Vintage St. John by Valerie Sims Pdf

Get ready to be transported back to a nostalgic time in St. John's history when survival meant clearing the land for cattle pastures, cultivating the soil and fishing...all the feed one's family. Seven generations of heartfelt stories of love and loss abound in this family memoir about the US Virgin Islands. Rich in history and heritage, the author shares some of the most memorable stories that have been handed down in her family from generation to generation. "When a prominent St. Thomas merchant accumulates 2,500 acres on the island of St. John to raise cattle and cultivate bay leaves, he has no idea that his generation will be the last to farm the land. During the 1920s to the 1950s, Herman O. Creque's hard work pays off on his estates of Annaberg, Mary's Point, and Lamesure, but at the peak of their profitability, he dies, leaving them all to his wife, Emily. Francis Bay is their children's favorite with almost thirty years of summer memories, fishing, hunting, and crabbing. One day, the beach and summer cottage will be theirs, or so they believe. When two conservationists from the United States, Laurance Rockefeller, and Frank Stick visit the island in 1952, they find the unspoiled nature of Emily's lands enchanting and "wish to preserve them for the enjoyment of the nation." Little do Emily's children suspect that life as they know it is about to change forever, and the unthinkable will tear their family apart. Vintage St. John is a collection of their heartfelt memories woven together from personal interviews. They paint a vivid picture of life before the establishment of the Virgin Islands National Park... and life shortly after." * This memoir Includes a brief history of the Creque Marine Railway on Hassel Island, the ownership of the island of Mingo Cay, Jeffrey Epstein's Little St. James Island, Norman Island and 140 acres of Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands. * Other stories include: Vacationing in Cruz Bay 1955, Memories of working at Caneel Bay 1983, Cultivating onions at Cinnamon Bay 1903, Growing bay leaves at Lamesure Estate for the Bay Rum Industry and the raising of livestock with a new type that originated in St. Croix, called Senepol cattle 1930s. British Virgin Islands by James Baker Pdf

British Virgin Islands. Tour Guide. Tortola Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke. The Virgin Islands, commonly referred to as the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago; the remaining islands constitute the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. The official name of the Territory is still simply the "Virgin Islands", but the prefix "British" is often used to distinguish it from the neighbouring American territory which changed its name from the "Danish West Indies" to "Virgin Islands of the United States" in 1917. British Virgin Islands government publications continue to begin with the name "The Territory of the Virgin Islands", and the Territory's passports simply refer to the "Virgin Islands", and all laws begin with the words "Virgin Islands". Moreover, the Territory's Constitutional Commission has expressed the view that "every effort should be made", to encourage the use of the name "Virgin Islands".The Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty other smaller islands and cays. About 15 of the islands are inhabited. The capital, Road Town, is situated on Tortola, the largest island, which is approximately 20 km (12 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide. The islands have a population of about 27,800, of whom approximately 23,000 live on Tortola.

Take Me to My Paradise by Colleen Ballerino Cohen Pdf

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) markets itself to international visitors as a paradise. But just whose paradise is it? Colleen Ballerino Cohen looks at the many players in the BVI tourism culture, from the tourists who leave their graffiti at beach bars that are popularized in song, to the waiters who serve them and the singers who entertain them. Interweaving more than twenty years of field notes, Cohen provides a firsthand analysis of how tourism transformed the BVI from a small neglected British colony to a modern nation that competes in a global economic market. With its close reading of everything from advertisements to political manifestos and constitutional reforms, Take Me to My Paradise deepens our understanding of how nationalism develops hand-in-hand with tourism, and documents the uneven impact of economic prosperity upon different populations. We hear multiple voices, including immigrants working in a tourism economy, nationalists struggling to maintain some control, and the anthropologist trying to make sense of it all. The result is a richly detailed and accessible ethnography on the impact of tourism on a country that came into being as a tourist destination.

Virgin Islands by Quincy F. Lettsome, PhD Pdf

The names Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands indeed do require some clarifications. The former is the original name given to the entire Archipelago by Christopher Columbus at the time of his historic landfall in 1493. However, the qualifying word British, which is added to Virgin Islands, could be viewed as an adaptation mainly to differentiate between the British Virgin Islands and United States Virgin Islands. In official and constitutional references, the term Virgin Islands is utilized exclusively. However, in other contexts, the terms British Virgin Islands and Virgin Islands are used interchangeably. The explanation of these differences should suffice at this stage. For further and more detailed information, each name should be reviewed under its particular alphabetical placement. The text is arranged generally in direct alphabetical order. The various alphabetical entries deal with a variety of information, except two categories, which are integral parts of the Culture and Heritage of the Virgin Islands. These are August Festival Celebrations and also Boatbuilding and Sailing Legacies. The direct alphabetical arrangement will facilitate the utilization of the text.
