Dog Mom by Isabel Serna Pdf

A very different breed from a crazy cat lady, but with all the eccentricities the name connotes, a dog mom is proud, loving, totally obsessed, and always willing to do anything for that perfect creature in her care—her dog. And there are millions of them out there, especially on Instagram, sharing the love with the hashtag #dogmom. A perfect gift just for them is Dog Mom, the little book that gets it. Beautifully illustrated in a bright, vibrant, and emotionally rich way by Isabel Serna, who clearly knows the unique bond between woman and dog, this is a joyful celebration of the dog mom lifestyle: how she spells out “W-A-L-K” so as not to excite her pet; how she plans her pup’s Halloween costume months in advance; different petting techniques and how they work—all in the name of giving her dog the love and life it deserves.

The Joy Boy’S Daughter by Edie Lynch Pdf

From the time she was a little girl, Edie Lynch has been listening to family stories, starting with her beloved grandmother Josie, where they sat together on an old swing couch on Josies front porch and Edie learned that Josie was the daughter of a white doctor and her beautiful and ambitious slave mother, Missy. The doctor came to the plantation one day where Josie and her mother were laboring in the cotton fields of Alabama and he leaned down from his big black horse and handed Josie a pair of little red shoes, declaring that the shoes were from her Pa. The doctor and Missys child, Josie, met for the first time that fateful day and they never saw each other again. Edie was troubled and fascinated with Josies story and began documenting it as well as the story of her own father, known as the Joy Boy. The Joy Boy was a well-known club owner whose neon lit night spot drew the likes of Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Benny Goodman, Nat King Cole, and Count Basie. Edie went on to marry a charismatic man, like her own father, and to put her husband through medical school, she became Pennsylvanias first black model, doing fashion shoots and television commercials before earning two Master Degrees in International Affairs and Media Studies at The New School. Edie shares riveting life lessons she learned when her husband deserted the family, her son became ill, and the painful search for her missing, lost grandson. Both Edies son and daughter would make a mark for themselves in the Arts, the son as a world class composer, and the daughter as a Marketing Director for top music stars. Edie s memoir traces the colorful life she has lived as a film director, model, jeweler, and photographer, and the life she values the most, teaching homeless and poor children living in tough inner city neighborhoods the solace that comes from practicing the Creative Arts. Edies memoir spans six generations and shows her gifts as a natural storyteller.

Dog's Best Friend? by John Sorenson,Atsuko Matsuoka Pdf

In almost 40 per cent of households in North America, dogs are kept as companion animals. Dogs may be man's best friends, but what are humans to dogs? If these animals' loyalty and unconditional love have won our hearts, why do we so often view closely related wild canids, such as foxes, wolves, and coyotes, as pests, predatory killers, and demons? Re-examining the complexity and contradictions of human attitudes towards these animals, Dog's Best Friend? looks at how our relationships with canids have shaped and also been transformed by different political and economic contexts. Journeying from ancient Greek and Roman societies to Japan's Edo period to eighteenth-century England, essays explore how dogs are welcomed as family, consumed in Asian food markets, and used in Western laboratories. Contributors provide glimpses of the lives of street dogs and humans in Bali, India, Taiwan, and Turkey and illuminate historical and current interactions in Western societies. The book delves into the fantasies and fears that play out in stereotypes of coyotes and wolves, while also acknowledging that events such as the Wolf Howl in Canada's Algonquin Park indicate the emergence of new popular perspectives on canids. Questioning where canids belong, how they should be treated, and what rights they should have, Dog's Best Friend? reconsiders the concept of justice and whether it can be extended beyond the limit of the human species.

Animals in the Fiction of Cormac McCarthy by Wallis R. Sanborn, III Pdf

The works of Cormac McCarthy have been critically studied as literature of the South and of the Border Southwest. Largely ignored is the omnipresence and presentation of animals in McCarthy's works. Yet the abundant representations of animals depict a part of the ceaseless battle for survival that is inherent in many of his writings. McCarthy's animals exist within the framework of a fictional natural world driven by biological determinism: Wild animals prey upon feral and domestic animals, horses exist as warriors, and the hunt is a ballet between man and hunting hound. Proximity to humans results in mistreatment and death, while distance results in survival and fitness. McCarthy also utilizes animals as harbingers of specific events; for example, hogs are so frequently a precursor of human death that McCarthy's narrators and characters wonder whether hogs are joined to the devil for evil purposes. The first chapter here examines animal presentations in The Stonemason, The Gardener's Son and two short stories, "Bounty" and "The Dark Waters." The following nine chapters focus on one text, one type of animal--feline, swine, bovine, bird and bat, canine, equine, lupine, and hound--and one particular thesis. Each chapter also briefly examines the specific animal as it exists in other McCarthy works.

I first met Faby in the summer of 2000. On line. I was having a very bad day, just taking a break, checking my e-mail, and this little window popped up, saying “hello” My first response was, “who are you and what do you want?” She said her name was Fabiola, but her friends call her Ann, and she just wants a friend. It took us five years of talking on line before I went down there to see her. We talked on yahoo quick chat for the longest time. After spending one week with her, I could not stand being with out her. I returned to Lima, Peru, South America in Jan. of 2006. I love my wife very much.
