Introduction to Gauge Field Theories by M. Chaichian,N. F. Nelipa Pdf

In recent years, gauge fields have attracted much attention in elementary par ticle physics. The reason is that great progress has been achieved in solving a number of important problems of field theory and elementary particle physics by means of the quantum theory of gauge fields. This refers, in particular, to constructing unified gauge models and theory of strong interactions between the elementary particles. This book expounds the fundamentals of the quantum theory of gauge fields and its application for constructing unified gauge models and the theory of strong interactions. In writing the book, the authors' aim was three-fold: firstly, to outline the basic ideas underlying the unified gauge models and the theory of strong inter actions; secondly, to discuss the major unified gauge models, the theory of strong interactions and their experimental implications; and, thirdly, to acquaint the reader with a rather special mathematical approach (path-in tegral method) which has proved to be well suited for constructing the quantum theory of gauge fields. Gauge fields are a vigorously developing area. In this book, we have select ed for presentation the more or less traditional and commonly accepted mate rial. There also exist a number of different approaches which are presently being developed. The most important of them are touched upon in the Conclusion.

Quantization of Gauge Systems by Marc Henneaux,Claudio Teitelboim Pdf

This book is a systematic study of the classical and quantum theories of gauge systems. It starts with Dirac's analysis showing that gauge theories are constrained Hamiltonian systems. The classical foundations of BRST theory are then laid out with a review of the necessary concepts from homological algebra. Reducible gauge systems are discussed, and the relationship between BRST cohomology and gauge invariance is carefully explained. The authors then proceed to the canonical quantization of gauge systems, first without ghosts (reduced phase space quantization, Dirac method) and second in the BRST context (quantum BRST cohomology). The path integral is discussed next. The analysis covers indefinite metric systems, operator insertions, and Ward identities. The antifield formalism is also studied and its equivalence with canonical methods is derived. The examples of electromagnetism and abelian 2-form gauge fields are treated in detail. The book gives a general and unified treatment of the subject in a self-contained manner. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, and pedagogical examples are covered in the text.

Narrow Gauge in the Ypres Sector by Martin J B Farebrother,Joan S Farebrother Pdf

The Ypres sector of the Western Front was held predominantly by the British and Dominions Armies from 1914 to 1918. The Ypres Salient, at the centre of this sector, was one of the most intensively fought over single locations of the First World War. By the end of 1917 the sector was full of railways, dumps, camps, and other facilities. Much was lost in the German advance in April 1918, but from September 1918 the German Army was driven eastwards until the Armistice. Although Ypres and most of the forward areas are in Belgium, much of the support area is in northern France. In this book the meter gauge networks of both countries established before the First World War are examined, with their uses and extensions during the War. The build up of light (60cm gauge) railways from 1916 to 1918 is described, with an assessment of the contribution of both narrow gauges to the war effort. After the war the light railways in this sector were generally used only for short term clearing up and salvage. The meter gauge railways in Belgium were rebuilt or repaired. Those in France had been less affected. The story is followed to the closure of the last of these railways. This book is a companion volume to those on the Arras Sector (2015), and the Somme Sector (2018). It refers to other previous works on British, French and Belgian railways, especially during the First World War, but contains sufficient information to stand alone.

Calibration of Philips Ion Gauge by J. R. Tolmie Pdf

Previously issued Vac. Special Reports No. 18 and 19, dealing with the Philips type ion gauges, do not contain calibration curves of the gauges now in actual use, for no particular unit had been agreed upon as a standard at that time. This report accompanies a set of calibration curves of the standard gauge. The calibration data shown on the accompanying charts were obtained by employing an experimental layout as indicated in schematic drawing No. X-1147. Both of the Philips ion gauges were of the conventional type. These gauges are comprised of a 1-in. diameter ring type of anode, which is located coplanar with and midway between 2 2-1/2 in. square copper cathodes, which are separated by an interval of 1/2 in. The D.P.I. triode type of ionization gauge, which was employed during the tests, was in turn very carefully calibrated against a number of D.P.I. and Western Electric Company ionization gauges.

Yang-mills Theories In Algebraic Non-covariant Gauges by Bassetto Antonio,Nardelli G,Soldati R Pdf

This volume deals with canonical quantization, Feynman rules and renormalization of Yang-Mills theories in algebraic non-covariant gauges (typically axial and light-cone gauges). The material is self-contained and presented in a basic manner according to a personal style representative of a long lasting activity in the field. Emphasis is always placed on the underlying basic concepts of Quantum Field Theory, even when particular examples are treated, details and the related difficulties are thoroughly discussed. The value of the book goes beyond the specificity of its subject.
