Flora Hongkongensis: A Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of the Island of Hongkong (Classic Reprint) by George Bentham Pdf

Excerpt from Flora Hongkongensis: A Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of the Island of Hongkong Tn: little island of Hongkong is situated off the southern coast of China, at the mouth of the Canton river, between lat. 22° 9' and 22° 21' N. It consists of a rugged mountain ridge, running from east to west, broken into three or four peaks attaining an elevation of between 1700 and 1800 feet above the level of the sea, and intersected by deep narrow ravines. It is of very irregular outline, cut into deep inlets, especially on the south coast, where the hills occasionally slope down to a broad sandy beach, whilst several of the headlands terminate in perpendicular cliffs. Its greatest length is about eight miles, by a breadth of little more than four, and has an area of rather more than twenty-n inc square miles. It is separated from the opposite hilly, and in some places more elevated, mainland by a strait, variously called cap-syng-moon, or cum-sing-moon, ' which in its narrowest part (the lye-moon pass) is only half a mile in breadth, and, opposite to our newly acquired district of Kowloon, expands into a capacious harbour. CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants by Umberto Quattrocchi Pdf

"Following on the successes of two previous dictionary projects, the CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names and the CRC World Dictionary of the Grasses, Umberto Quattrocchi has undertaken this dictionary of economically important plants.... He has done for these plants what was so admirably done in his other works—brought the vast and scattered literature on plant names, and in this case, too, their uses, into coherent order so that the inquisitive scholar can get a foothold." —From the Foreword, Donald H. Pfister, Harvard University and Harvard University Herbaria, Cambridge, Massachusetts The CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, Synonyms, and Etymology provides the starting point for better access to data on plants used around the world in medicine, food, and cultural practices. The material found in the five volumes has been painstakingly gathered from papers of general interest, reports and records, taxonomic revisions, field studies, herbaria and herbarium collections, notes, monographs, pamphlets, botanical literature, and literature tout court. It includes sources available at various natural history libraries, floras and standard flora works, local floras and local histories, nomenclatural histories, and the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Much more than a dictionary, the book provides the names of thousands of genera and species of economically important plants, concise summaries of plant properties, and appropriate observations about medicinal uses. Drawing from a tremendous range of primary and secondary sources, it is an indispensable time-saving guide for all those involved with botany, herbal medicine, pharmacognosy, toxicology, medicinal and natural product chemistry, and agriculture.

Flora's Fieldworkers by Ann Shteir Pdf

When Catharine Parr Traill came to Upper Canada in 1832 as a settler from England, she brought along with her ties to British botanical culture. Nonetheless, when she arrived she encountered a new natural landscape and, like other women chronicled in this book, set out to advance the botanical knowledge of the time from the Canadian field. Flora’s Fieldworkers employs biography, botanical data, herbaria specimens, archival sources, letters, institutional records, book history, and abundant artwork to reconstruct the ways in which women studied and understood plants in the nineteenth century. It features figures ranging from elite women involved in imperial botanical projects in British North America to settler-colonial women in Ontario and Australia – most of whom were scarcely visible in the historical record – who were active in “plant work” as collectors, writers, artists, craft workers, teachers, and organizers. Understood as an appropriate pastime for genteel ladies, botany offered women pathways to scientific education, financial autonomy, and self-expression. The call for more diverse voices in the present must look to the past as well. Bringing botany to historians and historians to botany, Flora’s Fieldworkers gathers compelling material about women in colonial and imperial Canada and Australia to take a new look at how we came to know what we know about plants.
