AI in Language Teaching, Learning, and Assessment by Pan, Fang Pdf

The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has ignited a fervent academic discourse. AI's role is as both a powerful ally and a potential adversary in education. For instance, ChatGPT is a generative AI which mimics human conversation with impressive precision. Its capabilities span the educational spectrum, from answering questions and generating essays to composing music and coding. Yet, as with any innovation, its advent has sparked a spirited academic dialogue. AI in Language Teaching, Learning, and Assessment seeks to address these concerns with rigor and thoughtfulness. It explores the undeniable drawbacks of AI in language education and offers strategic insights into their prevention. It scrutinizes the resources and safeguards required to ensure the ethical and secure integration of AI in academic settings. This book lays out the multifaceted benefits of incorporating AI into language teaching, learning, and assessment. Its chapters dissect the transformative impact of AI on pedagogy, teaching materials, assessment methodologies, applied linguistics, and the broader landscape of language education development. This book is a valuable resource for language learners, educators, researchers, and scholars alike. It beckons to those who are keen on exploring and implementing AI in education, as well as AI developers and experts seeking to bridge the chasm between technology and language education.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Foreign Language Learning by Merryanna L. Swartz,Masoud Yazdani Pdf

Multilingual communication within the world community is important for economic, political, and cultural interactions. In a global environment where other languages are increasing in importance in addition to recognized intemational standards (i. e., English and French), language learning is becoming more important for improved international relations. At the same time, recent advances in instructional technology make the promise of building intelligent tutoring systems in advanced technology laboratories to teach these language skills a reality in the near future. These tutoring systems, therefore, may help us foster improved methods for acquiring languages. As active language learners and instructional technology researchers, we felt an international meeting with similar individuals was needed to discuss how such advanced tutoring systems are to be designed and implemented. We held such a meeting, the results of which are presented in this volume. The purpose of this Advanced Workshop, sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, was to bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers who were active in the development of intelligent tutoring systems for foreign language learning. Participants came from computer science, computational linguistics, psychology, and foreign language learning. Washington, D.C. was selected for the Workshop site since it is Merryanna's home city, the capitol of the United States, and an international, multilingual community in its own right. Masoud agreed to the location (with a promise to be shown the White House!) and graciously volunteered to coordinate activities from the European side.

Language Learning with Technology by Lindsay Miller,Junjie Gavin Wu Pdf

This book is about language learning with technology, offering readers theoretical insights as well as practical case studies with a focus on Asia and Asian students. Although technology is rapidly advancing and most, if not all, students are already using technology in their everyday lives, traditional teaching/learning practices still exist throughout Asia. This book provides examples, written by representative educators, from a variety of countries/regions and contexts where technology has successfully been used to enhance language learning. In addition to some everyday examples of using technology: Wikipedia, PowerPoint, Google Docs and YouTube, the book also offers the readers an insight into the future possible uses of advanced technology: Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Eye Tracking. The book presents illustrations of how teachers can, and perhaps should, be open to integrating some form of technology into in-class learning or using it to supplement out-of-class activities.

Innovations and Applications of Technology in Language Education by Hung Phu Bui,Raghvendra Kumar,Nilayam Kumar Kamila Pdf

The linguistics and language education world has recently experienced a rapidly proliferating interest in applying technology. This interdisciplinary area bridges the gap between two previously separate fields. Innovations and Applications of Technology in Language Education is a collection of 12 chapters by an international group of language and linguistics education experts. Although technology in language education is a global interest, its practices should be contextualized. This book covers how language educational technology is currently applied, discusses how it should be applied, and gives directions for its future development. Providing a critical review of respective current practices and perspectives, this book begins by presenting a set of research‐based principles for developing second language teachers’ professionalism. It then examines the use of technology to enhance students’ English language skills. Acknowledging the advantages and disadvantages of AI‐mediated communication, this book argues for the use of AI to facilitate communication in language education. It also proposes the use of AI to develop and administer language tests and suggests guidelines for practitioners to deploy AI in developing and administering language tests efficiently. This book concludes by discussing technology for specific purposes in second language education and the potential of computer‐mediated communication (CMC) to enhance interaction between students.
