Essentials of Antimicrobial Pharmacology by Paul H. Axelsen Pdf

For many medical students and physicians, the task of quickly obtaining sufficient, accurate, and up-to-date information about the pharmacology of antimicrobials often involves consulting either lengthy textbooks or inadequate tabular guides. In Essentials of Antimicrobial Pharmacology: A Guide to Fundamentals for Practice, Dr. Axelsen superbly addresses this problem by concisely summarizing the essential medical data concerning the leading antimicrobials used in fighting infectious diseases and clearly illustrating their mechanisms of action. The agents described range from antibacterial and antifungal to antiparasitic and antiviral agents, and include immunomodulators and immunizing agents. For each drug discussed, the book allows rapid access to the essential facts concerning its structure and mechanism of action, the spectrum of its activity, its pharmacokinetics, its adverse effects, and its resistance. Background discussions explain the fundamentals of measuring antibiotic effect, administering antibiotics, distribution and elimination, sensitivity testing, and dose-response relationships. Essentials of Antimicrobial Pharmacology: A Guide to Fundamentals for Practice provides medical students, physicians, and allied health professionals with rapid access to the core principles of antimicrobial pharmacology, and a foundation for decisions about the use of antimicrobials in daily practice.

Fundamentals of Antimicrobial Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics by Alexander A. Vinks,Hartmut Derendorf,Johan W. Mouton Pdf

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the theory and applications of pharmacodynamics of antimicrobial agents. On the basis of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling concepts it has become possible to describe and predict the time course of antimicrobial effects under normal and pathophysiological conditions. The study of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationships can be of considerable value in understanding drug action, defining optimal dosing regimens, and in making predictions under new or changing pre-clinical and clinical circumstances. Not surprisingly, pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling concepts are increasingly applied in both basic and clinical research as well as in drug development. The book will be designed as a reference on the application of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic principles for the optimization of antimicrobial therapy, namely pharmacotherapy, and infectious diseases. The reader will be introduced to various aspects of the fundamentals of antimicrobial pharmacodynamics, the integration of pharmacokinetics with pharmacodynamics for all major classes of antibiotics, and the translation of in vitro and animal model data to basic research and clinical situations in humans.

An Essential Guide to Antimicrobial Agents by Ernesto Macias Pdf

Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a global public health issue, as only a limited number of effective antibiotics are able to treat drug-resistant cases. As such, this compilation discusses the intensive non-clinical and clinical research on the identification of novel and non-conventional anti-infective adjunctive or preventive therapies. The authors review the mode of action of antimicrobial peptides and their therapeutic potential. Their complexity of molecules at the sequential and structural levels allow them to combat a wide variety of bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoan pathogens.Various solvent extracts from the stem of Pongamia pinnata L. are explored in the context of its antimicrobial activity against a wide array of pathogenic microorganisms. In closing, as silver nanoparticles can be more suitable in some bactericidal applications than silver ions, the efficacy of nanosilver as an antimicrobial agent against a range of microbes on the surface of water paints and cotton fabrics is studied.

Pharmacology of Antibiotics by J. D. Williams,A. M. Geddes Pdf

The International Society of Chemotherapy meets every two years to review progress in chemotherapy of infections and of malignant disease. Each meeting gets larger to encompass the extension of chemotherapy into new areas. In some instances, expansion has been rapid, for example in cephalosporins, pen icillins and combination chemotherapy of cancer - in others slow, as in the field of parasitology. New problems of resistance and untoward effects arise; reduction of host toxicity without loss of antitumour activity by new substances occupies wide attention. The improved results with cancer chemotherapy, es pecially in leukaemias, are leading to a greater prevalence of severe infection in patients so treated, pharmacokinetics of drugs in normal and diseased subjects is receiving increasing attention along with related problems of bioavailability and interactions between drugs. Meanwhile the attack on some of the major bacterial infections, such as gonorrhoea and tubercu losis, which were among the first infections to feel the impact of chemotherapy, still continue to be major world problems and are now under attack with new agents and new methods. From this wide field and the 1,000 papers read at the Congress we have produced Proceedings which reflect the variety and vigour of research in this important field of medicine. It was not possible to include all of the papers presented at the Congress but we have attempted to include most aspects of cur rent progress in chemotherapy.
