Flagellates by Barry S. C. Leadbeater,John C. Green Pdf

The Flagellates presents a multidisciplinary view of the flagellates exploring both their unity, in terms of their structure, mechanisms and processes, and their diversity in terms of biogeography, niche colonisation, and adaptations to their environment. In addition, evolutionary relationships amongst flagellates are explored. This is the only book published on this subject and features the most up to date information available making it an essential read for any one interested in or working in this field.

Taxonomy, Kinetoplastids, and Flagellates of Fish by Julius Kreir Pdf

Parasitic Protozoa, Volume I: Taxonomy, Kinetoplastids, and Flagellates of Fish contains 10 chapters that first discuss the classification of the protozoans, and then explain the system of parasitic protozoans. This reference material focuses on the significant aspects specifically related to Leishmania and trypanosomes, including the trypanosomes causing disease in man and livestock in Africa, as well as the nonpathogenic trypanosomes of mammals. Lastly, the flagellate parasites of fish are described. This book will be invaluable to physicians and veterinarians interested in studying the parasite's disease-causing property in man and livestock.

Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems by R.I. Jones,V. Ilmavirta Pdf

It is not so very long ago that botanical concensus abandoned the distinction that was drawn between Algae and Flagellata, the latter having been regarded by zoologists as a group of the Protozoa. Even today some colourless flagellates may find themselves occupying different locations in contrasting taxonomic schemes. However, modern developments in ecology have placed greater emphasis on functional attributes of organisms, and hydro biologists have certainly been in the forefront of such changes. Thus we find that flagellates are again the subject of controversy, not so much over their taxonomic position as over their functional position - their role in aquatic ecosystems. At the 22nd Congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology in Lyon, France in August 1983, we conceived the idea of a meeting to discuss 'Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems'. This idea was approved by the committee of SIL and we arranged for the meeting to take place during June 1986 at Lammi Biological Station (University of Helsinki) in Finland. Participants from nine countries enjoyed outstanding hospitality from the staff at the Station during a week of lectures, excursions and discussion ses sions. On behalf of the participants we express our thanks for the generous sponsorship received from the Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Ministry of Education, Lammi Biological Station and the Finnish Limnological Society.

Comparative Protozoology by Orvil Roger Anderson Pdf

The protozoa are an eclectic assemblage of organisms encompassing a wide range of single-celled and multiple-celled colonial organisms lacking tissue organiza tion, but exhibiting remarkably refined biological behavior. In some modern classifications, they are classified as a subkingdom among the Protista (eukary otic single-celled organisms). Although they are not considered a formal cate gory by some taxonomists and some biologists consider the name inappropriate (inferring that they are the first unicellular animals, although some photosynthe size), it is still convenient to consider this group of organisms as an informal collection under the heading of protozoa. Their cosmopolitan distribution, sig nificant ecological role in mineral recycling and enhancement of carbon flow through lower trophic levels of food webs, and remarkable cellular adaptations to enhance survival in diverse environments make them significant organisms for biological investigation. In some cases, biologists are introduced to this group in first level courses or in invertebrate zoology, but never develop a full appreciation for the diverse and biologically sophisticated characteristics of these organisms. This book is intended as a survey of broad concepts in protozoan biology with an emphasis on comparative data. The focus is on the zoological aspects of the group. Topics more closely related to plantlike characteristics, as presented in books on phycol ogy, are not considered in detail here. A sound background in modern biology and an introduction to cellular biology will be helpful in understanding Chapters 15 and 16, which include a substantial amount of information on biochemistry.

Marine Phytoplankton by Jahn Throndsen,Berit R. Heimdal Pdf

Aiding the identification of marine phytoplankton, this work pays particular attention to flagellated and extant coccolithophorid taxa. Because most identifications are routinely done employing light microscopy the emphasis is on this means of viewing, but more advanced methods are also examined.

The Cytoskeleton of Flagellate and Ciliate Protists by Michael Melkonian,Robert A. Andersen,Eberhard Schnepf Pdf

This is a new type of calculus book: Students who master this text will be well versed in calculus and, in addition, possess a useful working knowledge of how to use modern symbolic mathematics software systems for solving problems in calculus. This will equip them with the mathematical competence they need for science and engineering and the competitive workplace. MACSYMA is used as the software in which the example programs and calculations are given. However, by the experience gained in this book, the student will also be able to use any of the other major mathematical software systems, like for example AXIOM, MATHEMATICA, MAPLE, DERIVE or REDUCE, for doing calculus on computers.

Intestinal Microorganisms of Termites and Other Invertebrates by Helmut König Pdf

This is the first work to focus on microbes in gut systems of soil animals. Beginning with an overview of the biology of soil invertebrates, the text turns to the gut microbiota of termites, which are important soil processors in tropical and subtropical regions. Coverage extends to intestinal microbiota of such other litter decomposers as earthworms, springtails, millipedes, and woodlice. Thoroughly illustrated, including color photographs.

Beneficial Microorganisms in Multicellular Life Forms by Eugene Rosenberg,Uri Gophna Pdf

All animals and plants form associations with hundreds or thousands of different beneficial microorganisms. These symbiotic microbes play an important role in the development, adaptation, health and evolution of their hosts. This book brings together a group of diverse biologists to discuss microbial interactions with multicellular life forms including insects, corals, plants, and mammals, including humans. The various mechanisms by which microorganisms benefit their hosts are discussed, including providing essential nutrients, preventing disease, inducing the immune system, and combating stress. Since the microbiota can be transferred from parent to offspring, it plays an important role in the origin and evolution of animal and plant species. This book should be of interest to the widest range of biological scientists, merging the studies of host and microbial physiology, symbiosis, and the ecology and evolution of symbiotic partners.

(Endo)symbiotic Methanogenic Archaea by Johannes H. P. Hackstein Pdf

This updated monograph deals with methanogenic endosymbionts of anaerobic protists, in particular ciliates and termite flagellates, and with methanogens in the gastrointestinal tracts of vertebrates and arthropods. Further chapters discuss the genomic consequences of living together in symbiotic associations, the role of methanogens in syntrophic degradation, and the function and evolution of hydrogenosomes, hydrogen-producing organelles of certain anaerobic protists. Methanogens are prokaryotic microorganisms that produce methane as an end-product of a complex biochemical pathway. They are strictly anaerobic archaea and occupy a wide variety of anoxic environments. Methanogens also thrive in the cytoplasm of anaerobic unicellular eukaryotes and in the gastrointestinal tracts of animals and humans. The symbiotic methanogens in the gastrointestinal tracts of ruminants and other “methanogenic” mammals contribute significantly to the global methane budget; especially the rumen hosts an impressive diversity of methanogens. This makes this updated volume an interesting read for scientists and students in Microbiology and Physiology.
