Epitome of History and Principles of Education by Thomas Jefferson McEvoy Pdf

Excerpt from Epitome of History and Principles of Education The first edition of this book was a pioneer in the effort to organize the facts in the history of education. That effort found immediate justification in training schools, normal schools, universities, and especially home study by zealous men and women who could not take established courses in educational institutions. This second edition, revised and enlarged, embodies eight years more of experience, suggestions from many educators, the benefits of scholarly research by other authors, and the helpful contributions from various kinds of experiment to determine standards of effectual teaching. The book itself is an expression of gratitude to all who have aided in making a clearer presentation of history and principles of education. The Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by T. Raymont Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Education At the same time, I have attempted, in planning and executing the work, to contribute in some small degree towards placing the study of education on a secure basis. The great majority of English books on the subject are either frankly empirical or frankly psychological. The merest glance at these pages will show that it would ill become me to speak slightingly of the excellent work that has been done in the first of these directions. But the final word cannot rest with the empiricists. It remains for professed students of education to gather up, to harmonise, and to present in systematic form, the lessons of experience. Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Elmer Bolton Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Education The present work is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience in teaching the subject for two years in the State Normal School at Milwaukee and eight years in the State Uni versity of Iowa. Previous to this experience, many of the ideas here expressed had been gradually shaping themselves while the author was teaching and supervising in public schools. All of the material has been carefully tested in junior and senior university classes, and much of it in advanced normal school classes. Portions of several chapters have been given many times in teachers' institutes and associations. The distinct aim, however, has been to produce a text-book of college grade for beginners in the study of educational science. Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Teaching Experience is beginning to show that teaching, like every other department of human thought and activity, must change with the changing conditions of society, or it will fall in the rear of civilization and become an obstacle to improvement. American Education by Edward D. Mansfield Pdf

Excerpt from American Education: Its Principles and Elements, Dedicated to the Teachers of the United States Brief and imperfect as my reflections on this momentous subject are, I send them out as a well-meant, if not a valuable, offering to the teachers of the United States. They may, perhaps, aid some persons in contemplating those higher and nobler principles which lie beyond the details of books and the modes of instruction - in fine, those principles which concern universal and direct the tiny of the soul. Principles of Secondary Education by Charles de Garmo Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Secondary Education: A Textbook Since the first edition of this volume was issued seven years ago, there has been a rapid development in some aspects of the American high school. The function and educational value of the several studies have not been materially changed; consequently no sufficient reason exists for altering the parts of this book that pertain to those topics. Much pressure, however, has been brought to bear upon the high school to compel it to alter somewhat fundamentally its leading purposes, especially with respect to vocational ends. This powerful modern movement calls for a reexamination of educational principles in the light of present conditions. What high-school leaders and teachers seem most to desire is a perspective of the whole a situation, in order that they may estimate correctly the validity of the respective claims of general and special education, for they fluctuate according to the needs and conditions of various locations. To meet this need for perspective, six chapters upon "Basic Ideals for Educational Progress" have been added. Social Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by George Herbert Betts Pdf

Excerpt from Social Principles of Education The problem of philosophy is to bring to light new and more profound meanings. Philosophy seeks to find in the world as a whole a broader and richer significance through discovering the ulti mate and vital relations which exist among its parts. It tries so to organize and unify experience that it may possess the richest and fullest reality pos sible. Philosophy attempts to fit part to part in the great mosaic of creation, confident that the meaning of the whole and of each part will appear when the pattern is complete. Principles of Secondary Education by Charles De Garmo Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Secondary Education: A Text-Book It is the aim of this volume to make an initial statement of such principles, in the form of a text book for college and university classes. That there is need for such a work in English is evident, whether we consider the magnitude of the interests now involved in the American high school, or the influence exerted by the monumental German works on gymnasial education, from Schrader to Bau meister, or the inadequacy of elementary professional training as a preparation for high-school teaching. A Short History of Education (Classic Reprint) by Oscar Browning Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Education While I may be wrong in the general hypothesis, I feel thati am right in the following particulars There must be some teachers who are more than mere instruments. More than operatives, more than artisans; there must be some who can see processes as they are related to law, - who, while obedient to law, can throw their own personality into their methods and can make such adaptations of them as varying circumstances may demand. If most teach ers are doomed to be the slaves of routine, there must be some who have the ability to create and to control. In a word, along with the great multitude of mere teachers, there must be a growing body of educators. I cannot but think that in every normal school there are men and women who would love to walk upon these heights, to breathe this freer air, and who would thus see in teaching a fair field for the exercise of their best gifts. The attention of such should be drawn somewhat away from the merely mechanical aspects of teaching, and fixed on those professional studies that will broaden the Iteacher's vision and give him the consciousness of some degree of creative power. The studies I mean are educational science and educational his tory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Principles of Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Nathan A. Harvey Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Some men need to apologize for living, and the preface of a book is frequently in the nature of an apology for its existence. Whether a book needs an apology or not. it is sometimes advantageous to a reader to know the author's point of view, and what he expects the book to accomplish. Of the five hundred thousand teachers in the United States, about one hundred thousand are teaching their first term of school this year. Of this one hundred thousand, scarcely more than ten thousand have had any professional training, or have given to the subject of teaching any serious preliminary thought that could be called professional study. The professional aspect of the work must be presented to them after the work of teaching has been entered upon. In the hope that it may contribute somewhat to the realization that there is a professional aspect of teaching, and a body of educational doctrine worth while for a teacher to know, this volume is sent forth. The book has grown out of the attempt to give to young persons preparing to teach the largest amount of professional knowledge in the shortest possible time. This necessarily involves the selection of somewhat isolated topics, rather than a closely integrated body of educational doctrine. Notes and Outlines of Topics in the History of Education (Classic Reprint) by Daniel Putnam Pdf

Excerpt from Notes and Outlines of Topics in the History of Education Professor Laurie has prepared an admirable summary of the works of Comenius, and other writers have helped much toward a right understanding of the principles of Pestalozzi and Froebel. The student of the history of education should find opportunity, however, to read Pestalozzi's Leonard and Gertrude and the Education of Man by Froebel, as much for the sake of drinking in the Spirit of the men as for becoming acquainted with their thoughts and aims. Many other books should be read, but the study of the history of education can not include, to any considerable extent, a profound study of the literature of education. The study of the literature, when possible, should supplement the study of the history. In connection with the outlines of topics in the history some books for reading will be indicated, as well as works for reference. The Principles of Intellectual Education (Classic Reprint) by F. H. Matthews Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Intellectual Education What then is the aim of education? Only one answer in general terms is possible - it is to prepare for life. But when we begin to work out in detail all that is involved in this apparently simple formula, we begin to be conscious of the difficulties before us. Even setting aside the question of the formation of character, which does not fall directly within the scope of this treatise, and limiting ourselves strictly to the training of the intellect, it is clear that the same qualities do not suit all walks of life, and that the possibility of developing adequately both the special qualities required for special pursuits and the general qualities common to all, if any such there be, will depend in both cases alike on the natural quick ness and adaptability of the mind to be trained and the length of time during which the child can be kept at school. Hence four questions arise (i) What are the general qualities of mind which education is able to develop, if any? (2) What special qualities fit special walks? (3) What is the natural character and adaptability of the mind under training? (4) How long can that training be continued? Now two of these questions, the second and the fourth, cannot be handled effectively in a general disquisition upon education. They require special treatment to be of any great value. At the same time they cannot be put aside altogether. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of Education in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Edwin Grant Dexter Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Education in the United States When the book is used as a text, all of these works should be readily accessible to the student. The book is so arranged as to be studied in either one of two ways: chronologically throughout, by using the marginal references printed in bold-faced type. When this is done, the whole book will be covered in connection with Part I; or chronologically only for the development of elementary and secondary education, higher and special education being considered topically. To follow this plan, the bold-faced marginal references should be disregarded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
