Achieving Health for All by David Bishai,Meike Schleiff Pdf

How did seven low- and middle-income countries, inspired by the landmark Alma-Ata Declaration, dramatically improve citizen health by focusing on primary health care? The Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 marked a potential turning point in global health, signaling a commitment to primary health care that could have improved the safety of air, food, water, roads, homes, and workplaces in all 180 countries that signed it. Unfortunately, progress in many countries stalled in the 1980s. The declaration was, however, embraced by a number of countries, where its implementation led to substantial improvement in citizen health. Achieving Health for All reveals how, inspired by Alma-Ata, the governments of seven countries executed comprehensive primary health care systems, deploying new cadres of community-based health workers to bring relevant services to ordinary households. Drawing on a set of narrative case studies from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Nepal, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, the book explains how a primary health care focus succeeded in improving population health. The book also conclusively demonstrates that comprehensive, multisector, community-controlled, and population-level primary health care is a viable strategy that, against the odds, has led to sustainable, scalable good health at lower cost. Bringing together a group of experts to analyze the forty-year legacy of the Alma-Ata Declaration, Achieving Health for All is a fascinating look at the work needed to transform nations from places that make people sick to places where they stay healthy. An inspiring array of lessons learned along the way shows how readers can make policies that support the health of all people. Assisting Care Leavers Time for Action by OECD Pdf

Young adults who have lived in out-of-home care at some point during their childhood often struggle to build stable lives. This is not surprising: typically young care leavers not only have to overcome a difficult childhood, but also tend to receive less support during the crucial years of early adulthood than youth living with their parents.

Primary health care and HIV: convergent actions. Policy considerations for decision-makers by World Health Organization Pdf

The 2030 health-related Sustainable Development Goals call on countries to end AIDS as a public health threat and also to achieve universal health coverage. The World Health Organization (WHO) promotes primary health care (PHC) as the key mechanism for achieving universal health coverage, and the PHC approach is also essential for ending AIDS and reaching other Sustainable Development Goal targets. This publication helps decision-makers to consider and optimize the synergies between existing and future assets and investments intended for both PHC and disease-specific responses, including HIV.

The Heart of Care: Dignity in Action by Amanda Waring Pdf

I felt like a caged animal.' This damning indictment by Dame Dorothy Tutin of her treatment in hospital at the age of 70 propelled her daughter Amanda Waring into a crusade to ensure that all older people in care are treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. Amanda is now a widely respected filmmaker, public speaker and teacher specialising in dignified care of the elderly. The Heart of Care distils her experiences, covering such topics as : the transition from home or hospital to care home ; creating person-centred, compassionate care homes; coping with dementia ; creativity and activity in care ; honouring and celebrating our elders ; maintaining spiritual and emotional care The Heart of Care encourages all carers to look into themselves and question their attitudes, prejudices and behaviour. Combining anecdote, reminiscence, practical advice and role-model exercises that really work, Amanda Waring gently motivates and educates us all to be better carers. Acknowledging that the path can be hard, she includes tips and advice to keep carers engaged and motivated when the going gets tough. As our population rapidly ages and more and more people find themselves researching options for care of the elderly, and as lurid and disturbing stories about substandard care hit the headlines on a daily basis, we all need to look closely at these issues. Essential reading for all who care for an elderly person, whether stranger or loved one, The Heart of Care promotes respect for the dignity and intrinsic worth of others, regardless of age or disability.

VA Health Care: Actions Needed to Prevent Sexual Assaults and Other Safety Incidents by Randall B. Williamson Pdf

Changes in patient demographics present unique challenges for the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) in providing safe environments for all veterans treated in VA facilities. This report examined whether or not sexual assault incidents are fully reported and what factors may contribute to any observed underreporting, how facility staff determine sexual assault-related risks veterans may pose in residential and inpatient mental health settings, and precautions facilities take to prevent sexual assaults and other safety incidents. The report reviewed relevant laws, VA policies, and sexual assault incident documentation from Jan. 2007 through July 2010 provided by VA officials and the VA Office of the Inspector Gen. (OIG); reviewed portions of selected veterans' medical records at five judgmentally selected VA medical facilities chosen to ensure the residential and inpatient mental health units at the facilities varied in size and complexity; and spoke with the four Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISN) that oversee these VA medical facilities. Packed with practice examples, it includes chapters on early childhood education and care, as well as alternatives to school and higher education, covering everything from birth up to the age of 25. Knowledge Translation in Health Care by Sharon E. Straus,Jacqueline Tetroe,Ian D. Graham Pdf

Health care systems worldwide are faced with the challenge of improving the quality of care. Providing evidence from health research is necessary but not sufficient for the provision of optimal care and so knowledge translation (KT), the scientific study of methods for closing the knowledge-to-action gap and of the barriers and facilitators inherent in the process, is gaining significance. Knowledge Translation in Health Care explains how to use research findings to improve health care in real life, everyday situations. The authors define and describe knowledge translation, and outline strategies for successful knowledge translation in practice and policy making. The book is full of examples of how knowledge translation models work in closing the gap between evidence and action. Written by a team of authors closely involved in the development of knowledge translation this unique book aims to extend understanding and implementation worldwide. It is an introductory guide to an emerging hot topic in evidence-based care and essential for health policy makers, researchers, managers, clinicians and trainees.
