Designing Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion and Post-Lithium Batteries by Władysław Wieczorek,Janusz Płocharski Pdf

Every electrochemical source of electric current is composed of two electrodes with an electrolyte in between. Since storage capacity depends predominantly on the composition and design of the electrodes, most research and development efforts have been focused on them. Considerably less attention has been paid to the electrolyte, a battery’s basic component. This book fills this gap and shines more light on the role of electrolytes in modern batteries. Today, limitations in lithium-ion batteries result from non-optimal properties of commercial electrolytes as well as scientific and engineering challenges related to novel electrolytes for improved lithium-ion as well as future post-lithium batteries.

Explains the current state of the science and points the way to technological advances First developed in the late 1980s, lithium-ion batteries now power everything from tablet computers to power tools to electric cars. Despite tremendous progress in the last two decades in the engineering and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, they are currently unable to meet the energy and power demands of many new and emerging devices. This book sets the stage for the development of a new generation of higher-energy density, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries by advancing battery chemistry and identifying new electrode and electrolyte materials. The first chapter of Lithium Batteries sets the foundation for the rest of the book with a brief account of the history of lithium-ion battery development. Next, the book covers such topics as: Advanced organic and ionic liquid electrolytes for battery applications Advanced cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries Metal fluorosulphates capable of doubling the energy density of lithium-ion batteries Efforts to develop lithium-air batteries Alternative anode rechargeable batteries such as magnesium and sodium anode systems Each of the sixteen chapters has been contributed by one or more leading experts in electrochemistry and lithium battery technology. Their contributions are based on the latest published findings as well as their own firsthand laboratory experience. Figures throughout the book help readers understand the concepts underlying the latest efforts to advance the science of batteries and develop new materials. Readers will also find a bibliography at the end of each chapter to facilitate further research into individual topics. Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: Materials, Challenges, and Applications presents the advantages of lithium-sulfur batteries, such as high theoretical capacity, low cost, and stability, while also addressing some of the existing challenges. Some of the challenges are low electrical conductivity, the possible reaction of sulfur with lithium to form a soluble lithium salt, the formation of the dendrimer, large volume variation of cathode materials during the electrochemical reaction, and shuttle behavior of highly soluble intermediate polysulfides in the electrolyte. This book provides some possible solutions to these issues through novel architecture, using composite materials, doping to improve low conductivity, etc., as well as emphasizing novel materials, architectural concepts, and methods to improve the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. Covers the state-of-the-art progress on materials, technology, and challenges for lithium-sulfur batteries Presents novel synthetic approaches, characterizations, and applications of nanostructured and 2D nanomaterials for energy applications Provides fundamentals of electrochemical behavior and their understanding at nanoscale for emerging applications in lithium-sulfur batteries

Rational Design of Nanostructured Polymer Electrolytes and Solid–Liquid Interphases for Lithium Batteries by Snehashis Choudhury Pdf

This thesis makes significant advances in the design of electrolytes and interfaces in electrochemical cells that utilize reactive metals as anodes. Such cells are of contemporary interest because they offer substantially higher charge storage capacity than state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology. Batteries based on metallic anodes are currently considered impractical and unsafe because recharge of the anode causes physical and chemical instabilities that produce dendritic deposition of the metal leading to catastrophic failure via thermal runaway. This thesis utilizes a combination of chemical synthesis, physical & electrochemical analysis, and materials theory to investigate structure, ion transport properties, and electrochemical behaviors of hybrid electrolytes and interfacial phases designed to prevent such instabilities. In particular, it demonstrates that relatively low-modulus electrolytes composed of cross-linked networks of polymer-grafted nanoparticles stabilize electrodeposition of reactive metals by multiple processes, including screening electrode electrolyte interactions at electrochemical interfaces and by regulating ion transport in tortuous nanopores. This discovery is significant because it overturns a longstanding perception in the field of nanoparticle-polymer hybrid electrolytes that only solid electrolytes with mechanical modulus higher than that of the metal electrode are able to stabilize electrodeposition of reactive metals.

Electrolytes, Interfaces and Interphases by Kang Xu Pdf

Electrolytes are indispensable components in electrochemistry and the fast-growing electrochemical energy storage markets. Research in electrolytes has witnessed exponential growth in recent years, accompanied by their applications in the most popular electrochemical cell ever invented, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In myriads of LIBs, electrolytes and their interphases determine how high the voltage of a battery is, how many times it can be charged/discharged, or how rapid the energy stored therein could be released. The conquest of further technical challenges around safety, life and cost-effectiveness of lithium-based or beyond-lithium batteries requires in-depth understanding of electrolytes and interphases. This will be the authoritative textbook for those entering the field. Chapters will establish the fundamental principles for the field, before moving onto important knowledge acquired in recent years. There will be special emphasis on linking these fundamentals to real-world problems encountered in devices, especially lithium-ion batteries. The book will be suitable for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in electrochemical energy storage, electrochemistry, materials science and engineering, as well as researchers new to the subject.

Water in Lithium-Ion Batteries by Futoshi Matsumoto,Takao Gunji Pdf

This book reviews the impact of water content in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as well as the reactivity of anodes, cathodes and electrolytes with water and processes that provide water-resistance to materials in LIBs. Water in LIBs which were constructed with anode, cathode and organic electrolyte containing lithium salts can degrade the cell performance and seriously damage the materials present. However, because a small amount of water in cells contributes to the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase, complete removal of water from cells lowers the battery performance and increases costs due to removal of water from the battery materials. This book presents the optimal concentration of water for each battery material along with appropriate removal methods and water-scavengers which were developed recently to establish both high performance and lower costs. Moreover this book describes the development of anodes and cathodes prepared by aqueous process and aqueous LIBs in which aqueous electrolytes containing lithium salts are used as an electrolyte. This book will be useful not only for academic researchers but also for company researchers who deal with LIBs.
