/biondis, Bayer, Pharmix, Alpine Immune, AstraZeneca, Sanofi, ArgenX, UCB, Novartis, Biotest, Fresenius Medical Care, and is consulting for Roche, Imevax, Thermo Fisher, Janssen, Topas, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Almirall, and Chugai. Biomarkers in Breast Cancer by Giampietro Gasparini,Daniel F. Hayes Pdf

Expert laboratory and clinical researchers from around the world review how to design and evaluate studies of tumor markers and examine their use in breast cancer patients. The authors cover both the major advances in sophisticated molecular methods and the state-of-the-art in conventional prognostic and predictive indicators. Among the topics discussed are the relevance of rigorous study design and guidelines for the validation studies of new biomarkers, gene expression profiling by tissue microarrays, adjuvant systemic therapy, and the use of estrogen, progesterone, and epidermal growth factor receptors as both prognostic and predictive indicators. Highlights include the evaluation of HER2 and EGFR family members, of p53, and of UPA/PAI-1; the detection of rare cells in blood and marrow; and the detection and analysis of soluble, circulating markers.

The Basics of Cancer Immunotherapy by Haidong Dong,Svetomir N. Markovic Pdf

This book provides patients and their physicians (especially “non-oncologist” health care providers) with a clear and concise introduction to cancer immunotherapy, which, unlike traditional forms of cancer therapy, acts by boosting the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. The unique features of cancer immunotherapy make its management, monitoring and side-effects different from those of traditional cancer therapy. Especially novel are the side effects of cancer immunotherapy, necessitating greater awareness for both patients and physicians in order to minimize complications of therapy. The patient-friendly, concise, easy-to-understand, and up-to-date knowledge presented in this book will inform patients about the benefits and risks of cancer immunotherapy, and help them and their care providers to understand how immunotherapy would control their unique disease. Researchers and academic professionals in the field of cancer immunotherapy will also find clear and useful information to help them communicate with patients or address unresolved problems. Some key features of the book are: Expertise. All editors and authors are scientists and oncologists specializing in cancer immunotherapy, and are involved in scientific discovery from the early stage of immune-checkpoint inhibitors to today’s daily patient care. Their insights, expertise and experience guarantee the high quality and authority in the science, medicine and practice of cancer immunotherapy. Patient-friendly. This book is written for cancer patients in order to meet their needs when considering immunotherapy. As an educational tool, this book will help the reader balance the risks and benefits based on both science and clinical facts, and therefore to make the best choice in receiving or withdrawing from immunotherapy. Disease Specificity. Cancer is a complicated disease involving multiple stages and pathology. Its response to immunotherapy is individualized and varies depending on cancer types. The authors’ expertise in treating different types of cancers, including melanoma, lung, kidney, bladder, and lymphoma, provides disease-specific insights in applying immunotherapy to each disease.

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), also termed poly (ADP-ribose) synthetase (PARS) is a nuclear enzyme with a wide range of functions, including regulation of DNA repair, cell differentiation, and gene expression. More than a decade after the identification of PARP-like enzymatic activities in mammalian cells, a novel role was proposed for this e
