The Ministry of Truth by Dorian Lynskey Pdf

"Rich and compelling. . .Lynskey’s account of the reach of 1984 is revelatory.” --George Packer, The Atlantic An authoritative, wide-ranging, and incredibly timely history of 1984--its literary sources, its composition by Orwell, its deep and lasting effect on the Cold War, and its vast influence throughout world culture at every level, from high to pop. 1984 isn't just a novel; it's a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell's final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes--Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, 2+2=5--that gain potency with every year. Particularly in 2016, when the election of Donald Trump made it a bestseller ("Ministry of Alternative Facts," anyone?). Its influence has morphed endlessly into novels (The Handmaid's Tale), films (Brazil), television shows (V for Vendetta), rock albums (Diamond Dogs), commercials (Apple), even reality TV (Big Brother). The Ministry of Truth is the first book that fully examines the epochal and cultural event that is 1984 in all its aspects: its roots in the utopian and dystopian literature that preceded it; the personal experiences in wartime Great Britain that Orwell drew on as he struggled to finish his masterpiece in his dying days; and the political and cultural phenomena that the novel ignited at once upon publication and that far from subsiding, have only grown over the decades. It explains how fiction history informs fiction and how fiction explains history.

Dorian Unbound by Sean O'Toole Pdf

"This book examines the broad archive of texts that Oscar Wilde read from quite early in his literary career through to the release of Dorian Gray, making the case for a transnational network of literary forms that influenced Wilde's unique and hybrid prose. Arguing that prevailing scholarly discourse on Dorian's aesthetic and decadent contexts has unintentionally obscured an even richer array of cultural movements from which Wilde drew inspiration, O'Toole makes a significant case for a more dynamic reading of the novel"--

Hurricane Dorian—The Story of the Greatest and Deadliest Hurricane To by Wayne Neely Pdf

Hurricane Dorian is a heartbreaking tale for The Bahamas. It was one of the strongest North Atlantic hurricanes and the strongest Bahamian hurricane and caused about $3.4 billion in damages to the Bahamian economy. Hurricane Dorian struck Abaco and Grand Bahama with wind speeds of 185 mph and had the highest wind speeds for a North Atlantic landfalling hurricane. The storm caused the death of 74 people in The Bahamas. In addition, more than 75 percent of all homes on Abaco were either damaged or destroyed. In East End, Grand Bahama, satellite data suggested that 76 to 100 percent of the buildings were destroyed. This book includes the meteorological history, records broken, compelling personal recollections, its impact on each island affected, a chapter on climate change and its effects on hurricanes, the benefits of hurricanes, and why we need them on planet Earth. This book is a must-read!

Retold for Learners of English by Jill Nevile. ‘When we are happy, we are always good’, says Lord Henry, ‘but when we are good, we are not always happy.’ Lord Henry’s lazy, clever words lead the young Dorian Gray into a world where it is better to be beautiful than to be good; a world where anything can be forgiven – even murder – if it can make people laugh at a dinner party.

The Picture of Dorian Gray and Three Stories by Oscar Wilde Pdf

A fashionable young man sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty in Oscar Wilde's fascinating gothic tale. The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde’s only full-length novel, is the enduringly eerie story of a naïve and irresistible young man lured by decadent Lord Henry Wotton into a life of depravity. Though Dorian is steeped in sin, his face remains perfect, unlined as years pass—while only his portrait, locked away, reveals the blackness of his soul. This timeless tale of Gothic horror and fable, reveling in the unabashed hedonism and cynical wit of its characters, epitomizes Wilde’s literary revolt against the proprieties of the Victorian era. Sharing this volume with The Picture of Dorian Gray are Wilde’s clever and sophisticated story “Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime” and two of his delicate fairy tales, “The Happy Prince” and “The Birthday of the Infanta.” With an Introduction by Gary Schnidgall and an Afterword by Peter Raby

The Picture Of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde (Stage-3) by Oscar Wilde Pdf

Dorian Gray is having his picture painted by Basil Hallward, who is charmed by his looks. But when Sir Henry Wotton visits and seduces Dorian into the worship of youthful beauty with an intoxicating speech, Dorian makes a wish he will live to regret: that all the marks of age will now be reflected in the portrait rather than on Dorian’s own face. The stage is now set for a masterful tale about appearance, reality, art, life, truth, fiction and the burden of conscience.

The Picture of Dorian Gray (with an Essay by Jules Barbey D'Aurevilly) by Oscar Wilde Pdf

Perhaps the book that created the most general discussion and criticism at this period was "The Picture of Dorian Gray," which appeared originally in Lippincott's Magazine in July, 1890, as the complete novel for that issue... Wilde at first demurred on the ground that he had not tried his hand on a long and sustained story, but fi nally gave his consent. The story seems to have simmered in his mind for some time, though after he had once begun it, it was quickly completed. Wilde has himself said that he wrote it in a few days. --- In a preface to this story, written for a later edition in book form, Mr. Basil Ward, the artist, tells of the genesis of the story. It goes back to the year 1884, when Oscar Wilde was often in Mr. Ward's studio. One of Mr. Ward's sitters was a young man of such peculiar beauty that his friends had nicknamed him "The Radiant Youth." Each afternoon Wilde watched the work advance, enchanting everybody meanwhile with brilliant talk, until at last the portrait was fi nished and its original had gone his way - rejoicing, without doubt, to be at liberty. "What a pity," sighed Wilde, "that such a glorious creature should ever grow old!" - "Yes, it is indeed," answered Mr. Ward. "How delightful it would be if 'Dorian' could remain exactly as he is while the portrait aged and withered in his stead. I wish it might be so!" - And that was all. "I occupied myself," says Mr. Ward, "with the picture for perhaps a quarter of an hour, during which Wilde smoked refl ectively, but uttered not one word. He arose presently and sauntered to the door, merely nodding as he left the room." Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly
