Gerhard Richter, Sils by Gerhard Richter Pdf

Whenever Gerhard Richter goes to Sils, a small town in the Swiss Alps, he makes photographs, some of which he overpaints and adds to his "Atlas." Others he treats as autonomous works, as in those presented in this intimate artist's book. In the overpainted photographs, the levels of reality evident in photography are combined with those that exist in painting. However, the paired concepts prove redundant of both the realism in photographic representation and the abstraction in nonfigurative painting. The photographs reveal a parallel between both forms of painterly practice, evidence of the simultaneous existence of contradictory bodies of work in Richter's oeuvre.

Landscapes by Gerhard Richter Pdf

Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden) has always dealt with the landscape. No other motif has fascinated him as much or kept him so occupied over the years: black-and-white landscapes based on images from magazines and amateur photos; views of mountains and parks painted in thick impasto; softly hued, transparent, illusionist lake scenes. Ever since the subtle Corsica paintings of 1968/69, landscapes have become an established, distinct group of works within the artist's oeuvre. Richter captures reality in a painterly way, such that landscape and abstraction manifest not as opposites but as related concepts. Containing outstanding illustrations and insightful texts, this volume examines Richter's landscapes from the early sixties to the present. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2638-2)

Ways of Curating by Hans Ulrich Obrist Pdf

Drawing on his own experiences and inspirations - from staging his first exhibition in his tiny Zurich kitchen in 1986 to encounters and conversations with artists, exhibition makers and thinkers alive and dead - Hans Ulrich Obrist's Ways of Curating looks to inspire all those engaged in the creation of culture. Moving from meetings with the artists who have inspired him (including Gerhard Richter and Gilbert and George) to the creation of the first public museums in the 18th century, recounting the practice of inspirational figures such as Diaghilev and Walter Hopps, skipping between exhibitions (his own and others), continents and centuries, Ways of Curating argues that curation is far from a static practice. Driven by curiosity, at its best it allows us to create the future.

Gerhard Richter by Gerhard Richter Pdf

In 1988, Gerhard Richter created one of the most controversial and fascinating political painting-cycles of all time, with his Baader-Meinhof series. In 2002, he returned to the theme of media and political truth with his artist's book War Cut. For this project, Richter photographed 216 details of his abstract painting "No. 648-2" (1987), and, working on a long table over a period of several weeks, combined these 4 x 6-inch details with 165 texts on the Iraq war, published in the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper on the dates of the war's outbreak (March 20 and 21, 2003). "My method was to attach a number of texts to a number of images without having to think about whether something would be better positioned to the left or the right, above or below," Richter told an interviewer, for a New York Times feature on the publication. "I placed these images so that a connection develops in terms of colors, structures and other characteristics. . . . Some images match the cruelty and the madness described in the texts shockingly well. And others can even serve as illustrations when the texts speak of deserts and other landscapes." Originally published only in German in 2004, this long-awaited English version of this important artist's book presents Richter's powerful attempt to accommodate the extremity of war. For this edition, Richter applied the same process of text selection to The New York Times, using the same dates of the war's outbreak.

Atlas by Gerhard Richter Pdf

Born in Dresden in 1931, Gerhard Richter left the former GDR in 1961 to study in Düsseldorf, later living and working in Cologne. His practice has redefined the medium of painting, combining a rigorous conceptual approach with a sumptuous yet elusive beauty. His mastery of genres spans landscapes, portraiture, still life and abstraction. Lying at the heart of his practice is an ongoing project that commenced in 1964 and continues to this day. Atlas comprises over five thousand photographs, drawings, diagrams and proposals that are the foundation of Richter's oeuvre. Sometimes used as a source for his painting, Richter's album of pictures also demonstrates the complex dialogues he explores between painting and photography, history and memory, perception and representation. This book provides a critical tool for navigating Atlas, bringing together Richter's own writings alongside commentaries by an international range of curators, critics and art historians.

After Ethnos by Tobias Rees Pdf

For most of the twentieth century, anthropologists understood themselves as ethnographers. The art of anthropology was the fieldwork-based description of faraway others—of how social structures secretly organized the living-together of a given society, of how a people had endowed the world surrounding them with cultural meaning. While the poetics and politics of anthropology have changed dramatically over the course of a century, the basic equation of anthropology with ethnography—as well as the definition of the human as a social and cultural being—has remained so evident that the possibility of questioning it occurred to hardly anyone. In After Ethnos Tobias Rees endeavors to decouple anthropology from ethnography—and the human from society and culture—and explores the manifold possibilities of practicing a question-based rather than an answer-based anthropology that emanates from this decoupling. What emerges from Rees's provocations is a new understanding of anthropology as a philosophically and poetically inclined, fieldwork-based investigation of what it could mean to be human when the established concepts of the human on which anthropology has been built increasingly fail us.

Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) and Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME) by Sam Atallah Pdf

This book captures cornerstone developments in a new body of knowledge and provides an expert resource on a “hot topic” in rectal surgery. Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) was designed for local excision of select rectal neoplasms, however soon it became realized that the TAMIS technique could be used for applications beyond local excision, most notably for transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME). This new operative technique has revolutionized our approach to the distal rectum by allowing for improved access, especially in obese male patients with an android pelvis, and by minimizing abdominal wall access trauma. The endpoints of improved oncologic resection, as defined by mesorectal envelope completeness, negative circumferential resection margins, and negative distal margin, are assessed. This book details controversies, pitfalls, and future directions of taTME and TAMIS. Chapters are authored by those on the forefront of innovation with TAMIS and taTME, and each is considered an authority on the topic. Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) and Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME) is a must-have reference for surgeons who are performing this operation and fellows in training who want to completely understand the various nuances of TAMIS and taTME.

Gerhard Richter by Gerhard Richter,Armin Zweite,Anette Kruszynski Pdf

Over the past half-century, Gerhard Richter (born 1932) has built up a stylistically heterogeneous and conceptually complex body of painting, photography, sculpture and artist's books that firmly establishes his status as the most important living artist of our time: today, this diverse oeuvre totals in excess of 3,000 individual works. In February 2012, Hatje Cantz announced the first volume of their Gerhard Richter catalogue raisonne--the first of a projected five volumes, to be issued over the next seven years. Edited by Dietmar Elger, director of the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, who has spent years researching and preparing the publication, this third volume encompasses the works Richter assigned numbers 389-651/2, which span the years 1976 to 1988. Alongside nearly 700 full-color plates (many of them full-page), it includes full technical specifications, information about the artist's handwritten notes, and the provenance, bibliography and exhibition history for each individual work. This information is further supplemented by commentary, quotations from the artist and comparison images.
