Filmosophy by Daniel Frampton Pdf

'Filmosophy' is a manifesto for a radically philosophical way of understanding cinema. The book coalesces 20th century ideas of film as thought into a practical theory of 'film-thinking', arguing that film style conveys poetic ideas through a constant dramatic 'intent' about the characters, spaces, and events of film.

Breakup Commercials by Christian Schliebs Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam, language: English, abstract: With filmosophy, Daniel Frampton tries to establish a brand new way to encounter the phenomena of film experience. He claims that „borrowed“ theories like narrativity from literature don ́t get close enough to, on the one hand how film connects with the individual filmgoer and on the other hand how reality is processed by the filmmakers into films. Filmosophy offers multiple accessions to analyze the film experience. As it is labeled as a manifesto, the whole concept keeps an open form, which is in perpetual development. With this assignment I am trying to achieve three aims. Firstly I try to accept Frampton ́s invitation to rethink the traditional way to think about film. The second, less abstract, aim is to convey Frampton ́s concept from feature films to spot advertisement. In this context I ́m going to give a brief introduction to four specific categories Frampton established in his manifesto, namely „filmind“, „film-thinking“, „fluid images“ and „the filmgoer“. These categories will be, if needed, altered for the analysis of commercials. In a second step I am going to apply these categories on the commercial „meinestadt.de - open city“. The third and final aim of this assignment is to evaluate the adaptability of Frampton ́s manifesto for the commercial genre.

Hermeneutics of the Film World by Alberto Baracco Pdf

This book identifies a new methodological strategy for the interpretation of film philosophizing. Many recent works in film philosophy, adopting the approach identified with the term film as philosophy, have considered film as capable of doing philosophy. Focused on the basic relationship between film and filmgoer, the proposed method is founded on the concept of the film world. Combining Merleau-Ponty’s and Ricœur’s philosophies, and reconsidering Goodman’s theory of worldmaking, the film world becomes the hermeneutic horizon from which film philosophical thought can emerge. The book shows how Ricœurian methodology has the potential to provide a valuable resource for film studies by inviting scholars to consider film interpretation in terms of film world hermeneutics.

Lacanian Perspectives on Blade Runner 2049 by Calum Neill Pdf

This book provides a collection of Lacanian responses to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 from leading theorists in the field. Like Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner film, its sequel is now poised to provoke philosophical and psychoanalytic arguments, and to provide illustrations and inspiration for questions of being and the self, for belief and knowledge, the human and the post-human, amongst others. This volume forms the vanguard of responses from a Lacanian perspective, satisfying the hunger to extend the theoretical considerations of the first film in the various new directions the second film invites. Here, the contributors revisit the implications of the human-replicant relationship but move beyond this to consider issues of ideology, politics, and spectatorship. This exciting collection will appeal to an educated film going public, in addition to students and scholars of Lacanian psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic theory, cultural studies, film theory, philosophy and applied psychoanalysis.

Interpreting and Transmitting Kynicism in Joker by Kyle A. Hammonds Pdf

Interpreting and Transmitting Kynicism in Joker: The Dark Side of Film Fandom focuses on fan discourse and discussion surrounding Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019), analyzing how white nationalist movie fans code racist, sexist, ableist, and otherwise marginalizing logics into seemingly innocuous speech. Kyle A. Hammonds posits that, by arguing that their communication is “just their interpretation” of a movie, rather than explicitly political speech, white nationalists can communicate bigoted, extremist rhetoric under the pretext of good-faith film criticism. Hammonds leverages hermeneutic traditions often overlooked in communication and fan studies research to argue that interpretation is the key element of fan communication processes in struggles for authority over the meaning of texts—and that fan communities have a civic duty to identify and delegitimize exclusionary interpretations of pop culture in their fandom.

Endangering Science Fiction Film by Sean Redmond,Leon Marvell Pdf

Endangering Science Fiction Film explores the ways in which science fiction film is a dangerous and endangering genre. The collection argues that science fiction's cinematic power rests in its ability to imagine ‘Other’ worlds that challenge and disturb the lived conditions of the ‘real’ world, as it is presently known to us. From classic films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris to modern blockbusters including World War Z and Gravity, and directors from David Cronenberg to Alfonso Cuarón, contributors comment on the way science fiction film engages with dangerous encounters, liminal experiences, sublime aesthetics, and untethers space and time to question the very nature of human existence. With the analysis of a diverse range of films from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Endangering Science Fiction Film offers a uniquely interdisciplinary view of the evolving and dangerous sentiments and sensibility of this genre.

Cinema/Politics/Philosophy by Nico Baumbach Pdf

Almost fifty years ago, Jean-Louis Comolli and Jean Narboni published the manifesto “Cinema/Ideology/Criticism,” helping to set the agenda for a generation of film theory that used cinema as a means of critiquing capitalist ideology. In recent decades, film studies has moved away from politicized theory, abandoning the productive ways in which theory understands the relationship between cinema, politics, and art. In Cinema/Politics/Philosophy, Nico Baumbach revisits the much-maligned tradition of seventies film theory to reconsider: What does it mean to call cinema political? In this concise and provocative book, Baumbach argues that we need a new philosophical approach that sees cinema as both a mode of thought and a form of politics. Through close readings of the writings on cinema by the contemporary continental philosophers Jacques Rancière, Alain Badiou, and Giorgio Agamben, he asks us to rethink both the legacy of ideology critique and Deleuzian film-philosophy. He explores how cinema can condition philosophy through its own means, challenging received ideas about what is seeable, sayable, and doable. Cinema/Politics/Philosophy offers fundamental new ways to think about cinema as thought, art, and politics.

Filmosophy - About Framptons Radically New Way of Understanding Cinema by Martin Thiele Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam, course: Film + Philosophy = Filmosophy, language: English, abstract: Because the times in film production change, a change in reception is also necessary. In Frampton's theory, film is no longer a photographic reproduction of a past performance. This is not simply be-cause nowadays there are countless assumed realistic film images which were never shot as they are presented later. Frampton concedes that film uses material of the real world but finally - and hence his theory is one of reception - this material becomes its own world with its own processes and even its own thoughts. To draw a consistent picture of his theory he developed a kind of unique language to speak about film.

Interpretation and Film Studies by Phillip Novak Pdf

This book argues that the sustained interpretation of individual movies has, contrary to conventional wisdom, never been a major preoccupation of film studies—that, indeed, the field is marked by a dearth of effective, engaging, and enlightening critical analyses of single films. The book makes this case by surveying what has been written about four historically important and well-known movies (D. W. Griffith’s Way Down East, Marcel Carné’s Port of Shadows, Mike Nichols’s The Graduate, and Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert), none of which has been the focus of sustained critical attention, and by exhaustively examining the kinds of work published in four influential film journals (Cinema Journal, Screen, Wide Angle, and Movie). The book goes on to argue for the value of the work of interpretation, illustrating this value through extended analyses of Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Christopher Nolan’s Memento, both of which thematize interpretation. Novak demonstrates the causes and consequences of reading poorly and the importance of reading well.
