Poetry and Sustainability in Education by Sandra Lee Kleppe,Angela Sorby Pdf

This edited collection offers educators at all levels a range of practical and theoretical approaches to teaching poetry in the context of environmental sustainability. The contributors are keenly aware of the urgency facing the planet’s ecosystems—ecosystems which include all of us—and this volume makes the case that teaching poetry is not a luxury. Each of the book’s three sections works from a specific angle and register. Part I focuses on pragmatic approaches to classroom activities and curricular choices; Part II considers policies and politics, including the role of the UN’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) program; and Part III takes a widescreen view, exploring the philosophical issues that arise when poems are integrated into sustainability curricula. This book exemplifies how poetry empowers readers to think imaginatively about how to sustain—and why to sustain—our world, its resources, and its beauty.

* One of the Boston Globe's Best Books of 2020 * Winner of the Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets, selected by Li-Young Lee The More Extravagant Feast focuses on the trophic exchanges of a human body with the world via pregnancy, motherhood, and interconnection—the acts of making and sustaining other bodies from one’s own, and one’s own from the larger world. Leah Naomi Green writes from attentiveness to the vast availability and capacity of the weedy, fecund earth and from her own human place within more-than-human life, death, and birth. Lyrically and spiritually rich, striving toward honesty and understanding, The More Extravagant Feast is an extraordinary book of awareness of our dependency on ecological systems—seen and unseen.

The First Free Women by Matty Weingast Pdf

An Ancient Collection Reimagined Composed around the Buddha’s lifetime, the Therigatha (“Verses of the Elder Nuns”) contains the poems of the first Buddhist women: princesses and courtesans, tired wives of arranged marriages and the desperately in love, those born into limitless wealth and those born with nothing at all. The original authors of the Therigatha were women from every kind of background, but they all shared a deep-seated desire for awakening and liberation. In The First Free Women, Matty Weingast has reimagined this ancient collection and created a contemporary and radical adaptation that takes the essence of each poem and highlights the struggles and doubts, as well as the strength, perseverance, and profound compassion, embodied by these courageous women.

Little Green Poetry by Andrew Walton Pdf

This collection of poems - some playful, others serious - is intended to highlight the destruction of our environment at the hands of capitalism. I have also put forward the alternative, a society where wealth is shared, rather than hoarded, and used for the common good. A planet where the vast majority of its citizens - the 99% - are in control, not a tiny elite, to allow us to plan our economy to solve environmental threats.

Space Struck by Paige Lewis Pdf

This astonishing, self-assured debut leads us on an exploration to the stars and back, begging us to reconsider our boundaries of self, time, space, and knowledge. The speaker writes, “...the universe/is an arrow/without end/and it asks only one question;/How dare you?” Zig-zagging through the realms of nature, science, and religion, one finds St. Francis sighing in the corner of a studio apartment, tides that are caused by millions of oysters “gasping in unison,” an ark filled with women in its stables, and prayers that reach God fastest by balloon. There’s pathos: “When my new lover tells me I’m correct to love him, I/realize the sound isn’t metal at all. It’s not the coins rattling/ on concrete, but the fingers scraping to pick them up.” And humor, too: “...even the sun’s been sighing Not you again/when it sees me.” After reading this far-reaching, inventive collection, we too are startled, space struck, our pockets gloriously “filled with space dust.”

A Journey Towards Sustainability? by Stella Evelyne Tesha Pdf

At first I only thought of focusing on sustainability and environmental poems, mainly because my mind is usually occupied by sustainability issues; why do they exist? What is the easiest way to make people understand? Who should be involved? How should anyone be involved? how do we solve them collectively? Being knowledgeable and passionate about sustainable development and environmental management has been both a blessing and a curse for me. A blessing because I have come to understand many of the issues especially how the social, politics, economics and environment are inseparable, and a curse because I do not have the opportunities or the power I need to be able to make a real difference and therefore it makes me frustrated. Anyway.... along the way I got distracted by political issues which are currently happening around the world but most specifically in Tanzania. It became impossible to separate sustainability, environmental management and the politics. Instead of giving in to frustration, I decided to follow through knowing that everything happens for a reason. I wanted to share the reality of my journey with you therefore I ended up producing two books instead of one as planned. Book two focuses on the journey towards sustainability 'Politricks and Polipricks'.
