English Dialogues With Phonetic Transcriptions (Classic Reprint) by Charles Henry Jeaffreson Pdf
Excerpt from English Dialogues With Phonetic Transcriptions Undoubtedly no phonetic system can claim the accuracy and certainty of a phonograph. Sounds which do not exist in the language of the learner will always be best learned by hearing them pronounced by an educated native. But we can assure those readers who are unaccustomed to phonetic texts, and feel repelled by their apparent uncouthness and difficulty, that they can master our system after a few hours of attentive study and that he who has once mastered it cannot fail to acquire a very respectable pronunciation. To those who have the advantage of a native teacher they will also be a valuable aid to remembering and fixing the correct sounds. We have not used word-contractions like Sweet in his Elementarbuch d. gespr. Englisch, as we think that it will be easier for the student to read the texts with the ordinary word-divisions than in the odd-looking lumps adopted in that work. Ingenious they certainly are, and wonderfully accurate in their representation of accent and stress, but we think that the difficulty of reading them counterbalances their good points. Mr. Sweet, too, seems now to give this method the preference, as may be seen from his last book, Primer of Spoken English. On doubtful points we have consulted the best authorities, - Professors Vietor, Sweet and Western and others.
