Error Analysis by Jack C. Richards Pdf

The eleven essays in this book cover a wide range of topics from the role of 'interlanguage' and the influence of external factors on the process of language learning, to the development of syntax and the methodology of error analysis. Collectively they provide a valuable perspective on the learning process, which both enriches our theoretical understanding of the processes underlying second language acquisition and suggests ways in which teaching practice may best exploit a learner's skills.

Error Analysis in New Language Acquisition by Andrea Letzel Pdf

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Linguistik, Note: 1,3, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Error Analysis, used in second language analysis, studies the errors learners make in speech and writing. It also studies the different types of errors and why they were made. In this term paper two different types of learners will be considered who perform spontaneously with the help of a picture story. There will be a special focus on the differences and similarities of their errors. There are various possibilities how samples of learner language can be influenced: Firstly, the learner and his proficiency level have to be described and it is important if he speaks or learns other languages irrespective of the MT and the target language that is considered in the analysis. The way of instruction plays also an important role because instructed language learning provides a different error background as if the learner tries to learn the language naturalistically. The second part that has to be described is the language itself. The medium can either be oral or written. Generally, the oral production consist of a more colloquial English for the simple reason that the learner has not as much time to think about formulation than in written speech. Therefore, the Genre and the content of the language production is Error Evaluation and Error correction are additional parts that have not to be included in every Error Analysis. According to the dictionary of Linguistics the error analysis is subdivided and classified in modality, levels of linguistic description, form, type and cause.

Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing, Second Edition by Dana Ferris Pdf

Treatment of Error offers a realistic, well-reasoned account of what teachers of multilingual writers need to know about error and how to put what they know to use. As in the first edition, Ferris again persuasively addresses the fundamental error treatment questions that plague novice and expert writing specialists alike: What types of errors should teachers respond to? When should we respond to them? What are the most efficacious ways of responding to them? And ultimately, what role should error treatment play in the teaching of the process of writing? The second edition improves upon the first by exploring changes in the field since 2002, such as the growing diversity in what is called “L2 writers,” the blurring boundaries between “native” and “non-native” speakers of English, the influence of genre studies and corpus linguistics on the teaching of writing, and the need the move beyond “error” to “second language development” in terms of approaching students and their texts. It also explores what teacher preparation programs need to do to train teachers to treat student error. The second edition features * an updating of the literature in all chapters * a new chapter on academic language development * a postscript on how to integrate error treatment/language development suggestions in Chapters 4-6 into a writing class syllabus * the addition of discussion/analysis questions at the end of each chapter, plus suggested readings, to make the book more useful in pedagogy or teacher development workshops

Error Analysis in English Language Teaching by Elvina Arapah Pdf

The use of language, especially for second/third languages or foreign languages, is inseparable from errors in either oral or written use. In analyzing these language errors, the approach used is contrastively and non-contrastively. This book covers what is means by Error and Mistake, types of language learning errors such as Global and Local Error. In its taxonomies, errors observed in the acquisition of English as a second language as 1) Overgeneralization; 2) Ignorance of rule restriction; 3) Incomplete application of rules; and 4) False concepts hypothesized. Sources of errors are divided into 1) Interference transfer; 2) Intralingual transfer; 3) Context of learning; and 4) Communication strategies. In conducting error analysis, there are several procedures that can be used as a reference: 1) Collecting a sample of learner language, 2) identifying the errors, 3) describing the errors, and 4) explaining the errors. Analysis of these language errors, both oral and written, is needed because the results of the analysis will indicate the treatment that can be done for language learning.

The significance of learners’ errors for English as a foreign language by Anonim Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Kassel (Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften), course: Error Analysis, language: English, abstract: The significance of learners’ errors and mistakes in the process of learning English as a foreign language has been widely discussed in the field of second language acquisition. This paper aims at examining how appropriate the approach of ‘error analysis’ is to characterize students’ errors in order to be able to adapt the content of school lessons according to their difficulties. To do so, the difference of ‘error’ and ‘mistake’ will be explained and important concepts of interlanguage and fossilization will be introduced. The second part of this paper will deal with the identification and classification of errors and will show possible ways of their treatment through providing corrective feedback. Finally, an authentic student material will be analyzed according to the ‘error analysis’ approach, through showing what kind of errors and mistakes can be found, and how they could be corrected. Furthermore, a feedback on improvement will be formulated.

Individual Learner Differences in SLA by Janusz Arabski,Adam Wojtaszek Pdf

Beginning from the conflict between individual learner differences and the institutionalized, often inflexible character of formal language instruction, Individual Learner Differences in SLA addresses the fact that despite this apparent conflict, ultimate success in learning a language is widespread. Starting with theoretically-based chapters, the book follows the thread of learner differences through sections devoted to learner autonomy; differentiated application of learning strategies; diagnostic studies of experienced learners’ management of the learning process; and reports on phonological attainment and development of language skills. Rather than providing an overview of all individual variables, the book reveals how some of them shape and affect the processes of language acquisition and use in particular settings.
