Liquid Crystals and Ordered Fluids by Julian F. Johnson,Roger S. Porter Pdf

This volume represents a collection of selected papers from a symposium of the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry held in Chicago during the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, August, 1973. The response was remarkable to this "By Invitation" symposium on Ordered Fluids and Liquid Crystals. The size alone expresses the growth of the field. The number of contributions assembled here, for example, is approximately twice that at each of the two previous American Chemical Society symposia on this subject. Contributions from eleven countries were presented and this volume contains more than this number of papers from abroad. The increased attention to liquid crystals has brought some interesting trends in the kinds of systems, the experimental methods, and the nature of the lahoratories involved. There has, for example, been an impressive increase in the number of academic studies on liquid crystals. The works herewith published also represent an im pressive variety of traditional and novel eXperimental techniques for the study of liquid crystals. These include rheology, infrared spec troscopy, dielectrics, ultrasonics, pulsed NMR, the Kerr effect, plus thermal and electrical conductivity.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of Liquid Crystals by Ronald Y. Dong Pdf

Intended for researchers and students in physics, chemistry and materials science, this book provides the necessary background information and sufficient mathematical and physical detail to study the current research literature. The book begins with a survey of liquid crystal phases and field effects, together with an introduction to the basic physics of nuclear magnetic resonance. It then discusses orientational ordering and molecular field theories for various liquid crystal molecules and nmr studies of uniaxial and biaxial phases. Subsequent chapters consider spin relaxation processes and rotational, translational, and internal molecular dynamics of liquid crystals. The final chapter discusses two-dimensional and multiple- quantum nmr spectroscopies and their application in elucidating liquid crystal properties. This second edition, updated throughout, incorporates many new references and includes new mathematical appendices.

Liquid Crystal - Applications And Uses (Volume 2) by Birendra Bahadur Pdf

This book reviews comprehensively the technological, scientific, artistic and medical applications of liquid crystals. It starts with the basics of liquid crystals and covers electro-optical, thermo-optical, colour, polymeric, lyotropic, and scientific applications of liquid crystalline materials. It discusses the fabrication and operational principles of a full range of liquid crystal displays including dynamic scattering, twisted nematic, supertwisted nematic, dichroic, smectic A, ferroelectric, polymer dispersed, light valve, active matrix, etc., in detail. It also covers the emerging applications of liquid crystals such as optical computing, nonlinear optics, decorative and visual arts. Classification, theory, chemical structure, physical properties and surface alignment of liquid crystals have detailed chapters to facilitate the basic understanding of the science behind LCDs and other uses of liquid crystals. The chapters, liquid crystal polymers and lyotropic liquid crystals, give deep insight into these areas. The potential uses and applications are also described in detail.

Multifrequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance by Sushil K. Misra Pdf

This handbook is aimed to deliver an up-to-date account of some of the recently developed experimental and theoretical methods in EPR, as well as a complete up-to-date listing of the experimentally determined values of multifrequency transition-ion spin Hamiltonian parameters by Sushil Misra, reported in the past 20 years, extending such a listing published by him in the Handbook on Electron Spin Resonance, volume 2. This extensive data tabulation makes up roughly 60% of the book`s content. It is complemented by the first full compilation of hyperfine splittings and g-factors for aminoxyl (nitroxide) radicals since 197 by Larry Berliner, a world expert on spin labeling, helping to identify and interpret substances and processes by means of EPR techniques. The book also includes coverage of the recently developed experimental technique of rapid-scan EPR by Sandra Eaton and Gareth Eaton, and a thorough review of computational modeling in EPR by Stefan Stoll, author of Easy Spin.
