The Hundred Best English Poems (Classic Reprint) by Adam L. Gowans Pdf

Excerpt from The Hundred Best English Poems I have taken the greatest care with the texts Of the poems. The editions followed have been mentioned in every case. I have scrupulously retained the punctuation of these original edi tions, and only modernized the spelling of the old copies; while I have not ventured to omit any part Of any poem. I have not supplied titles of my own, but have adopted those I found already employed in the editions used as models, or, in some of the cases in which I found none, have merely added a descriptive one, such as Song from 'don Juan.' A Household Book of English Poetry (Classic Reprint) by Richard Chenevix Trench Pdf

Excerpt from A Household Book of English Poetry The first question which I asked myself, when I resumed a purpose long ago entertained, and then for a long while laid aside, of publishing such a selection of English Poetry as the present, was this, namely, whether Mr. Palgrave by his Golden Treasury had not so occupied the ground that there was no place for one who should come after. The selection is one made with so exact an acquaintance with the sources from which such a Trea sury as his should be replenished, with so fine a taste in regard of what should be admitted there, that this was the conclusion to which at the first I was disposed to arrive. But on further consideration I saw reason to change my mind. The volume which I meditated was on so different a scheme and plan from his, that, while no doubt I should sometimes go over ground which he had gone over before, it seemed likely that for the most part our paths would be different, and the poems which I should select not identical with those already chosen by him. This to so great an extent has proved the case, that of more than three hundred pieces which compose this volume, less than sixty have appeared in his. And. A Book of English Poetry (Classic Reprint) by George Beaumont Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of English Poetry This book has been made in response to the wishes of teachers who need a collection of English prose and poetry in a single volume and who desire to have the selections provided with notes. It contains no selection not included in its predecessors, English Poetry (1170-1892) and English Prose (1137-1890). The condensation of the two volumes has been made with care, and it is believed that no selection has been omitted which is necessary in a rapid survey course. For the texts previous to Chaucer translations have been made and printed side by side with the texts. These translations of course have not all the qualities of the originals, but an attempt has been made to preserve not only the metrical form but also the tone and general manner. Where the original had poor rhymes, or loose syntax, or undignified diction, such features have been permitted in the translation, though it was not always possible to reproduce each at the exact point of its appearance. The effort to preserve the tone of the original has often rendered the task of translation or paraphrase difficult because of the necessity of excluding ideas and sentiments foreign to the original as well as diction out of harmony with it. The briefer and simpler notes are placed on the same page with the text, because the editor feels that turning frequently to the back of a book to consult notes or a glossary disturbs the readers enjoyment and thereby interferes with, if it does not destroy, the effect of a piece of literature. The more elaborate notes, containing general information about the texts or authors, or discussing difficulties, or quoting interesting parallels, are placed at the end of the volume for the same reason - that is, to avoid interference with the enjoyment of the reader while he is engaged in reading. They may be consulted beforehand, in preparation for reading, or later, in explanation of difficulties that have not been solved- by the reader himself. In the case of a few poems, the no.tes are purposely elaborate, because the poems themselves are either especially difficult, or especially suggestive in diction, or especially loaded with allusions; but in general the editor has striven to keep the annotations down to a practical minimum. That he has not always succeeded in this effort, he is only too well aware. There are many of the notes which he himself would disregard in reading and in teaching. But no one has yet discovered exactly what number of grains of sand makes a heap, and the present editor has not even been able to maintain strict consistency in regard to what knowledge may safely be assumed as possessed by students or easily accessible to them. Every student of English should possess a copy of Webster's Secondary School Dictionary or the Standard Desk Dictionary. Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry (Classic Reprint) by Charles MacKay Pdf

Excerpt from Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry The design of the Editor or Compiler of the following volume was to present one great panoramic view of the masterpieces of English poetry, and that of the publishers to issue it in a form and at a price which would recommend it to the taste of the rich, without placing it beyond the means of the poor. The original intention of the Editor was to commence with Chaucer and end with Wordsworth, Moore, Rogers, Hood, Campbell, and other poets of the last generation, who have recently passed from among us, thus excluding the works of living writers. To this arrangement the publishers made objection, on the ground, very easily defensible, that some of the brightest gems of the "Thousand and One" are the productions of living genius - both in Great Britain and the United States of America. The Editor yielded the point, but was met with the serious difficulty that it was not in all cases possible to include the works of living writers - even if their consent could be obtained; - firstly, because the copyrights were not always their own; - secondly, because their addresses were not obtainable without great trouble and loss of time; - and thirdly, because the modem poets, in England and America, were so numerous, that if specimens of all their poetic jewellery were got together, an undue proportion of the volume would be occupied by writers of the second half of the nineteenth century. Another difficulty which personally was more serious, existed in the dilemma in which the Editor found himself with regard to his own compositions. Excerpt from English Narrative Poems Akin to the Epic is the Mock Epic, which appropri ates the Epic machinery and Epic style to use them in dealing with trivialities. In Pope's The Rape of the Lock, the most artistic Mock Epic in English, the theft of a single lock of hair becomes an act of national and supernatural interest and a game of cards is described as if it were a mighty battle. A New Study of English Poetry (Classic Reprint) by Henry Newbolt Pdf

Excerpt from A New Study of English Poetry Evidently Authority, if there be any such power, would need only to speak once and for all but suggestion is a humbler form of persuasion and must be clear and persistent. Unfortunately it is also dangerous to be too clear or too persistent: and I have realised this so strongly that 1 fear to have done my beliefs less than justice. My chief feeling, in parting from the book, is one of anxiety lest I have stated them, vital and moment ous as they seem to me, in too slight a form and little of and illustration. Early English Poems by Henry S. Pancoast Pdf

Excerpt from Early English Poems: Selected and Edited This change of attitude, which might be illustrated by many similar examples, is assuredly a sign of progress. It is no depreciation of the labor of the scholar, but rather an evidence of its value. It is plain that the researches of the specialist in these fields, minute and contracted as they may have some times seemed, have had a wider influence, a more general significance, than might at first have been supposed. It is plain that these intensive students of the life, language, and literature of early England may be justly compared to those adventurers who press on in the van of immigration, and so open up to civilization regions hitherto inaccessible, or but sparsely settled. In this work of reclamation the translator as well as the pioneer scholar has his place and office. It is better, of course, to read this early literature in the language in which it was written, than to read it in translation, but it is better to read it in a translation, or in a modernized form, than not to read it at all. We may regret that Keats could not read the Iliad in Greek, and we may be thankful at the same time that he did read it in English. English Poetry and Poets (Classic Reprint) by Sarah Warner Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from English Poetry and Poets In the hope that a work undertaken without the remotest view to publication, but for the comparatively ephemeral purpose of imparting oral information and entertainment, may prove permanently valuable, I commit to print the result of much delightful reading, with some loving and earnest (though far from scholarly) original criticism. In my eager and various reading I quoted and transposed - for the benefit of my classes in English Poetry - from many authors. It did not then seem necessary to retain in memory all the sources of my information; consequently I cannot now duly accredit some of my borrowings. In a work like this, such an offence may, I trust, be forgiven. Where much learned and able work has been done by "my betters," I have not hoped to excel; but if I may help to foster a love and appreciation of the good and true in English verse, I shall have attained to my highest end and ambition. Shorter English Poems (Classic Reprint) by Henry Morley Pdf

Excerpt from Shorter English Poems We propose also to supplement the plan already sketched by giving a section to our longer poems and another to our longer prose works. In reproducing these it will become unavoidable that parts should represent the whole; but each will be so described that whatever passages are given may be read with knowledge of their context and of their relation to the main design. These volumes will gain much by rigid avoidance of disconnected extracts. A mere book of cuttings out of finished pieces is handiwork like that of the degenerate courtiers of the days of Louis XV., who snipped single figures from engravings of the works of the best masters, and stuck them confusedly on screens. Every true work of art has its own point of unity, and blends its harmonies into a perfect round. No healthy sense of Literature can be acquired, and where any exists it can only be stupefied, by the use of elegant extracts. A fair selection from its riches ought to bring a large and happy sense of the true meaning of mu Literature home into many a room where books must needs be few, and ought to make the wit and wisdom of our country pleasant to young and old wherever English books are read. If sometimes a good work contains a word or passage that, through change of manners, could not now be read aloud in every household, I remove the stumbling-block. But wherever change is made, square brackets or notes show the extent of it. In giving pieces of our early Literature, writers before the Conquest will be represented by translation. In what was written after that time, spelling of words still current will be brought into agreement with the present usage, whenever that can be done without injury to rhyme, metre, or sense; and many notes will help the interpretation of the words now obsolete. The notes may contain any kind of information or suggestion that will quicken the enjoyment of the work they illustrate. Now and then some short pieces of old English will be left just as we receive them from our forefathers, and this will be done at intervals frequent enough to make them serviceable to those who care to get what help they can to a closer knowledge of our language. The best use of the study of language is to develop our perception of the finer charms of thought, and if it should be the good fortune of this Library to be well thumbed in many homes, the quiet hours will come when one and another reader will be disposed to get all possible help from notes that were at first passed over. The Advance of English Poetry in the Twentieth Century (Classic Reprint) by William Lyon Phelps Pdf

Excerpt from The Advance of English Poetry in the Twentieth Century The Great War has had a stimulating effect on the production Of poetry. Professional poets have been spokesmen for the inarticulate, and a host of hitherto unknown writers have acquired reputation. An immense amount of verse has been written by soldiers in active service. The Allies are fighting for human liberty, and this Idea is an inspiration. It is comforting to know that some who have made the supreme sacrifice will be remembered through their printed poems, and it is a pleasure to aid in giving them public recognition. Furthermore, the war, undertaken by Germany to dominate the world by crushing the power of Great Britain, has united all English-speaking people as nothing else could have done. In this book, all poetry written in the English language is considered as belonging to English literature. It should be apparent that I am not a sectarian in art, but am thankful for poetry wherever I find it. I have endeavored to make clear the artistic. English Songs, and Other Small Poems (Classic Reprint) by Barry Cornwall Pdf

Excerpt from English Songs, and Other Small Poems "Barry Cornwall, with the exception of Coleridge, is the most genuine poet of love, who has, for a long period, appeared among us. There is an intense and passionate beauty, a depth of affection, in his little dramatic poems, which appear even in the affectionate triflings of his gentle characters. He illustrates that holiest of human emotions, which, while it will twine itself with the frailest twig, or dally with the most evanescent shadow of creation, wasting its excess of kindliness on all around it, is yet able to 'look on tempests and be never shaken.' Love is gently omnipotent in his poems; accident and death itself are but passing clouds, which scarcely vex and which cannot harm it. The lover seems to breathe out his life in the arms of his mistress, as calmly as the infant sinks into its softest slumber. The fair blossoms of his genius, though light and trembling at the breeze, spring from a wide, and deep, and robust stock, which will sustain far taller branches without being exhausted."
