Research on Early Developmental Care for Preterm Neonates by Jacques Sizun,Joy Browne Pdf

Increase in survival for very low birth weight infants has been observed, due to various improvements in perinatal care. However neurodevelopmental outcome remains a major issue. The effect of early environmental factors (during the hospital stay) and routine NICU practices on neurobehavioral development is discussed. Developmental care is an association of environmental and behavioural strategies designed to decrease the stress of preterm neonates. These interventions can be used alone or in association into more complex programs as the Neonatal Individualised Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP). Despite growing scientific literature, the medical impact of developmental care is still controversial. Major differences in medical and nursing practices are observed. This book reviews the theoretical framework underlying developmental care and the research-based data in different fields: neuroscience, developmental psychology, medicine and nursing. Reflections on the impact on staff are included. Recommendations for new research programs on this important aspect of neonatal care are proposed.

Developmental Care of the Premature Baby by Jeanine Young Pdf

Although advances in the technical care of neonates have enabled smaller premature babies to survive, neurodevelopmental sequelae continue to be a major source of morbidity partly due to the stressful environment of the intensive care unit. Using a neurodevelopmental systems framework, this book critically analyses the recent literature on developments in supportive care for preterm babies, and identifies nursing care issues including handling, massage, positioning, noise and lighting - all of which have been shown to affect development. The book also provides a developmental care protocol for nursing preterm infants from which individualized care plans be developed in response to behavioural cues, response to environmental stimuli, and caregiving interventions.

Nurturing the Premature Infant by Edward Goldson Pdf

Traditionally, non-medical, developmental intervention with premature infants has been a controversial topic in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). However, a small but growing band of researchers have been pushing for the acceptance of alternative interventions, such as kangaroo care and massage therapy, that do not resort to surgical or other medical practices. Edward Goldson, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital in Colorado, has assembled the top researchers in the field to contribute to this comprehensive volume that deals with non-medical intervention with premature infants. Nurturing the Premature Infant is the first to combine the innovative research in this growing area and present it in a single volume. Not only will it be indispensable to professionals in the field, but it will also be of interest to parents of premature infants.

Preterm Birth by Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Understanding Premature Birth and Assuring Healthy Outcomes Pdf

The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.

Primary Care of the Premature Infant by Dara Brodsky,Mary Ann Ouellette Pdf

Our understanding of the management of diseases in the premature infant has changed dramatically in recent years, and it can be quite difficult to remain up-to-date on changes in this highly scientific field. Dr. Brodsky and Ms. Ouellette have worked together to create a comprehensive reference that covers both the pathophysiology and epidemiology of problems occurring in premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the management of these problems once the infant has been released from the NICU to a community practice. The book emphasizes specific diseases that affect premature infants and focuses on two primary categories: background and management in the NICU, and management of specific illnesses after discharge from the NICU. Find information quickly using an up-to-date summary of the problems that are likely to affect the premature infant.Review helpful guidelines on feeding and growth, neurologic outcomes, developmental problems, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and much more. Use easy-to-follow management algorithms to help diagnose and manage common issues in premature infants after discharge.Make effective decisions about screening, immunizations, counseling of parents, and more..Help families deal with the emotional impact of caring for a premature infant..Access a list of disease-specific websites for clinicians and families.
