Essays on the Religion and Philosophy of the Hindus by H. T. Colebrooke Pdf

Excerpt from Essays on the Religion and Philosophy of the Hindus Called by the indulgence of this meeting to a chair, which I could have wished to have seen more worthily filled, upon so interesting an occasion as the first general meeting of a Society instituted for the important purpose of the advancement of knowledge in relation to Asia, I shall, with your permission, detain you a little from the special business of the day, while I draw your more particular attention to the objects of the Institution, for the furtherance of which we are now assembled. To those countries of Asia, in which civilization may be justly considered to have had its origin, or to have attained its earliest growth, the rest of the civilized world owes a large debt of gratitude, which it cannot but be solicitous to repay; and England, as most advanced in refinement, is, for that very cause, the most beholden; and, by acquisition of dominion in the East, is bound by a yet closer tie. As Englishmen, we participate in the earnest wish, that this duty may be fulfilled, and that obligation requited; and we share in the anxious desire of contributing to such a happy result, by promoting an interchange of benefits, and returning in an improved state that which was received in a ruder form. Essays on the Religion and Philosophy of the Hindus (Classic Reprint) by H. T. COLEBROOKE Pdf

Excerpt from Essays on the Religion and Philosophy of the Hindus IN the early progress of researches into Indian literature, it was doubted whether the Ve'das were extant; or, if portions of them were still preserved, whether any person, however learned in other respects, might be capable of understanding their obsolete dialect. It was believed too, that, if a Bra/maria really possessed the Indian scrip tures, his religious prejudices would nevertheless prevent his imparting the holy knowledge to any but a regenerate Hindu. These notions, supported by popular tales, were cherished long after the Vedas had been communicated to da'ra' snvcou, and parts of them translated into the Persian language by him, or for his use.* The doubts were not finally abandoned, until Colonel polier obtained from Jeyepiir a transcript of what purported to be a complete copy of the Vedas, and which he deposited in the British Museum. About the same time Sir robert chambers collected at Benares numerous fragments of the Indian scripture: General swarms, at, a later period obtained copies of some parts of it; and Sir william jones was successful in procuring valuable portions of the Vedas, and in translating several curious passages from one of them. I have been still more fortunate in collecting at Benares the text and com mentary of a large portion of these celebrated books; and, without waiting to examine them more completely than has been yet practi cable, I shall here attempt to give a brief explanation of what they chiefly contain. Essays in Hindu Theology by Anantanand Rambachan Pdf

This work offers a series of theological explorations of themes not usually addressed in standard treatments of the Hindu tradition. RambachanÂs retrieval of these distinctive insights of Hindu theology has implications that extend across the world's religions, and that touches upon key areas of mutual interest and concern. Beginning with a general introduction to the Hindu theological tradition, the book examines several key issues in Hindu theology and its engagement with contemporary religious, social, political, and inter-faith questions, including the theological methods employed in the study of Hinduism, the discernment of vocation, the theological grounds for social justice in the Hindu tradition, religion and nationalism, violence and non-violence, theological resources for interreligious dialogue (especially among Hindus and Christians), hospitality and openness to the stranger, and spirituality and holiness. In exploring these issues, this study draws deeply from Hindu authoritative sources, but does not limit itself to description. Each chapter is also a work in constructive theology, offering an interpretation of the Hindu tradition appropriate for life in our contemporary world. Essays in Hindu Theology will be of great interest not only to theologians and scholars, but to all who are invested in interreligious understanding and theological engagements with modern challenges.

The Religious Aspects of Hindu Philosophy Stated and Discussed by Joseph Mullens Pdf

Excerpt from The Religious Aspects of Hindu Philosophy Stated and Discussed: A Prize Essay This work was first suggested by the following proposal: - "A prize of 300l. is offered for the best Statement and Refutation, in English, of the Fundamental Errors (opposed to Christian Theism) of the Vedanta, Nyaya, and Sankhya Philosophies, as set forth in the standard native authorities, in the Sanskrit language, treating of those systems; together with a demonstration (supported by such arguments, and conveyed in such a form and manner as may be most likely to prove convincing to learned Hindus imbued with those errors) of the following fundamental principles of Christian Theism, viz.: - "First. - Of the real, and not merely apparent or illusory distinctness of God from all other spirits, and from matter; and of the creation (in the proper sense) of all other spirits, and of matter, by God, in opposition to the Vedánta. "Second. - Of the non-eternity of separate souls, and their creation by God, in opposition to the Nyaya and Sánkhya.
