Handbook of Textile Fibre Structure by Stephen Eichhorn,J. W. S. Hearle,M Jaffe,T Kikutani Pdf

Due to their complexity and diversity, understanding the structure of textile fibres is of key importance. This authoritative two-volume collection provides a comprehensive review of the structure of an extensive range of textile fibres. Volume 2 begins by reviewing natural fibres such as cellulosic, cotton, protein, wool and silk fibres. Part two considers regenerated cellulosic, protein, alginate, chitin and chitosan fibres. The final part of the book discusses inorganic fibres such as glass, carbon and ceramic fibres as well as specialist fibres such as thermally and chemically-resistant fibres, optical and hollow fibres. Chapters review how fibre structure contributes to key mechanical properties. A companion volume reviews the structure of manufactured polymer fibres. Edited by leading authorities on the subject and with a team of international authors, the two volumes of the Handbook of textile fibre structure is an essential reference for textile technologists, fibre scientists, textile engineers and those in academia. Discusses how fibre structure contributes to key mechanical properties Reviews natural fibres such as cellulosic, cotton and silk fibres and considers various regenerated fibres Examines inorganic fibres including glass and carbon as well as specialist fibres such as chemically-resistant and optical fibres

Handbook of Tensile Properties of Textile and Technical Fibres by A. R. Bunsell Pdf

Fibres usually experience tensile loads whether they are used for apparel or technical structures. Their form, which is long and fine, makes them some of the strongest materials available as well as very flexible. This book provides a concise and authoritative overview of tensile behaviour of a wide range of both natural and synthetic fibres used both in textiles and high performance materials. After preliminary chapters that introduce the reader to tensile properties, failure and testing of fibres, the book is split into two parts. Part one examines tensile properties and failure of natural fibres, such as cotton, hemp, wool and silk. Part two discusses the tensile properties and failure of synthetic fibres ranging from polyamide, polyester and polyethylene fibres to carbon fibres. Many chapters also provide a general background to the fibre, including the manufacture, microstructure, factors that affect tensile properties as well as methods to improve tensile failure. With its distinguished editor and array of international contributors, Handbook of tensile properties of textile and technical fibres is an important reference for fibre scientists, textile technologists and engineers, as well as those in academia. Provides an overview of tensile behaviour of a wide range of both natural and synthetic fibres Examines tensile characterisitics, tensile failure of textiles fibres and factors that affect tensile properties Discusses mircostructures and each type of fibre from manufacture to finished product

High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites by Karl Jakus,Shanti Nair Pdf

High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics by R. C. Bradt,A. G. Evans,D. P. H. Hasselman,F. F. Lange Pdf

These volumes, 5 and 6, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA on July 15, 16, and 17, 1981. These proceedings constitute the third pair of volumes of a con tinuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium and volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, both of which were also held at Penn State. The theme of this conference, as the previous two, focused on the mechanical behavior of ceramic materials in terms of the characteristics of cracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture process. The 78 contributed papers by over 100 authors and co-authors represent the current state of the field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems of interest to those concerned with brittle fracture. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the Symposium provided by the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. Without their support, the magnitude and quality of this conference simply would not have been possible.

Modern Ceramic Engineering by David Richerson,David W. Richerson,William Edward Lee Pdf

Ceramic materials have proven increasingly important in industry and in the fields of electronics, communications, optics, transportation, medicine, energy conversion and pollution control, aerospace, construction, and recreation. Professionals in these fields often require an improved understanding of the specific ceramics materials they are using. Modern Ceramic Engineering, Third Edition helps provide this by introducing the interrelationships between the structure, properties, processing, design concepts, and applications of advanced ceramics. This student-friendly textbook effectively links fundamentals and fabrication requirements to a wide range of interesting engineering application examples. A follow-up to our best-selling second edition, the new edition now includes the latest and most important technological advances in the field. The author emphasizes how ceramics differ from metals and organics and encourages the application of this knowledge for optimal materials selection and design. New topics discuss the definition of ceramics, the combinations of properties fulfilled by ceramics, the evolution of ceramics applications, and their importance in modern civilization. A new chapter provides a well-illustrated review of the latest applications using ceramics and discusses the design requirements that the ceramics must satisfy for each application. The book also updates its chapter on ceramic matrix composites and adds a new section on statistical process control to the chapter on quality assurance. Modern Ceramic Engineering, Third Edition offers a complete and authoritative introduction and reference to the definition, history, structure, processing, and design of ceramics for students and engineers using ceramics in a wide array of industries.
