The Readiness of MSMEs in Facing ASEAN Economic Community 2015 by Tulus Tambunan Pdf

From a worldwide perspective, it has been recognized that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in economic development, as they have been the primary sources of job/employment creation and output growth. Even now it is generally believed that sustainable and inclusive economic development in developing regions (i.e. Asia, Africa and Latin America) depends to a large extent on the vibrant private sector, in particular MSMEs. This book is about MSMEs in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), providing most recent evidence on development and performance of the enterprises in individual member states (i.e. Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Kambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam). Historically, MSMEs have always been the main players in domestic economic activities in the region. In all member states, the enterprises made up more than 90 percent of all enterprises, total employment, and even in some member states the enterprises contributed more than 50 per cent to their gross domestic products (GDP). Currently, one important issue regarding the development of MSMEs, not only in ASEAN but also in other developing regions in the world, is about the long run prospect of their existence or development in the course of increasing pressures of world trade liberalisation and economic globalisation. This book tries to answer the key question that currently is still under both academic and public debates, namely can MSMEs, especially micro enterprises, survive in the long-run in course of increasing competition pressures in both domestic and regional/international markets? The question is particular important for MSMEs in ASEAN as it is going to implement fully liberalisation in trade and investment in 2015, known as ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. Despite the fact that the above mentioned issue is increasingly important, unfortunately, not so many books have been published so far that touches this particular issue. Therefore, this book is to fill this gap.

SMEs in Developing Asia by Paul Vandenberg,Pornpinun Chantapacdepong,Naoyuki Yoshino Pdf

A vibrant stratum of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is critical for the growth and development of Asian economies. These enterprises generate employment, contribute to investment, participate in value chains, and support innovation. SMEs that seek to sustain and grow their operations, however, face a variety of constraints, many of which are directly related to size. These so-called "size-induced market failures" create a role for public policy interventions by governments throughout the region. This book focuses on the market failures encountered by enterprises in the key areas of technology and innovation, credit and finance, education and skills, and market access. Obstacles to participation in the rapidly expanding regional and global value chains are also examined. Among a variety of issues, the book explores the "missing middle" in credit facilities for enterprises that are beyond microcredit but not yet able to secure regular loans from banks. The book investigates the barriers to innovation and how best to combine internal and external research and development. It also looks at the hiring versus training options to build human capital. The various chapter authors examine national and multicountry experiences in South and East Asia, ranging from those in Pakistan to Japan.

Sustainable Waste Management Challenges in Developing Countries by Pariatamby, Agamuthu,Shahul Hamid, Fauziah,Bhatti, Mehran Sanam Pdf

As global waste generation increases at a rapid rate, there is a dire need for waste management practices such as collection, disposal, and recycling to protect from environmental pollution. However, developing countries generate two to three times more waste, resort to open dumps more often than developed countries, and are slower to integrate waste management standards. There is a need for studies that examine the waste generation and practices of countries that share similar economic backgrounds as they strive to implement successful waste management techniques. Sustainable Waste Management Challenges in Developing Countries is an essential reference source that discusses the challenges and strategies of waste management practices and the unique waste issues faced by developing countries that prevent them from achieving the goal of integrated waste management. While highlighting topics including e-waste, transboundary movement, and consumption patterns, this book is ideally designed for policymakers, legislators, waste company managers, environmentalists, students, academicians, and municipal planners seeking current research on the global waste management problem.

The Global Findex Database 2017 by Asli Demirguc-Kunt,Leora Klapper,Dorothe Singer,Saniya Ansar Pdf

In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Workers, Managers, Productivity by Akio Hosono,John Page,Go Shimada Pdf

This open access book provides a glimpse into the Japanese management technique known as “Kaizen,” and the ways it has been disseminated around the developing world. The novelty of this book is three-fold: it provides a contextualized view of the mechanisms of initiatives implementing Kaizen in developing countries; compared with productivity studies, it places the relationship between workers and managers at the center of inquiry, reflecting the intent of SDG8 concerning decent work and economic growth; and it provides an overview of the heterogeneity of Kaizen in terms of geography and firm size. This book explores how improving management techniques can support firms’ productivity and quality. Given its wide range of case studies from across Africa, Asia and Latin America, this book will be of value to scholars, policymakers and advocates of sustainable development alike.
