Exceptional Children and Public School Policy by Arnold Gesell Pdf

Excerpt from Exceptional Children and Public School Policy: Including a Mental Survey of the New Haven Elementary Schools This brief volume is based on a study of actual conditions. It aims not only to report the facts, but to give them a general interpretation from the standpoint of public policy. Our pur pose is to furnish, concisely and concretely, a just picture of the magnitude of the problem of exceptional school children, and to indicate the lines for the development of permanent constructive measures with reference to these children. In the fall of 1918 a mental survey of the elementary schools of the city of New Haven was undertaken. The survey was definitely a co-operative enterprise and depended upon the generous assistance of the regular and Special teachers who reported the data. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to these teachers, as well as to Miss Norma Cutts, Supervisor of Special Classes, and to Mr. Arthur Otis who rendered ao tive assistance in treating the data and preparing the same for statistical presentation. Some of the allusions in the text will be found to be purely local in character, but it is hoped that the general reader will give them an algebraic interpretation. Equivalent findings and recommendations apply to other communities, both larger and smaller. We have aimed to treat the subject in such a manner that any school board official, teacher, administrator or citizen may get a comprehensive glimpse of the problem without undue distraction by details. Therefore the discussion is uniformly brief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Class by Themselves? by Jason Ellis Pdf

In A Class by Themselves?, Jason Ellis provides an erudite and balanced history of special needs education, an early twentieth century educational innovation that continues to polarize school communities across Canada, the United States, and beyond. Ellis situates the evolution of this educational innovation in its proper historical context to explore the rise of intelligence testing, the decline of child labour and rise of vocational guidance, emerging trends in mental hygiene and child psychology, and the implementation of a new progressive curriculum. At the core of this study are the students. This book is the first to draw deeply on rich archival sources, including 1000 pupil records of young people with learning difficulties, who attended public schools between 1918 and 1945. Ellis uses these records to retell individual stories that illuminate how disability filtered down through the school system’s many nooks and crannies to mark disabled students as different from (and often inferior to) other school children. A Class by Themselves? sheds new light on these and other issues by bringing special education’s curious past to bear on its constantly contested present.

Teacher Education Policy by Hendrik D. Gideonse Pdf

This collection of narratives, stories, and case studies brings to life examples of policy processes that affect teacher educators' work, goals, and accomplishments, including certification, testing, allocation of policy responsibilities, standards, and resources. Gideonse, a veteran participant in teacher education policy struggles in many different arenas, has provided an invaluable service by pulling together representative contributions that sample recent policy initiatives from state and Federal agencies, special commissions, teacher education units, and professional organizations. He clearly details the complex interplay of climate, role, structure, assumptions, issues, and players in each episode. This selective combination of diverse types and voluminous amounts of data provides support for teacher educators seeking to more fully realize their professional aspirations and make more productive contributions to the policy debates that affect them.
